Japan's rarely a good direction to look for messaging about bullying. This is the place where collectivism lets them say "the bully is right, stop being so different" with a straight face.

Every once in a while I think about Necromancers singing Linkin Park and it makes me smile.

I think you gravely underestimate just how impressive gradients and fancy digital lighting effects seemed in the early 2000s. Seriously, it's all aged badly, but back in the day even the most mediocre of artists could shine if they threw in some gradients and fancy digital effects, because the new technology was amazing at the time. It was all over professional comics too.

To this day I still miss Life of Riley and my 2005 self would have loved to how the gently caress that story was going to end because after 5 years of wheel spinning it finally started working towards an endgame and then dropped dead in the middle of an exposition dump.

Life of Riley was the one with a combined arms paintball fight against the devil right? It kinda amazing how many early webcomics started as gag-a-days and lead into serious storylines about fighting demons.

Back then webcomics ended one of two ways: fizzling out only to vanish when someone forgot to renew a domain, or updates slowing to a crawl until the artist finally puts out a hastily written 800 word conclusion describing what the last strips would have involved had they felt like drawing them, just so people will stop asking them about it. For a long time I was still expecting Dresden Codak to go out that way.

EN was succeeded by Errant Story, which was a plotted fantasy comic that ran for a decade and which I literally only just now remember that I read all of. It ended in 2012 (with an epilogue!) and was succeeded by Does Not Play Well With Others, which apparently still updates semi-regularly but which I don't read. Weirdly, Poe seems to be one of the only old-guard webcomic "artist" types who didn't fall into the porn thing, which I would not have predicted at all.
