AITA For Swearing At My Big Brother For His Perverted Jokes

quote:

My brother who is six years older than me has always had a weird sense of humor. He's been making perverted jokes towards me since I was around seven or eight. I would be playing video games and everyday he would just walk up to me and say "What are doing? Are you watching porn?" And I would respond "I don't know what porn is, stop bothering me." And that would be it. But I started thinking it was weird when I was around 10 and I began going through puberty, and I learned what porn is. But I still responded with "I don't know what porn is." A few months before my 11th birthday his jokes got weirder and more intense. He asked if I liked anal or tentacle hentai, and whenever I was drawing by myself and he saw me he would come up and ask if he could draw with me then he just drew cocks and pussies. This made me so uncomfy so I just continued to act like I was clueless. When I was thirteen I thought he was going to stop since it wouldn't be as funny because I was too old to not know what a penis was. He didn't seem to be slowed down though, he still made dick jokes whenever I ate bananas and asked if I wanted to be a prostitute when I grow up. I knew I couldn't play stupid anymore so I just became silent and averted eye contact and waited for him to leave the room, it was so awkward. I'm currently 14 and my brother is 21 and six days ago he asked if I had ever put a condom on a dude, and I just snapped I yelled "Can you just gently caress off for once? This bullshit just isn't funny anymore!" This was the first time he heard me swear, and he looked mad, he said "Do not speak to me like that!" I responded "Your jokes are loving awful, dude, I don't want to hear another one!" I then proceeded to run to my room and lock the door.

I didn't think my reaction was that bad at first, but it saddened my brother very much. He stopped speaking to me, he's not eating, he's in trouble at work because he's showed up late on two days since the argument. My parents seem mad at me for doing this to my brother, but they haven't confronted me directly, just being kinda passive aggressive. When he first started making weird jokes my parents would just tell him to stop, all he did was laugh at them when they said that. They stopped trying to stop him when I was 9, it just became normal.

Looking back at it I think I should have just told him years ago that he made me uncomfortable, instead of waiting so long and just swearing at him. I don't know what I can do to get him out of this bad state. My parents have tried to get him out of his room some more, and he just refuses.

Him behaving this way makes me feel even worse for yelling at him. But I'm unsure if I was really in the wrong for what happened. I can understand making the jokes when I was around seven and eight, I guess it could be amusing. But it was weird to continue for so long, especially after I began puberty. I don't know it's just so bizzare. AITA?

Surprise, your big brother is an incest pedo!

My [21M] Dad [54M] is very macho and closed-minded. Is it normal for men to be like this?

quote:

I'm studying to be a nurse, and my father is very unsupportive of it. He thinks being a nurse is a woman's job and he doesn't understand why a guy would want to be a nurse. There are many male nurses. It is not woman's work. When I told him I wanted to be a nurse he was like, "YOU WANT TO BE A NURSE?! ARE YOU GAY?" I thought that was a very ignorant thing to say.

In high school when I got a job as a cashier working in a retail store, my dad was like "I always looked at being a cashier as a woman's job." I told him, "There are a ton of male cashiers." He was like, "Yeah all the lame guys."

Most of my friends are girls. My father is also bothered by that. He asks me "Why do you always hang out with girls? You never want to be around men." I have guy friends, but I also have a lot of female friends. I don't think sexes need to be confined to their own sex. I've never been a "guy's guy" and my father was always baffled about that.

Lastly, I keep all my change in a plastic bag. My father said, "You keep change in a plastic bag? That is what women do. You want me to buy you a purse so you can keep all your change in it?" Since when is keeping change in a plastic bag for women?

I've asked him, "Why do you think like this?" He says, "I come from a different era." I don't really think that's a valid excuse because my dad is not that old. He grew up in the 70's and 80's. Even if you grew up in a different time, you ought to be aware that line of thinking has no place in our society in 2019.

My dad is being sexist, homophobic, and macho. Is it normal for men around his age to think like this? He was born in 1965.

tl;dr: My dad is very closed-minded and macho. He has very narrow views of masculinity. Is it normal for men around his age to think like this?

WIBTA if I told my parents that I won't take care of them when they get older?

quote:

Long time visitor, first time poster, yadda yadda yadda.

English is not my first language, sorry about any mistakes.

I'll try to keep the story as short as possible.

I never lied to my parents about who I am or anything like that, and when I discovered that I'm gay I wouldn't be hiding that from my parents either, I couldn't stand the idea of living a double life and lying to them.

Ever since I came out as gay when I was 19 (I'm 25 now, male), my relationship with my parents has changed a lot, after that, everything wrong with me was because I was gay: "He's lazy because he's gay" "He don't want to find a job because he's gay" "He has those psychological problems because he's gay", it got worse to the point that they they kicked me out.

I had to live with a friend for about 5 years, and even with that, i still visited them every weekend and never asked for money, I did it because I wanted to see them, and they visited me about twice in those 5 years. Since then, I got a scholarship (and started college), got a job and everything got better. I take them to trips, nice restaurants and stuff, help with bills and emergencies(even though I don't live with them anymore), I pretty much do everything I can to be a good son and keep a good relationship with them, even though I'm still hurt (even over 4 years later).

