if you live in Queens, please vote for Caban tomorrow. the impression i get is that it's going to be really close and probably a three-way race, and she's the best candidate by a mile. of the other two frontrunners, Lasak is the law-and-order kind of DA while Katz is a machine hack who's spent over two decades constantly looking for the next opportunity to advance her career also, there are judicial elections in Brooklyn. there's less information out there for that, but the New Kings Democrats did interviews with candidates, so that's probably your best source of info if you live in City Council District 45 (Jumaane Williams's old seat), there's a primary election to permanently replace him. yes, there was a special election for that seat already, and yes, it was over a month ago. but that's how elections work in this city. it's a rematch between Farah Louis, the winner of the last election and the choice of the party machine, and Monique Chandler Waterman, the runner-up and choice of progressives like Jumaane, Zellnor Myrie, and Bobby Carroll. ordinarily the choice would be clear, but MCW made some remarks about "Trump voters" getting Louis over the finish line in the special election. given that many Trump voters in the district are orthodox jews in Midwood, there's speculation that these are coded remarks. it's been a lot of poo poo flinging over the past couple of weeks. i don't care who you vote for, frankly. neither of them are impressive as candidates get that OUT of my face has issued a correction as of 18:10 on Jun 24, 2019 |

oh, almost forgot: the Rep Your Block campaign is about to start up again. that's the campaign by NKD and other groups to get more people on the Brooklyn Democratic county committee. NKD held their most recent general meeting about it. we're not there yet in terms of us vs. the machine, but it feels like we're getting close. you can sign up here. if you live in Queens and the Bronx, they're doing the same thing there, but i don't know of a site that you can sign up for email updates. they're not quite as far in the game

Gibbons is the party’s pick and Maldonado-Cruz is def the challenger. It’s civil court so it’s basically small claims court and poo poo, it’s never a contested primary. here’s an interview with the two candidates. I don’t like that Maldonado-Cruz doesn’t have bar approval I guess but eh. Whatever.

So I don't know how many people will know/care about this, but Bob Freeman was fired yesterday for being a sex pest. He was the head of the committee on open government within the NY dept of state, which he was a part of since it was created in 1976. Pretty wild, he was The guy when it came to questions about NY's freedom of information law/open meetings/personal privacy law.

I really don't like whining about ~cancel culture~ but I really, really hate "sex pest." Imo it's used to minimize and cover up awful poo poo. A pest is a mildly annoying younger sibling, not a serial predator. Schenectady mayoral race is too close to count, with 65 votes between the incumbent (Gary Mccarthy) and the challenger (Thearse Mccalmon) and over 200 absentee's to count. Current mayor also may have stole the WFP line by having his team tell people that he was the endorsed candidate and to write him in, despite the fact that it was Mccalmon who got the endorsement. the machine is weak, and getting weaker everyday.
