I know it's bad to get into aggro pissing-contests with other tanks, but I didn't make this one warrior choose to try me, during raid roulettes, as I break in the gunbreaker. Their efforts were futile. Once hate was on me, it was superglued.

Real talk: This job is flavorful, intuitive, and strong. I hope it stays that way for a while.

I can not loving wait until I get home so I can get the last 30 levels I need to unlock my own GNB.

Finished the MSQ. Holy poo poo! Extremely good, maybe their best yet. Think Stormblood remains my favorite for reasons but Shadowbringers is A loving plus. Various thoughts, with :siren: major loving spoilers :siren:. Definitely advise not browsing them if the context is stuff you haven't experienced yet.

-Excellent dungeons! Atmospheric, cinematic, even more integrated into the zone they're in, rather than a collection of hallways intersecting at harsh angles. Lots going on in the background. Loved the 71 dungeon for the great first impression and the music, the 77 dungeon for the mood (felt like mines/crypts from Vagrant Story), and the final 2 dungeons for being extra. Ridiculous spectacle, things get super weird and fantastical and it's amazing. The final one in particular has lots of stretches where it's really not safe to stand still. Bold choice and I think it works.

-Enjoyed the Trust system. My expectations were fulfilled - learn boss patterns in a low stress environment, get all the loot you want, take your time. Adds the impression that the Scions actively participate more in the in-game events. They only had one critical error in my experience so far, but I was able to finish off the boss with the tank.

-I think the music overall is next level. All of it - dungeons, zones, bosses (main boss theme feels a bit like Metal Gear Rising). Soken's always delivered but I think he raised his game just a bit here. The night themes especially are more complex than the (quite good but easy to see commonalities between them) arrangements of quiet piano with reverb that we get in HW and SB. Was not expecting the first dungeon music to rip so much.

-The zones, oh my god, environment artists did some loving work here. All blew me away at some point but the final section is spectacular. Fantastic and totally fitting (endgame zone, seriously don't read if you haven't experienced all of it) to have a perfect & wondrous city under the sea look like Rapture, recreated by a Randian antagonist whose best friend is a character from More's Utopia.

-I like the itemization towards the end of the MSQ, seems sensible. How it works: (AF + final MSQ gear) MSQ requires finishing one of the role quest lines, which puts you at level 80. Finishing that opens up full left side gear minus belt. Jewelry and belt are attainable in the final story dungeon. Feels better than ARF. Also the SAM AF is super good.

-Speaking of, SAM continues to flow as expected. So much burst, better fulfills the class fantasy of More Midares. AoE is pretty good, and the cooldowns more or less synchronize. Will take some time to perfect but I like what's there.

-Enjoyed the pacing. (recurring MSQ event) I like the rests after each story dungeon. Lends the sense that there's a passage of time and that people, you know, sleep.

-In more detail, JESUS CHRIST THAT STORY IS GOOD. It does not pull punches. Real rollercoaster. And I was skeptical coming into this - I know the team does good work but I expected SB to end differently. But they nailed it in ShB. Clearing the first story dungeon was a singular experience. (1st MSQ dungeon) Parting the sky and bringing the night is an awesome moment, like there's hope. Overall it's a wild ride, complex and interesting. The antagonists are outstanding. (MSQ thru endgame) Innocence was fine, like he's clearly a bad guy, but Emet-Selch is extremely good. Loved his optional exposition that comes up from time to time. Might need to think on it more but the initial reaction is that he's a complex, logically consistent opponent. I initially took his lazy saunter and half-closed eyelids as arrogance, and it might be that, but the reveals from his friend in the Tempest show that he's worn down carrying a heavy burden for who knows how long. I liked how subtle it is and how it works both ways. The Ascian lore is holy poo poo good. "Remember we lived." Between ShB and HW, it might be that the team does their best story work when they focus on one major problem and area. Also, (ending) I love how it ends where it begins.

-YOKO TARO TO COME

-Leveling was easy for me thanks to roulettes. Only hit an MSQ level roadblock once, and that was quickly fixed. Love how they did sidequests and FATEs. Gating ground mount speed behind a few FATEs in each zone is an improvement to be sure. Maybe would like a zone or two to open their vendor sooner?

-Kobolds in the First rule.

