This right here is what I'd like to see a bit of too.

The lack of voice acting and animated cut scenes is something sorely missing too. I know a lot of that initially was budgeting constraints, but I had hoped that with the addition of Flashpoints at least some of the major recurring players would have been voice acted. I have to imagine sales of BT have given HBS at least enough to spring for a few actors/animators for the next installment.

My logic is basically that if I want to mainly shoot things, the Battlemaster is just a heavy 'mech with worse initiative, and if I want to have somebody run ahead of the rest of my assaults and mix things up at point blank range (and draw a ton of fire in the process), a maxed frontal armor 3M can shrug off more damage and punch harder and has more support hardpoints.

If you’re interested in pre-fight poo poo talking theres a documentary called “Knuckle” about an irish traveller family that were the bareknuckle boxing champs of Ireland for about a decade in the late 90s to early 2000s. Each family mails one another vhs tapes of their family champion calling the others out. Its primo-poo poo talking and then they fight in the middle of rural highways and in parking lots.

The BT equivalent periphery bandits and mercenary units going at one other, maybe

XLRP (has options for 3030 or 3049 timeframes, 3049 is betterrr) and the Civil War (3062) mod are basically that. They all add good piles of mechs but all are using their real models. None of the compilation mods have used kitbashed fake models for a long time since the model creation and import process was worked out.

It's a combination of general nerdrage and that fact that it's a Paradox game, who is famous for charging a large amount for tiny DLC and has a history of price-gouging.

You seem to have repeated yourself (it's Paradox published, not a Paradox developed game, so their pricing and DLC plans are purely under HBS's control, so the latter point is still general nerdrage)

The tears of time
I will say I love the game and put 100 hours into it, but I had to work at it for a while before I started enjoying it. I still don't find the early part of a campaign/career very fun. For me it starts getting good when you've unlocked some abilities and enough mechs/parts to make good specialized builds, which could be quite a few hours in your first go-around.

It's only improved as time's gone on, really, both the base game and the mod scene.

I guess a lot of people think the dlcs are overpriced, but whatever, it's a game you can play for 100 hours easily.

I made a post on general pilot/mech build advice.

More specifically for the beginning of the campaign, I'd recommend immediately getting rid of the Jump Jets on the Spider and use the weight to max out its armor - it makes it far more resilient, and while jumping is nice, it's already mobile enough build up evasion without them. It's main job is to step on lightly armored tanks, btw (melee deals 2x damage vs vehicles).

Another quick fix is stripping the AC2s off the Blackjack and giving it a single AC5 in their place. The more ideal loadout would be 2xLL 2xML, but AC5 + 4xML works and frees up tonnage relative to the AC2s to pack up more armor.

You can do great things with the Vindicator and Shadow Hawk if you refit them for brawling, but it's rather time consuming at the beginning of the campaign; try it if the game is really kicking your rear end and you'd rather spend a month or two doing away with the stock shitfits than repairing/healing after another frustrating drop. Nailing some SRM6s off salvage isn't too hard, but does have an element of luck involved, so you can leave the LRM5 on the Vindicator in the meantime but make sure to get rid of the PPC.

I bought this because it looks fun, couple questions.

1. Anyway to speed up the turns? Its real slow.
2. I've been using lights as a "park behind a wall, sensor lock someone every turn" sort of deal. Are they good for anything else?
3. I'm still kinda early in the campaign, should I start again with different options? 3 mech salvage seems super low, so i'm thinking of turning that up.
4. Is melee literally just a weight class thing?

Give all your pilots bulwark and always be in cover whenever possible.

Gang up on 1 enemy at at time. Shoot them from the sides or back when you can.

If the enemy is ganging up on 1 of your guys and they're running out of armor, have them fall back so someone else can draw their fire.

Medium laser and SRM6 should be your default weapons when customizing early on. You can get far just spamming those.

Spacebar when a mech is moving speeds up their animations drastically if you just want to skip watching walking.

