Alright cool, thanks the input!

I can already tell how this is going to go for me. I generally enjoy getting solid gear, so that I won't be held back by "weak links". I just never thought I was going to be in a situation where I have to stick to headphone listening so often.

As always, you get what you pay for, and since the HD600s are so tried and tested, and can be found on sale... I'll wait for those. Monoprice will just have to do until then. Getting the 599s puts me too close to "might as well just go one step higher" territory. haha

Yeah when I have some extra cash I’m like “do I want 6xx or a new knife? Ehhh 598 is good enough, buy more knives”

Yeah, 598 full price is pretty drat close to 600 sale prices here (EU), so I'll probably just do it since as always, once I have legit audio poo poo, I spend the rest of my cash on knives tattoos and records. :)

they're similar tonally, but the elegia is more mid forward and the elex is more neutral and balanced. elex really is just a better sounding hd650 tonally, so if you like that, and the smoothness of the treble it's an amazing can in and of itself..

also, price drop!

I don't think anyone here is going to be able to answer that directly.

For what it's worth I really like my ZMF Vibro Mk IIs. Never heard the Argons. If they're in any way comparable as far as T50 mods go then it's probably a good idea.

Or you can put the difference towards a fancier & more expensive upgrade. Your call.

Any recommendations for something solid in the 50-100 price range for over-ear headphones for commuting on a train? I don’t want to go much above $50 as I would bake it the freedom to throw it in my backpack and not worry about ruining an expensive pair. Noise canceling a plus but not necessary, wireless a plus but not necessary.

The Cowin E7 has good reviews at $60 but I always try to ask the experts here before buying much of anything.

I just got the Etymotic ER2XR and they are good and proper iEMs. Mids are glorious. Bass is a lot more than I expected and good. Treble pretty detailed and yet not too much.

They sound a lot like Sonys 800ST with a bit more high end extension.

Budget - $300 CAD
Source - Pixel 2, maybe computer use (non-dedicated sound card) but not likely.
Isolation Requirements - Transit. Includes bus and rail lines, lots of people and squeaking and general loud noises. Moderate to high, I guess?
Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM or over-ear, either okay!
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced, probably earnestly tipped a little to a bit of bass.
Past Headphones - Sennheiser CX... 2XX? 3XX? I've lost the packaging a while ago. They're servicable, bought off the cuff. Fit the ears comfortably. I use Bose AE2 at home, though I find the bass a little underwhelming in comparison. I like the fit of the latter despite my big head. Otherwise few complaints.
Preferred Music - Jazz, funk, folk, synth-pop, some post-punk stuff. Emphasis on the former four, though.

Wireless, if possible. The lack of an audio jack is just killing it to me and despite only having a few months I've gone through an auxiliary cable and I want to avoid needing a continual chain of replacements.

Full-size is also fine, though IEM preferred. I will accept bein a dork and I generally have a bag with me to stow stuff away anyway so full-size isn't a killer.

Thanks!

This does everything you want but is outside your price range:
(you'll want to swap to the Canadian equivalent of the URL probably)

https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/truly-wireless/wf-1000xm3 ?

So let's get practical instead and stick to a wired & cost effective solution:

https://www.linsoul.com/product-page/tinhifi-t3-IEM

I have a T3. Use the wide-bore (black) tips instead of the red/grey ones for enhanced bass delivery. What you won't see on any/many photos is the supplied stock cable is fantastic and the whole package looks a lot fancier than what it costs.

The price is a little bit flexible and mostly me trying to limit budget more than I can't afford it. No Canadian pricing available as far as I can find but 230USD is 300CAD anyway so nbd.

My complaint with wires isn't actually to do with the ones attached to my IEMs, though I've never had one with a great lifespan (usually a year, tops). It's with the actual USB-C to 3.5mm jack dying. Though at 90CAD I'd have to go through a lot of cables to match it.

I'll keep an eye on the Sonys as they come into market, but will earnestly probably go for the T3s in the short-term. Thanks for the info & quick reply!

You can get a Bluetooth MMCX cable for the T3. Look for something that supports APT-X.

If you want something really isolating, you could look at an Etymotic ER2XR or ER3XR. They're pretty much the best isolating universal IEMs on the market in you price range, but require super deep insertion. They can also be used with a Bluetooth MMCX cable.

In today's ear pad swapping adventures:

https://xtrfy.com/accessories/spare-parts/earpads-pu-leather/

"lol spare parts for lovely video game headsets"

Yeah. $15 USD ear pads with memory foam. They don't half bring out the bass though. I put a pair on my ATH-MSR7b (have to stretch them over the cups rather than the mounting rings - all good though, secure fit once you do that) and it's a solid upgrade.

Redline by Laserhawk is back to making me feel slightly sick due to the sub bass vibrations in my upper jaw during the opening - how I like it. That's after turning my amp down too. No apparent loss of mid-range or high end but I don't have a measurement rig so maybe I'm full of poo poo. YMMV.

Edit - it occurred to me a while later why I should explain why I think this is a thing rather than yet another Brainwavz reference. The ear opening is slightly smaller than HM5 pads so there isn't as much displacement required for good bass impact. Firmer grade of memory foam too - they still compress & shape but not as easily. I think the term would be high viscosity.

The battery capacity of my QC35 appears to be more or less ruined after leaving it sitting around at low state of charge for a while. I'm going to charge them from zero with a USB multimeter to see whats up.
Has anybody managed to replace the battery in one of these or is it too risky? I don't want to have a third party lithium pack explode next to my ear.

I have no definite idea but I doubt it's designed to be user serviceable and I'm glad you're taking the exploding battery thing seriously. Those things really pop when they go off.

I'd recommend contacting Bose customer service and asking what a battery replacement service charge might be (if out of warranty).

There's a video on youtube. It looks like it's possible but you have to both melt glue and solder/desolder the battery wires. The battery costs $35+ and is only available used

Samsung Galaxy true wireless buds were like $110 at Costco and work pretty well for this non-audiophile. Nice fit, decent sound (tho not necessarily super duper bassy), work pretty seamlessly with my iPhone 6s. Charging case is small and works well, and the price is pretty decent compared to beats X or the true wireless beats. I see reviews complaining about muffled phone sound, but it works fine for me.

Sennheiser HD 58X from drop is your best bet really if you want something that’s strictly quality at that price point. Beyerdynamic DT770 studio is a good alternative if you need closed back. beyond that it’s a fairly thin field.

wireless can be good, but the good options are well beyond your budget.

I just got my HD 6XX and JDS Labs Atom combo and it sounds fantastic. My MacBook Pro can drive the headphones without the amp, but I definitely hear the difference in the low end with the amp on

Just to make sure, the correct way to run this setup is to put the source (MBP in this case) volume at 100% and then control the volume on the amp, right?