-(going to the final zone) I LOVE YOU BIG NEIGHBOR

-The Crystarium feels spacious enough for all those NPCs and players (hundreds during peak atm). Feels like there's room for all those refugees and scholars and whatnot. Felt busy but never crowded to me, even with the launch rush.

-Think the final two trials and story dungeons are a super good balance of mechanics and spectacle. The final trial is harder than the HW victory lap but to me it felt a touch easier than Shinryu did at SB launch. The visual language seemed a touch clearer to me.

Without making a big effortpost right now, while I enjoyed Stormblood after finishing the Shadowbringers MSQ it feels like Stormblood was the vegetables we had to eat before the Shadowbringers dessert.

From the jump it's much weirder and more fantastical, and every part of it seems to take joy in it. I also expected them to roll the difficulty of normal content back further, but some of it has some real bite and I'm glad to see it.

Is there a good guide to how to play 5.0 Summoner yet? Preferably like, not a video.

I'm trying to get back into it, having only done a lot with it way back in ARR, but even with the toning down it got from 4.0, and how obviously the heart of it is just keeping up DoTs and spamming Ruin, it's still a case of having a lot of buttons that very clearly need to be pushed in your face all at once.

I've been playing SMN, and so far my (probably horribly optimized) 76 opener has been something like:

TD -> R2 -> EG1 -> EG2 -> R2 -> ED -> Enkindle -> DWT -> R3 -> EG1 -> EG2 -> R3 -> Fester -> R3 -> R3 -> Fester

Tri-Disaster for dots, Ruin 2 to keep GCD rolling, Egi Assaults to get those building charges while also stocking Ruin 4 for Bahamut phase, (since they no longer decay so holding on to them for a bit doesn't hurt) then just weave in Aetherflow stuff when you have free space.

Waiting for FBT plus pre-80 FBT is just weaving in Egi Assaults and Aetherflows, I imagine 80 SMN will make sure to burn all charges of EA between Bahamut and FBT since Demi-Phoenix dismisses your egi.

SMN is so active now I love it. Even Titan-Egi is getting use when doing FATEs.

I talked about this a bit in FC chat, but I think part of it is just because Doma and Ala Mhigo were both built up since the very start. We knew that Doma was Fantasy Japan way back in 2.X, so the only thing they could make is Fantasy Japan. Shadowbringers has no such ties so the devs are free to just go hogwild and make the craziest poo poo imaginable.

The Great Twist
So I got AST to 80 and did some 80 things.

And well, this job is way better than it ever has been from a gameplay perspective. The cards require way more decision making, especially since you can easily get 3 or 4 cards going at the same time. Celestial Intersection is love, and Horoscope is surprisingly potent, and useful with the amount of "eat a continual bunch of aoe" mechanics there are. Playing AST since 3.0 and have never had this much fun. AST is way higher apm than it ever has been, and I'm glad I went AST over WHM first.

Pros, condensed:
Cards - everything about them. More actions, more decisions, no loving OG spire or ewer.
Celestial Intersection - My favourite new AST skill. Low cooldown and great ability for an oGCD. The shield stacks with Galvanize and Divine Benison.
Celestial Opposition - The regen stacks with other regens, and the shield stacks with other shields.
Horoscope - Doesn't say the potency on it, but it's probably 400-500. Get a ton of use out of it.
Never had any MP issues with sloppy Lucid usage.

If I have any complaints, it's that:
Dps wise I'm way less potent than my 72 WHM.
Celestial Opposition feels weak for the CD time (120)
Collective Unconsciousness is the worst bubble

Beat the MSQ and went through ShB as NIN. Not sure I like the job, AOE is a pain, and Kassatsu managment seems to be key to a lot of it. I find myself checking timers on ogcds and then looking up and seeing I'm missing a mechanic. At times its fast and other times it seems the job is too slow. It seemed ok at the end of stormblood but now I need to get used to the additional mechanics or maybe switch to something else if it still doesn't feel good.

