That is something to check out. I just took a look. It seems like the only things available for my dates are the weekly motels on the way to downtown. There were a couple of really nice places, but it very high prices. Not much in between. Thanks for the idea though.

Oh, yeah. There’s one at Valley View and Dean Martin. I used to live five minutes from there. I’ll price that out. Thanks

I made my arrangements, and I’m going to be in Vegas for three weeks next month. Anyone want to recommend a tattoo artist who doesn’t need to book more than a month in advance? I’ve gotten a lot of work from Broken Dagger and Voodoo, back when Voodoo had a few good artists. I got a piece from JaySB’s friend, last time. I’m always interested in finding new artists, though.

The space I was planning to put it on is all illustrative stuff. A piece I had put in that area a couple months back:

I'm flexible, though. It doesn't have to be in that style, or go in that space.

Check the Smashed Pig. Not sure if they have TVs in the dining room, but they do at the bar. Best restaurant downtown by a mile.

I'm already back, but I just watched UFC at various bars and casinos. It was all good.

Also very good was Lotus, it lived up to the hype and then some. The crispy duck dish I had has to have been one of the best things I've ever eaten. I'll be going there every time from here on out.

I'm going to be the Four Queens for my first twelve nights. I booked a "premium" room through Priceline. Think there's any point dropping a few bucks at check-in with a stay that long booked through a third party? I pulled it last year at the Linq for about the same length stay with weak results.

I'm also at the East Side Cannery for seven nights in a petite suite. I'm not even sure what they'd upgrade me to at that joint. I still picture the Nevada Palace there, lol.

Edit: The answer is “no.” I didn’t get poo poo, lol.

I've never had any luck with slipping them a few bucks at check in for a upgrade. In fact, actually got downgraded once at Luxor trying this. I had a tower room and they 'upgraded' me to a pyramid room which was poo poo. I did like the fact that at South Pointe the guy gave me my money back when he couldn't find a upgraded room for me.

It's all obviously occupancy dependent. If the hotel is slower, they're gonna bump you up to a nicer room if available. If it's say Labor Day Weekend, you're probably not getting anything. Also your approach is probably important. "Hey, it's my anniversary, if there's any upgrades available we'd greatly appreciate it" as you slide the $20 in with your credit card and ID is gonna work way better than "So, here's $20, got can you find me a better room?"

Any advice for a guy going to Vegas the first time (and solo, at that)? Will be there in a couple of weeks (Sunday-Wednesday) after doing a bunch of hiking. I've combed through the thread and know I want to do Absinthe, the museums, basic gambling (i.e. learn how to play craps), and probably a couple of buffets (I love food, but dunno if I wanna splurge on the super fancy stuff when I'm there by myself this time). I guess maybe also go fire guns and do a club tour or something? Any chill bar recommendations or similar places where folks just kinda shoot the poo poo?

Are these places plastered with slots machines even at the bar?

My most vivid Vegas memory is spending nearly an hour on the strip trying to find a bar without the constant dining or presence of gambling.

I failed. Went back to my hotel room, smoked weed and took a nap.

I can’t speak for the others but the Chandelier Bar while in a casino has no slot machines inside. You don’t even know you’re in a casino except when walking through it to get to the bar.

If you're staying on the Strip, look up Ellis Island just around the corner. drat good BBQ, a microbrewery on site (with decent beers), and their craps tables can be excellent spots to learn. Often not too busy, usually a very cheap buy in ($5 min) and the dealers will help you out.

Unfortunately Casino Royale hosed itself all up and went down to one $10 min table all the time, so on-strip craps for newbs has kinda gone out the window.

While not on the strip, there's a bit of a shithole out in Henderson called Joker's Wild that has $1 craps Mon-Thur and goes all the way up to $2 Fri-Sun. It's a rough crowd but I've played for hours for a few bucks. The dealers in all honesty arn't the friendliest but if you want to want to try something out and not blow wads of cash it's my go to place.

