MOM WAS RIGHT

Seriously I thought they worked at the glass breaking factory or something and didn't notice the hundreds of panes of undamaged glass in the background.

Also I worked at a fancy hotel with big tempered/layered glass structures and sculptures, and I had not remembered they felt remarkably sturdy.

I wish that happened today for me. Put a new screen protector on my smart watch and nope it just stuck, so the one tiny bit of OCD I have spots it off centre.

I just play the OCD lottery now that I get most electronics with screens in a place there isn't some guy putting on a hundred a day who can do it for me.

There's a 100% chance I will put on a screen protector off center or with a bubble. The chance of scratching or scuffing looks very manageable after that fact.

There's an OSHA risk management analogy in there somewhere but I can't place it.

As someone who got paid to do a few hundred installs, I still loving suck at them. Installing screen protectors is the absolute worst. I got a piece of dust underneath mine and I've been too lazy to fix it so it's been like that for over a year. I feel bad for my customers because they totally wasted their money on me, but I couldn't exactly say no.

The secret is that some minor bubbles will go away over time (the heat of the screen cures the non-glass protectors and they tend to look better over time) but there's just no beating dust.

A friend of mine (and fellow goon) used to work at a company that assembled spaceflight hardware. He put his screen protector on inside the clean room and still managed to get two pieces of dust under the protector.

This one's a much broader camera angle than the one I saw earlier though. You can actually see the RV coming in this one; in the other it just dropped in outta the top of the frame without warning.

Note that the front end is already completely caved in before it ever lands on the boat, from impact with the ramp. The guy was dead and his passenger injured before it ever went airborne.

For sure, shakes the whole ramp on the first impact. Guy had to be hauling so much rear end to hit that ramp, and still have enough momentum to stick then landing 30 yards out

Looked the location up on Google maps and it's like 3km of sweeping descent that ends... abruptly with the ferry dock.

I see about 1.5 km from the start of the major descent but I suppose it definitely could happened before that, and 1.5 km is still a hell of a distance to go on a 10% grade with no brakes if they failed right at the start of the big slope. You could probably figure out an estimate of how fast the RV was going, at least if you ignore friction.

Very true :v:

I'm going to assume the RV reached whatever the terminal velocity it could have reached. That's like, what, 200 km/h for a skydiver? Where's the formula to convert skydiver velocity to RV velocity.

Also looking at google maps there's a brake check pullout at the top of the hill but the only runaway ramp is near the bottom of the hill maybe 100 meters before the terminal, nothing else in between. Unfortunately there isn't much other choice because before the ferry terminal is a town and before the town you've got a lake beside the road. There is also parking right beside the start of the ramp - as in to park or exit parking you have to cross the runaway ramp. I wouldn't be surprised if the driver deliberately missed the ramp to avoid smashing someone crossing the ramp, either in a car or on foot. Its very possible for the ferry line to extend past the ramp by a couple hundred meters as well.

It's one of those ghoulish things to say but that could have ended up so much worse in any number of ways.
