God I'm thinking about how dumb it is that Shido is introduced after the first palace and Joker can't remember who he is, and then the game has the audacity to tell you "hey, that guy seems familiar, like you've heard his voice and seen his face before, who could he be?????" like we don't know only one thing about Joker and it's that some dude ruined his life, who else could it POSSIBLY be

My favorite part is that the games forces you to silently stand there like a tool while Shido's goons shove Ryuji, unless you're on NG+ or had the precognition to grind up your GUTS early.

Just because there's a (and this is a stretch) plausible explanation, it's still not a fun or enjoyable aspect of storytelling for the player to have to say "what do you mean you can't tell who it is?"

I can accept Joker not remembering Shido as a storytelling device, it’s dumb but it’s also a character moment. Joker struggles to remember stuff after taking so many knocks to the head in a Palace.

Right. I, like apparently most other people, completely forgot about Strega. Still, I think that a trained group of enforcers loyal to a charismatic leader would do much better than some sickly people with no real goals or meaning to speak of.

Or make it that there's like...some sort of ritual you could perform, it could be obscure so you wouldn't ever do it on accident, but still, anyone could do it. It could either be a physical ritual, where you have to gather four people and do a chant, or it could be some weird technological thing like calling your own cell phone number.

I'd say "a teenage lawyer is too unbelievable even for Japan" but that franchise is still very guilty of that, just not with its protagonists.

Having the main characters in P6 be adults would be the single best thing they could do to revitalize the franchise.

That doesn’t mean they all have to be old, though. 18-19 is well within the typical age range for a jrpg protagonist, and many games have at least one or two party members that are a lot older. Even replacing the high school setting with a college would shake up the structure of the game and give the player more freedom in deciding what to do each day.

And it makes sense from a story perspective, too. Persona is supposed to be about characters dealing with their personal problems and becoming stronger, but being limited to high-schoolers also limits the kinds of problems you can discuss and the stories you can tell. That age when you’re moving on from childhood and trying to find your feet in the adult world is a time of great change and great anxiety, and there’s lots of material there that a Persona game could explore.

The next game should be about a group of elderly former persona users who have to regain their persona wielding abilities to face some new threat one last time while their memories deteriorate and you have to play through their former adventures for them to remember how to use their abilities.

Fake edit: I wrote that as a joke but I now realize that sounds kinda tight, honestly.

I think the zeitgeist on this is changing. FF12 was like 15 years ago and both 13 and 15 feature older protagonists. There's also been a ton of really popular series branching out into older protagonists like Yakuza (where your character is a grandfather). Also we have a lot more things like Nioh and Sekiro with their 30-something leads.

I think Vaan and Penelo were actually always a part of the game, it was just the decision to make him the starting/PoV character came fairly late. Which was probably a better idea than having these rando kids get forced into your party later on.

Fair late in the pre-planning stage. The change happened before any real development started.

I posted, a while back, that an office would be the perfect place for Persona. Internet is the other world. Water cooler and lunch breaks provide midday s-link conversation. Keeping your job by doing work and sleeping versus grinding in the internet world/going out at night provides the life/combat balance. Persona 5 kinda took on hitting high-ranking people, but management is your hook here. It's an easy fit.

But it's Japan so it'll be teenagers saving the world forever.

There's the cultural idea that high school is the last time of freedom, in Japanese media, before entering the workforce grinds you down to a husk. Admittedly....that's not too far off from reality.

So yeah, teenagers saving the world isn't going away.

Yeah, isn't college way less intense compared to high school in Japan? Let's not even talk about their corporate culture.

Yeah, college is a thing where there are ~3~ schools in the country everyone wants to go to and they're hellishly difficult to get into. Once you are in though you just coast and are basically guaranteed a degree.

Basically. The idea comes down to "student = freedom", "workforce = Soul crushing despair, you're doomed just give up". Japanese schools are pretty bonkers, with clubs, cram schools, entrance tests for what we would consider high school ( sophomore-senior grades are not compulsory in Japan), but there's still this overarching idea that being a student, either high school or college, is the last period of true freedom in someone's life.

If their only goal is making money with as little effort as possible, no, they can just continue to go with what worked in the past. This is probably what they’re going to do, unfortunately.

I’m talking more about revitalizing it from a creative standpoint. Taking a risk on something a little different, like when they added the life sim elements to P3 in the first place when it was such a departure from the previous games. That doesn’t mean the series has to completely revamp itself or that another high school game can’t be good, just that I think we're seeing diminishing returns on the formula.

Teenagers are good protagonists for this sort of thing because the primary demographic consists of teenagers, who are like "yeah I know that teenage thing, as a teenager" or young adults who can relate to it, having also been teenagers before.