Yes.
Decided to give healing a go for the first time since I got SCH to 70 and then switched over to tanking full-time and uh, it took me half the dungeon (The SB dungeon with the DIE DIE DIE last boss, can't remember the dungeon name) to figure out why I couldn't cast Bio/Miasma/Bane even though it threw them on my bar after I switched from WAR. Also, went about 75% of the dungeon before I figured out why I didn't have a fairy out- I'm not a clever man. Went well enough, but that could have been embarrassing- especially the part where Lustrate wasn't on my bar and I had to find it in the skill menu mid-fight.

It did so much with what so much of the game has spent a very long time building over the past six years. It's opened up and explained so many mysteries, while leaving plenty of others in place, and gave it jaw dropping music, presentation, and reveals. loving hell, I could feel my heart thumping in my chest just reading quest text in the last area because it was such an other worldly reveal to see.

How's DRG now? Dropped it at the end of HW as I wasn't enjoying playing it in any non-MSQ content anymore. Sitting at 65 RDM in the middle of Stormblood at the moment and trying to decide whether to pick DRG back up with the help of the pre-order XP bonus earring or keep on powering through as RDM.

DRG got a bit more streamlined with Disembowel picking up the slack Heavy Thrust left behind when it went away. True North is now a charged action (with 2 charges) so pop that poo poo like it's candy and you'll never miss a positional again. It's also so easy to get time added to your gauge, the new max time being 30 seconds AND with your AoE combo the fastest way to earn some time if you really need it, and free to use now that TP is gone. It only takes 2 Mirage Dives to get Blood of The Dragon now, but Jump (and High Jump at lvl 74) is/are the only way to get Dive Ready to trigger it. Spineshatter Dive lost stun and Dive Ready which is disappointing with the new emphasis on actually interrupting certain boss attacks.

Overall I'm loving it even at just lvl73, feels way less punishing to get your momentum going again should you lose it, and your new AoE combo with Coerthan Torment means you won't feel impotent half the time in big fights. A++ would Jump again.

Well, after getting to HW, I switched off to AST to try healing a bit, and just made it through the level 50 class quest. I'm not sure I like how completely disconnected the cards thing is from your healing. It kind of just feels like a minigame, like your character's so bored with the dungeon they're just playing solitaire between heals. I might give WHM a shot and see if I like the flavor better there. Healer queues are certainly impressive, though. You can pick any dungeon you want, and it just pops instantly, like everyone was just waiting for you.

How?! So long as you have tank stance on (and there’s no reason to ever have it off if you’re the only tank), you’d have to just not be attacking to lose aggro.

One thing that I’ve been enjoying is helping random people out in the field while we’re both doing quests with mobs. We rarely speak to each other but more times than not they’ll return the favor. It’s small but it’s something you miss once everyone is in endgame.

I've only played around with DRG briefly, but I'm strongly considering swapping my "main" melee class to it instead of SAM. The pointless buff management is gone, the timer's almost a non-issue, the positionals were never all that hard anyway, and all in all it's a lot more accessible.

Well this weekend was two days of not being able to advance the story. There's a zone split in the second dungeon and every time I cross it I get kicked from the server, and when I return it puts me out in the world instead of the dungeon and if I try to re-queue it tells me I can't be in a second instance of duty finder until I guess the people in it finally kick me or I time out.

I will say the thing I miss most about the old AST cards is the pocket heal you got from Lady of Crowns, and that I have let tanks get lower than I like/die because I was cheesing redraw a bit longer than I should have, but it's nice since the card son the whole are more universally useful, but you have to pay attention to get the most of out them (eg watching which seals you have up for Divination, determining if you should redraw or Arcana into a Lord/Lady of crowns for extra damage). Also we have more healing tools now so that's nice. I've actually hot key'd Celestial Opposition since it's a decent oGCD heal along with Celestial Intersection instead of me using it to cheese card buff, regen and refresh timers. I do miss that and Time Dilation but c'est vie.

Healing is definitely harder in the new content. I've seen tanks die despite my best efforts trying to wall pull in the early ShB dungeons, but it seems most have wised up and are doing single pulls overall. We'll see how it looks as I get further in.

One of the problems is the second set of adds -do- have to be tanked, and without prior experience with that fight it's very easy for the tanks to just not notice, and get the DPS and healers killed.

I've been hitting all three with a caster LB3 if it's up after the transition before the second half gets going, with maybe a delay so people can see the first AoEs. It makes an absolutely huge difference to the difficulty of the check.
