"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

it hasn't come up yet in this thread but the new Mark Ronson album is great as hell. It reminds me of that Calvin Harris album from a couple years back where it's got a wide variety of guest voices (this one has Miley, Camila Cabello, Angel Olson, Lykki Li, King Princess, Alicia Keys, and a really cool triptych featuring someone named YEBBA) and totally nails a particular mood. That Calvin Harris album was the perfect Summer Party album, and this is the perfect Moody Summer Nights album. Lots of disco and roller rink vibes. Obviously Nothing Breaks Like a Heart is dope, but the real highlight is the Angel Olsen collaboration, it's such a vibe.

Carly, not even to be coy or anything. But all I hear from Ariana live online is that it isn't a very creative show, and the odds of Ariana touring close to you in the future are likely higher than Carly.

I saw Ariana and I agree to go to Carly. Dangerous Woman seemed a much better show to me. Sweetener was fine and all and if you're into Ariana, it's a pretty fun time but you're probably gonna get more out of Carly. It's almost certainly a cheaper show too.

The one disadvantage to skipping Ariana is you won't be able to get a dick stain sweatshirt.

Yeah I'm not a fan of power up or rbb, but some of the b-sides on rbb are really nice (sassy me). Red Velvet currently feels pretty experimental, sappy wasn't really straightforward as well (but still not as radical this). Maybe it's just a new kpop trend, Black Pink's recent stuff also has this weird hybrid/patchwork feel.

This to me feels like SM going back to the I got a Boy well from 2013. IGAB was super famous and popular because of its hybrid/multiple song feel but in that case I thought it had much stronger song writing and everything kinda did flow. This RV song just doesn’t work for me personally.

I hate to interrupt you defending a bottom 50% CRJ song (which, like all CRJ songs, is still very good because she is amazing) but holy gently caress y'all It Is Going Down In Pop Music World

So, Taylor Swift, the center of the pop universe for the last decade, posted on tumblr today:

https://twitter.com/Katie_Krause/status/1145404483511259136

tl;dr: Scooter Braun purchased her catalog from her old label and now owns the masters for her earlier work. Taylor Swift does not like Scooter Braun. Taylor Swift is now doing what Taylor Swift does best, wreak vengeance on her foes.

The Scooter Braun stuff is... interesting, because i'm pretty sure everyone in the world was under the assumption that she just said something that she later regretted to Kim and Kanye and they just happened to have receipts, so i dunno about all of the "elaborate planning" stuff when it comes to that, but honestly the Famous video is problematic at best and at worst wicked gross, and you don't have to give me a whole lot of evidence that some BTS dude in the record industry is shady and gross because that's the music industry to a T. This also very much plays into the image of Taylor Swift, Manipulated Musician, which she also dipped into when she came out and talked about how streaming music affected artists specifically with regards to Spotify, although that seems like a battle she largely lost because she's been on all those services for years now.

It gets more interesting because first to the defense of Mr. Braun was his bestest buddy, Justin Bieber! Justin basically tried to mediate for his friend, who he claims is a really good dude who is only looking out for Taylor Swift's best interests and generally playing the "moral third party" card which is sort of laughable coming from someone whose personality type is best described as "miscreant" (even though he's totally into jesus now guys). Hailey Bieber (neè Baldwin) then called her husband a "gentleman" on Twitter for showing a basic level of human decency by apologizing for being an rear end in a top hat for the last half-decade. Braun's wife also posted to Instagram calling Swift's post out, saying that Scooter has been supportive of her in private and public, has no control over his clients, and that Swift is clearly mischaracterizing the Kim-cident to make herself look like more of a victim (which, fair). There was also a piece put out by People Magazine that was clearly leaked out by the Braun camp that claims that Swift knew of this deal days in advance

