Destiny 2 is (or will soon be?) free for the base game, lets you set up private matches easily and has really fun gunplay. I *think* you can play with however many people you like if you set up a private match

Sweet. Thanks, guys! If anything else come to mind, I'll keep stalking the thread. It's been a really long time but I used to play the original Modern Warfare in private matches and it was pretty easy to manage from in-game, from what I remember. It's also a game that scales down to smaller playercounts surprisingly well, it just turns the whole thing into a competitive stealth game.

We'd probably be good with that, but would I need to do postgrad work to set up a private game?

Edit: I just bought it and messed around with it. It looks super promising, so thanks for the tip. We'll try to test it out tonight. This might be perfect, at least until I can find the right Call of Duty - CoD4 would be great; that was some exceptional deathmatch, but I'm not confident in my ability to get myself and my guys into a private match together. Server hosting/internet smart stuff is a struggle for me.

I'm a lifelong console gamer who recently bought a PC that can actually run stuff. Looking for a few recommendations:

1. Solid single player FPS maybe with RPG elements to help me learn mouse/keyboard, like a Fallout or Bioshock type of thing?

2. I played Wasteland 2 and XCOM 2 on PS4 and liked both especially XCOM - what are some good games like this? I don't know genre names. Preferably on Steam.

3. Any good 2D, sprite style, turn based RPGs (like Final Fantasy 1 or 3/6) available on Steam?

4. I'm a little scared to ask but I'm kind of interested in an MMORPG. I used to play FFXI way back in the day. I'm intimidated by WOW since it has been out forever and I'm new to the genre so I feel like it wouldn't be noob-friendly.

The games I play right now most are Dead by Daylight, XCOM2, and Overwatch but I am finding the PVP stuff challenging in Overwatch since my mechanics for mkb are awful.

re 2: Invisible Inc, Battle Brothers, All Walls Must Fall, Into the Breach, Mutant Year Zero, Steamworld Heist, etc. If you have a tolerance for older games/bad UI, the original X-COM and X-COM Apocalypse are really good, as is Jagged Alliance 2. If you have a tolerance for anime, Disgaea, Phantom Brave.

3: Operation Abyss: New Toyko Legacy, Starcrawlers? Maybe? Lemme look up classic jrpgs on steam --- Trails in the Sky! You want Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky!

4: Kenshi. It's not an MMO but it feels like a bizarre cross between an old MMORPG, a city-builder and a survival rpg thing. It's really good!

e: Oh, and just to check - you've played Portal 1 + 2, right? They're like, perfect PC games.

2. Turn-based tactical games, you probably will like Battle Brothers, though it's a little different from XCOM2. There's a few XCOM clones that have been made in the past few years if you go hunting, but most are considered inferior to XCOM2. Honestly, there's so much you can mod in XCOM2 that if you wanted to play a game like it, you can probably find an overhaul mod that suits your fancy.

4. FFXIV is both good and beginner friendly. The goon presence in-game is exceptionally helpful if you have any problems, and the game is controller friendly if you wanted to go that route.

Possibly - I did start a public server by accident and get attacked by an alien for a very brief period while I was trying to sort out how it all worked. I was a marine, and I think he killed me a lot more than I killed him.

Edit: also it worked quite well; we were all able to play together, and while the game isn't perfect for our needs, it's still a nice alternative to Murder Miners and CSGO while we continue the quest for a good cozy DM.

Axiom verge's style and atmosphere are extremely good and it's got some real great surprises tucked away in its story both in terms of where the plot goes and also visually, too. The music is also great, and the whole package was all done by a single dude. The upgrades can get really crazy and there's dozens of weapons to find. It's a real good time.

Gonna throw on one more XCOM like and suggest Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus. It does some neat things with the action system. Everyone gets a move and a fire action or two move actions as standard, but you get bonus actions based on certain abilities / collecting “research data” from fallen enemies and the environment.

So it adds another layer of strategy where you’re trying to optimize getting as many bonus moves as possible so that you can run your guys halfway across the map in 1 turn or fire your fuckoff huge cannon at max charge.

Early versions were reviewed as too easy because the bonus moves made you so OP, but I think they’ve balanced it out better now.

And the game just oozes style—very well done art and soundtrack with surprisingly funny characters for what is supposed to be a grimdark setting.