Also please dont play 6:5 blackjack... you will lose more money playing five dollar 6:5 than if you just sack up and play $25 3:2.

But when the casinos see their 6:5 tables jam packed, they convert more of the tables with good rules to poo poo tables. To get a decent game with S17, now I have to play heads up in the high limit room with five casino employees sweating me.

So, my wife, our 10 year old daughter, and I will be heading to Vegas in a week and half for three nights. My wife and I have had a blast just the two of us a few times, in no small part thanks to the advice here, but this is the first time we will be taking the kid. I think that we are pretty much all set, but have a few questions I thought I'd throw out to the goons.

First, we are currently set with reservations for Rivea (because we are staying at Delano and I told my kid she can take a poo poo while looking out over the strip), Mott 32 (because the kids second favorite food is dim sum), and Bazaar Meat (because the kids favorite food is prosciutto, iberico, and fancy cheese). I'm having second thoughts about Mott 32 as it appears to be comically expensive and the reviews that I've seen aren't great. Does anyone have any experience at Mott 32 or have any other suggestions? We are seeing a show at Bally's in the afternoon, and then the kid and her mom are getting their hair done at Cosmopolitan so they've requested fancy while I probably get some gambling in. I've been thinking maybe Beauty and Essex or Lotus of Siam or one of the new places in the Palms or something old school vegas-y. As to the last category, we went to Hugo's Cellar and had a blast last time, but there's nothing on the menu for my daughter so that is out. I was looking at Top of Binion's, but it looks pretty dumpy. Anyway, please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Second, is there anywhere to play blackjack near Bally's with relatively low minimums (preferably $10) and some non-lovely rules. I usually play at El Cortez, but I don't think that I'll be able to get there this trip. Was thinking of Cromwell or Ellis Island, but I have not been too either.

Finally, I think that this is a lost cause, but is there anywhere near the Delano that would have relatively low minimums and non-lovely rules at night mid-week?

Thanks in advance. Please feel free to rail on me for ruing Vegas by bringing a kid.

Yeah Ellis island is right behind Bally's, you can walk to it no problem. I like going big at Vegas but we always end up at Ellis island at least once for beer or for BBQ or for gambling. Happens every time and I don't mind at all.

My wife went to the Mott 32 in Hong Kong and absolutely loved it, but we haven't been to the one in Vegas yet. That's disappointing to hear about the reviews.

If the kid decides she'd rather double up on prosciutto, et al, look into Eataly at Park MGM.

Eataly is great and has lots of options but can be brutally crowded if there is an event at T Mobile arena. We went there at like 6 PM the same night as Paul McCartney was playing and ended up eating our food standing up. So basically go at any other time of day. Which is what I tried to tell my wife and sister in law, to no avail.

Mott 32 is good BUT I would skip it and go to Ping Pang Pong for dim sum and fire off another restaurant instead. Can't go wrong at Lotus. If they want to stay at Cosmo for dinner, Scarpetta (get the Chef's Table) and Milos are great options. Carbone is practically a must try at Aria. Costa Di Mare is arguably my favorite seafood/Italian restaurant. L'Atelier De Joel Robuchon, Twist,Guy Savoy, Joel Robuchon on the upper end of fancy Franch in ascending price and fanciness. IMO it's not really worth the trip downtown just to eat. How does the kid feel about Omakase style sushi? Because Kame, Yui and Kabuto are all incredible.

Headed to Vegas next weekend. Going to Lotus of Siam (thanks JaySB!) and probably going to at least one club (Saturday?). Trying to figure out if my friend has an invite somewhere; otherwise we're probably waiting in line. Ellis Island sounds good too; definitely going to check that out. Probably Friday night.

I'm going to Vegas for 2 days in November with my friend and our plan is just to play blackjack/craps the entire time we are there. From what I read if we are looking for 3:2 blackjack with low minimums our best options are Treasure Island and Ellis Island. The room rates for the weekend we are going are about the same. Is there a substantial difference between either one?
