The goon with the mom hoarding silver brought up another good point though, unrelated to the actual value of the gold or silver in question. What stops someone from just shooting you in the head and taking what they want anyway? I remember the first time I met some merchant wandering around in the metro/sewer systems and he tried to sell me some expensive rear end stimpacks that I really needed and as I was sitting there thinking about how to best scrounge my currency and what I could barter... My favorite thing about gold weapons/tools/armor is that it's one of the softer and more malleable metals in the world. Making it extra lovely for any non-electronic use. I've got boomer fam that just turned in a whole bunch of silver because it's their retirement fund, they had to pay like $300 in shipping alone.
