It's weird how in the pre and post battle cutscenes he has subtitles depicting him as a nearly mindless hulk. But in battle he's perfectly cogent, if manic.

The entirety of Grynewaht's characterization is that he's a big stupid idiot who has decided the Warrior of Light is his arch nemesis while being completely unaware of who he's loving with. The only thing I could see as remotely queer coded is the blush on his face which...is a reach? Especially when if you wanna talk about queer coded villains in this game Zenos is right there and not particularly subtle at all.

Blockhouse posted:I legitimately don't see the gay thing? Did I miss something? If you play with Japanese audio he's incredibly gay coded and it was really gross. I have no idea what he sounds like in English so they probably dropped that part of his character. Edit: gross as in let's make him a gay villain for laughs, not that he is gay, just to clarify.

In the English version (which you should be listening to get over the non glorious nippon language you weeb) he is a larger then life bro whose namedays have all come at once upon meeting you. Also use a word other then "gross" it sounds like I'm on the playground in preschool and the girls are calling the boys gross cause the boys are eating bugs.

I know because they were so rushed making ARR the english localization team ended up making Haurchefant way different than the Japanese version and the Japanese branch had no time to review it, and there were complaints from the Japanese players that Haurchefant was way too horny for you. It's why they had to course correct in HW with his character.

FactsAreUseless posted:But what are the mannerisms? What is the coding? I don't speak Japanese and I listen to the Japanese audio specifically because I can't pick up those details so I don't know if the voice acting is good or bad. This makes it sound like Grynwalt was an okama in Japanese or something. In English it just comes off like he finds Yotsuyu intimidating and offputting which, you know, seems like a pretty sensible reaction to Yotsuyu.

I'm curious as well because I've always heard about the Haurchefant thing but only really broadly without any real examples. I'd be very very curious for more info about the Grynewaht thing too because that's definitely not implied in his English localization. I imagine it's preferable than, say, the localization process of a game like Persona 5, which kept and leaned into outdated affectations to flag and mock its queer characters, especially if their queerness is being travestied, but it does seem like a strange thing to just do away with entirely. Incidentally, after Elmi clarified I think it's totally clear that they meant "it is gross to treat gay men as comedy stereotypes" rather than "gay men are gross," but I do think the initial post was phrased in sort of an eye-popping way.

For whatever reason I'm finding it very hard to find videos of him in Japanese on YouTube. I guess I could check out some cutscenes from the cutscene furnishing but IIRC a lot of his characterization is from solo instances.

Kerrzhe posted:i suspect that it would be hard to directly describe those things to a non-speaker, like trying to describe colors to a blind person. I mean, this is a very broad thing. You can have an antagonist who is queer coded without that aspect of their character being used in any problematic way, or you could have a campy lisping villain who exemplifies all kinds of lovely stereotypes and cliches, or God only knows how many variations between. I don't think it's some kind of hard ask to enumerate what about his character is queer-coded and the implication of those things, if only so we can know what to be mad about.

Japanese stuff does then to use extremely loud/boisterous hand-in-hand with stereotypes but it tends to include more than just that. I don't see anything even in the Japanese version that suggests anything in that vein though I'm fully willing to be corrected.