Of course, on the other side of the coin, pretty much every female pop star any of us even mildly like) is speaking out in support of Swift (and also Iggy Azalea, who pointed out that the aforementioned People article was bullshit because it doesn't imply that she had any way to stop it and that "days" is not a long time in Record Company Dealmaking Time, which can take months to get all the details hammered out). Halsey tweeted a message of support, Miley Cyrus has publicly unfollowed Braun on instagram, apparently Swift liked a post that basically confirmed that Bieber cheated on Selena Gomez (which, duh), Cara Delevingne called out the Biebers for being awful people, Sky Ferreira posted on Instagram about how contracts that she signed at age 15 are still biting her in the rear end, Todrick Hall has claimed that Braun is homophobic and evil and also has said negative things about Swift in the past; poo poo is wild on Instagram, and it will only get wilder. Many of the women supporting Swift mention the challenge of being in an industry still largely ruled by men who take claim of the work that is produced under their watch at the expense of the artists who actually create it, and while the Braun/Swift personal stuff is interesting, the larger point that Swift makes is about who should own the rights to a work: the label, or the artist. Many of these deals are made with artists when they're very young, and are often wildly exploitative and nearly impossible to get out of (see: Kesha trying and failing to get out of a deal made with a man who would go on to rape her). The whole industry is predicated on exploitation and honestly i don't give a poo poo if she's genuinely out to protect the little guy or just pissed off that some guy she really doesn't like owns her poo poo now, I think the larger point Swift is making has weight to it:

If one of the biggest pop stars in the world doesn't have control of the music she's created, what hope is there for the rest of us? (at this point if she really wants to triple-down on the woke points she's been striving for with her last video she should post an Insta of her reading some Marx, really get everyone going)

She’s lying because since that moment (for reasons unrelated to her) Kanye’s stock has dropped like a rock and she thinks she can change history because more people hate him now, and also because, once again, everyone say it with me now, Taylor Swift is constitutionally incapable of letting go of any and all sleights against her, real and perceived.

Like I listened to Reputation again today and that’s one of the core messages of that album, as well as other songs in her discography. There is nothing she does better than revenge, right?

edit: like basically where I stand on this is that despite her motives being questionable and despite clearly not being honest about everything Taylor has ended up on the right side of an issue with a lot of people I like and agree with standing by her (Halsey, Sky Ferreira, etc), and the wrong side is filled with people I like much less than her (the Biebers, Kanye, Scooter Braun as a stand in for generic white guys in record labels who are shitheads everywhere), so i guess she's a lot cunning and a little lucky. Also Todrick Hall attempting to take a stand with her and taking a huge L is hilarious.

Yeah I love Kanye but obviously pre trump Kanye, and while I don’t like Taylor it doesn’t mean she can’t be right (like with her recent promotion of Democrats during the mid terms also)

And not a defence of scooter but didn’t he help organise the Manchester benefit and also like tons of stuff with make a wish? I’m not saying he’s mother Teresa but painting every record exec as just pure evil is a bit ridiculous. Also let’s remember this is “I’m almost a billionaire off this poo poo” Taylor so it’s a bit rich to play victim as well. One executive isn’t the issue, the system is and then people like dr Luke are.

I assume he was involved in the Manchester benefit because of Ariana, who is his client (not that it wasn't a good thing he did, just providing context). He's just very representative of the larger issues as a whole, although probably the focus should be more on the guy who did the selling, because the deal that Taylor talked about (being able to "earn back" her old albums by making new ones for Big Machine) made it sound like they were holding her work essentially for ransom to attempt to keep her attached to the label when she wanted out. Braun is getting more attention because he's more of a public face, and he's got Bieber coming to defend him, and also Swift clearly has beef with the man. She knows what she's doing here, taking a larger issue regarding ownership and patriarchy in the music industry and using it to also take shots at someone she has personal issues with, but i suspect that she's struck a chord that resonates with a lot of pop artists in the industry, and the ones who don't feel personal loyalty to Braun will probably start sharing their stories of contracts signed while they were still teenagers that locked them into long deals that they inevitably began to bristle against as they grew more popular.