Sometimes when we are together they say stuff like "I hope when i'm old and you're taking care of us, you (proceed to say something I have to learn how to do or something like that)", but in reality, I don't want to take care of them, and I don't feel like I should.
I can help them with money, I can visit, I can pay for medicine(if necessary) but I would never want to live with them ever again.

I would never take care of someone who wasn't there for me when I needed the most.

WIBTA if I told them that? I really don't want to go into a deep conversation with them about what I typed here because "I can forgive but I won't forget".
I'm planning on just saying "Look, I'm not going to take care of you guys, I might even pay someone to do it if you guys need, but I won't do it myself".

What do you guys think?

Tell them that you're too gay to take care of them; they'll understand

When I was in elementary school we had different rules for being straight or gay. Wearing your watch on your right hand, having an earring on your right ear, carrying bags of coins in a plastic sack rather than burlap bag stapled to your nuts so it jingles when you walk, and so on, all made you gay. I see this dude's dad grew up in the same kind of place. I can understand his confusion.

AITA for secretly seeing a psychic medium in order to communicate with my ex who died?

quote:

Attn sloppy journalists, don’t poach my words.

Last year my ex of 12 years died decades too young. I’m happily married with kids but took my time to grieve and my spouse was very supportive during this time. Since then I don’t bring ex up even though I think of ex often and deal with my sadness internally.

My neighbor who also lost a close friend, told me the other day that she had an experience visiting a psychic medium and was able to speak to her friend. She gave several examples of proof that it was not a scam. It’s hard for me to really know. Neighbor seems to have her head on straight. I neither believe nor disbelieve her story. It’s so hard to know what the truth is.

I reached out to the psychic, who takes appts 6 months in advance and charges a few hundred dollars. My spouse and I have joint finances but also have cash that we earn and can spend as we wish. I made an appt and will pay in cash.

I feel my spouse would disapprove because I grieved long enough and I should have moved on by now. But I also have unfinished business and lingering things I want to say to my ex if I knew they could really hear me. I’m not in love with ex, I don’t have lingering romantic feelings. Part of my sadness lies in the fact that I feel badly for having moved on and cut them out of my life. There are just things I want to communicate and apologize for and things I want to know. My goal is to put this behind me once I’m done.

AITA for secretly seeing a psychic medium behind my spouse’s back in order to communicate with my ex who died?

ETA: thanks everyone. I thought I had my mind made up about what I was going to do but the act of making the post and checking on it a couple of times gave this issue way too much headspace on my weekend with my family. I hate that it did that. If I have something I need to say to the ex, I have to believe that it can be heard right from where I am. I want to move forward. Doesn’t mean I won’t be sad when I think about ex, but I need to work through the grieving in a productive way, and not have to hide something from partner in the process.

AITA 21M FOR BEING NICE TO THE CASHIER?

quote:

Hi reddit! First time poster, loooooooong time lurker, been lurking this sub here for quite sometime and decided i would post something that's been happening very frequently.

Right now im a relationship thats been all roses and flowers and well its all been good, but recently my GF (F22) and I went to eat to Burger King and well, while i was ordering to the cashier that was (or is?) a woman i said: "Gracias mi amor" that for those who don't know spanish is "THANK YOU MY LOVE" I know it sounds very r/niceguys in english but here in my country it's something thats very normal and like its day to day stuff, and my GF after i said that she went super silent and ate all quiet and stuff. Well when we get to the car she goes like "Si le vas a decir mi amor a todas las cueros por ahi, me avisas que no vuelvo" Which translate to "If you're gonna keep saying love to all the whores around, tell me so I don't go home" and i just looked at her and said that it was no big deal that it's something normal. And she went ballistic saying more stuff about "my hoes" and all that typical stuff.

quote:

I'm a college student that lives in a house with 3 other guys. I came home one day and one of my roommates and his girlfriend were freaking out saying the house was haunted because the cat was staring at the ceiling and they felt strange breezes around them. My roommate's girlfriend sent a picture of the living room to her mom (who happens to be a professional psychic medium) and the mom responded saying she saw evil spirits in the room and that it needed cleansing So now the psychic mother is coming over on Friday to burn sage in all the rooms and bless the house. I told my roommates I don't want a random woman I've never met going into my room burning sage and making smoke for something I don't believe in and think is incredibly stupid and deceitful (though I don't really care if she "blesses" the rest of the house). My roommates say I should let her in my room because "it's not hurting anybody". AITA for refusing to let her in my room?

This would be fairly normal for Costa Rica. The cashiers say that kind of stuff to you all the time, anyways. I've never spoken back to them in the same way, or really even thought about it, but I just asked my wife (who is half Nicaraguan and lived in CR for nearly 20 years) and she said it would be normal to say "gracias mi amor" to a cashier.

Edit: Further chat with my wife on this one, basically the same thing happened to her when she moved here. She didn't realize it was normal and asked her then boyfriend to stop talking to people that way, and he did. She later realized it was nothing. So I suppose it depends slightly on whether the GF is native as well, and the BF should probably just stop anyways if it makes her uncomfortable. But her wigging out about "whores" is a huge overreaction.
