It's not some grand conspiracy. Hong Kong under British rule was way better than nowadays where a bookseller can be spirited away to neverland for printing the wrong words. The British were extremely hands off and basically just let Hong Kongers run themselves.

Each successive HK SAR regime is getting worst.

we had one of the most peaceful demonstrations last time during the umbrella movement.

Would it be justified in your view if they did?

I would assume one way, but I try to figure out what a person is consistent in so I can see where they're coming from before saying they're wrong or right. The only consistency I've gotten from what you post (here, at least) is that you're very, very authoritarian. So maybe that's the kind of thing you'd be into?

HK IS NOT CHINA, yet. I’m sure if It was just another Chinese city none of this would allow to happen. No right to demonstrate, no right for free association, no freedom of the press, and expression. Advocating for LGBT equality got shot down by the government.

If HK police cleared the crowd in legco that would at the same time affect the 550k march. The police is a lot more passive since 6/12 since the public is pissed at excessive police force.

An ultimatum was set by the police for everyone to leave by 12am. 4 protestors wanted to stay overnight but everyone inside dragged them because no one should be left behind.

tear gas grenades were fired and the special squad raptors deployed at midnight.

Everyone knows we are talking about 1 country 2 systems. The extradition ordinance and the continuing events are undermining HK’s autonomy. Just withdraw the bill already.

I like to be part of China and many Hong Kongers as well.

Heck, I would have a one country one system in China, if China could actually have reform.

This whole fiasco since February could have easily been prevented. To deal with the murder in Taiwan case:

1. Legco set a one time extradition to Taiwan with sunset conditions.

The pro establishment government legco party members - the ones actually loving bankrolled by the China Liason Office refused.

head of the Department of Justice refused.

2. Not this current case but subsequent cases make murder a extraterritorial crime - like bribery and sexual abuse of minors

Nah man, I'm just trying to get where you're coming from. You can get a sense of that sort of thing from what people usually argue for or defend and stuff, then maybe it makes more sense when they're arguing for something and you don't understand why.

Are you gonna say you dont usually argue for super authoritarian stuff though? Come on.

arguing for China isn't transitively equivalent to arguing for authoritarianism since, as we've seen with their treatment of the HK protests, their response hasn't been particularly iron-handed at all

hell, Seattle police handled the WTO protests in 1999 more harshly than this

That doesn't mean China isn't authoritarian and trying to extend its full authoritarian reach over Hong Kong.

of course China isn't bringing in the full arm of the state down on the Hong Kong protesters. that would only turn people against them even more. they're not turning it into an unelected dictatorship and dissolving the assembly with the stroke of a pen and there's a reason for that: smart authoritarian regimes do things gradually. it's like the Grover Norquist quote about shrinking government to the point where you can drown it in a bathtub

the WTO protests were anti-capitalist and anti-globalization, and no threat to that global order is too small to ignore. so that's why the Seattle police got so involved. i don't know how much of that belief is widespread among the Hong Kong protests, or what their beliefs are at all besides a fear of further encroachment into their autonomy. and if that's the case, the smart thing to do is work slowly