There is a speed up entire game option in the settings menu now that speeds up everything by like 2x or something.

There is also a Quickcam mod that speeds up things a bit here and there.

For a 1st campaign playthrough just use default salvage.

Bigger is almost always better when it comes to mechs. Faster medium mechs fill all the roles lights do but with way more firepower and armor.

Melee is mostly by weight but some do higher than "normal" damage like the Shadow Hawk.

1. There's some mods for it, but I haven't used them since they improved the speed compared to release. Check the Nexus.
2. Some specific models are good for jumping far and ripping into the rear armor with flamers and medium lasers, but in general you'll always get more out of a heavier mech.
3. The only issue with restarting is that the beginning of the campaign and the end tends to be very samey. If you can stomach that, go wild.
4. Mostly. There are some parts that increase melee damage and a mech model that rocks an axe.

Punching is REAL REAL good on certain 'Mechs. Shadowhawk-2D, Grasshopper 5H, and then Banshee 3M all make outrageously vicious punchbots. The Grasshopper notably sticks around and keeps a spot in many people's endgame lances because it's just so good at jumping in and one shotting anything from behind.

Firestarters also fill that role early on, but without mods that include stuff like XL engines or Endosteel they don't really have enough weight to do it well enough.

When playing the un-modded game/campaign, the key to easy victory is abusing LoS and the initiative system. Reserve your units out of LoS from the enemy stuff, make them waste their turn walking towards you, and then pop out of LoS and unload on them. Followed by potentially unloading on them again a second time before they can move on the following turn. Repeat until dead!

Also, just playing cautiously helps, along with maneuvering for side shots. They're typically easier to hit, and a side shot has a far better chance of blowing off an enemy arm and or leg. to partially cripple an enemy.

My current lance is a spoiler assault mech (the Highlander that you get after that one mission), two King Crabs, and a Grasshopper. The Grasshopper almost always get the highest number of kills out of them, either by headshot or coring someone from behind. I have an Atlas and a third King Crab standing by but I'm not replacing the Grasshopper.

The Grasshopper is NOT a great punchbot IMO. Its melee damage is exactly average for its weight, and it's not tough enough for the "charge at everybody and punch" role past the mid game.

What it is, is a GREAT short-range jumping around and SHOOTING mech. Just load it with medium lasers, small lasers and machine guns and shoot the poo poo out of the back/side/head/core of your enemies. I only really punch with it if it's overheating and there's a convenient target next to it.

The Banshee 3M is the ultimate punch bot, which is good because it's useless otherwise. Just max out its frontal armor and load up the support hardpoints and a +++ melee damage mod if you've got one and CHARGE :killdozer:

Polka_Rapper posted:

The 732B isn't really a spoiler mech anymore, parts for it are just random flashpoint rewards now, just like the special SLDF Atlas, Black Knight and Griffin variants.

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

Grasshopper is an above average punch bot because of all the small weapon mounts it carries. An average punch plus a brace of six small lasers is just loving brutal and better than a great punch and few or no support weapons. It also lends itself well to skimping on weapon weight allowing you to put in a beefy melee mod or two.

Armor up the legs and it also does good work on DFA.

It also excells at jumping and shooting like you say. Ultimately it’s a really good punch bot that is versatile enough that it doesn’t get pigeon holed into only doing that.

This is kind of just semantics, but the thing with the Grasshopper is that unless you're massively overheating, shooting at close range is almost always a better choice for it than punching. Medium laser spam + support weapon spam > punch + support weapon spam because its punch damage by itself is just dead average.

You should see it with two +60 melee mods and a +stb dmg mod. With the chassis quirk it punches for 245 damage before you add in six SLs. More than once I've seen it rip the entire side off a fully armoured heavy with one hit, leg and all. And even if you miss the leg, you deal over 100 stab so the slightest tickle from anything else puts the pilot down for a second injury.
