Wouldn't hitting the less densely defended areas in the area work better than immediately face-grinding the biggest fortification? Or splitting the stack to lay siege to Imphal with part of the invasion force whilst the other elements sweep up the surrounding towns?

Probably but the army can move one mile a day, and the game engine includes such things as a Chinese city which has been under seige for 3+ years completely surrounded on all sides, under daily artillery bombardment and bombing raids, that can support a garrison of a half million or so and keep them in full supply over this timespan.

Given what we've seen the game engine do, do we want to see what happens when it tries maneuver warfare?

Imphal is very likely a stack of their best units. You want to kill that sooner rather than later. After this, Grey can fan out and slaughter garrisons until the doom stack from India turns up.

We strike at a tanker fleet, but get no hits.

The dive bombers have more effect.

The third wave also gets a hit.

Nope, still planes there.

There is some heavy fighting over Rabaul.

Losses are running high today.

I come out on top in plane losses, and continue to advance in points, as I'm shooting down more multi-engine planes.

Destroyed troops can't come back quickly, disabled troops can come back in short time by using up supply, and destroyed units take months to come back from a specific location (the ground combat engine is screwy)

If Grey can break the fortifications to 1 and rest a day and then shock attack he should be able to take the city, and then recover the disabled troops.

Grey: Do you have any re-inforcements on the way from Japan / China / whatever? Sort of a "While the Doomstack was moving, other units were being rebuilt, and now that Doomstack has reached the India lines the other units are on their way" situation.

Is the supply line secure?

Honestly, at this point the Allied AI is bogged down trying to take Rabaul and bomb Guadalcanal and unable to figure out how to invade a different location (after all these years I have no idea who controls Midway or the Aleutians) so some of the Home Island garrison could go forward.

Possibly to take Chittagong and Dhaka, or to repel the Soviet Response.

He does not have sufficient anti-tank to repel the Soviet response. He might be able to play the engine and slow them down by throwing bodies at them, but that would be an expensive plan.

I'm assuming that the game engine can't figure out a way to have the Soviets effectively invade Honshu, do they just end up sweeping through China or so they just chill at the end of the Korean peninsula?

A couple more kills for the guys at Guam.

Someone wanted to see my bomb Port Moresby – so here we go, with carrier support of course!

Leave them for the battleship you fools!

If those numbers had been the other way around, I would have been scared.

At least they had escorts!

Losses run high, but we get the hits!

That's more like it!

Well, that was a brutal day for the carrier force – they never get the chance to build up experience like the land based planes. My carrier wings are fast becoming the weakest of the lot!

They still get results though!

wedgekree

It worth it for the carriers to dump all your experienced pilots back into Training Command since they keep on dying to hope they drive up the base qualities of your new pilots since you rotate in so much? Also it worth it to send more fighters to Rabaul and Guam given how much they brawl and creeping losses?

Surrounded by ships, my guys decide to strike the heavily defended port.

See, this is more like it!

My god I'm losing so many planes.

But at least I'm getting some strikes!

We take more losses protecting the battleships.

Stop attacking their heavily defended base!

Their forts are nearly gone, so I will keep up the attack.

And my carriers are combat ineffective. I'm pulling them out – the allies have masses of fighters, but no strike capability, so the battleships should be fine.

At least we got a kill.

LCT: Little Coffin Transport.

Oh come on!

An Afternoon air strike provides a lot of kills, maintaining out 2:1 kill rate.

My men need time to reorganise.

The Silent Service want in on this as well.

Another disappointing day at Guam.

That was a nice haul for the battleships – lets hope they have enough ammo for Port Moresby!

He he he.

Continue the Murderation!

There is an LCM to break up the monotony.

We sail into Port Moresby proper, and this lot evade us!

They have one or two liberators here.

This doesn't take out the Privateers though.

The carriers are home, and need to go into rest mode.

Oh look, another LCT with the letter C after it!

Guam has another quiet day.

A disappointing number of ground kills, and my carriers really like to throw planes away.

I have no complaints about the battleships' performance.

How does plane repair work in the game? Do planes have individual repair times and airfield capacity limits like ships/ports (x number of engines able to be repaired per day per level of airfield), or does the game simply abstract "you have 10 hundred supplies, repairing damage costs 673.4, ok done", or somewhere in between by requiring presence of an engineering unit or something? I'm kind of curious how badly Grey actually hurt the Allies with his raid, or if it's a "nice on paper" kind of thing

Planes have a Reliability stat to determine how often they break down, and how difficult they are to repair

Planes also have a specified number of Engines (because of course a B-17 has four engines), which combines with Reliability to determine how many Aviation Support units are required to service the plane

If you have less than the total required number of Av Support in an airfield, then repairing planes takes longer than usual

If your airfield is damaged, then repairing planes takes longer

If your airfield is "overstacked", meaning there are more planes than a stacking limit as determined by the size of the airfield + Air HQs in the hex, then repairing planes takes longer than usual

Repairing planes also consumes supplies

Moresby is a great place to turn into a big airbase, I did the same thing in my game. It can be upgraded to size 9 (or at least size 8). It has coverage over a lot of the Solomons and New Guinea, including Rabaul. It is relatively easy to supply and defend as the Allies. It’s just about as good a place to base heavy bombers as any in the South Pacific.

100+ Liberators is a lot but probably the smartest thing the AI could realistically do right now would be to try and flatten Rabaul from the air, and Moresby is the best base for that. There are many examples of the AI being dumb but I don’t think this is one of them.

Operational losses usually only occur during take-off, flight or landing.

Writeoff is when it made it down and is deemed too damaged to repair.

All of those damaged planes have sustained damaged that will take somewhere between 1 and 15 days to fix (simultaneously if there is enough aviation support and the base is big enough).

So damaged can mean a small dent on the wing or it can mean enough holes to make a swiss cheese jealous.

Some Fog of War also applies.
