Gold also has an inherent weakness in that science may render it obsolete for electronics as they develop new materials.
It could very well go the way of diamonds and end up being an entirely artificial value with a few industrial uses.

That's true, but gold has been valuable for basically all of history.

Wallpaper, kindling, insulation.

Or you can bleach it if you need it to be blank ("yeah but that takes work and raw materials" well so does turning gold coins or ingots into electronics)

It was valuable because it was a commodity with fixed, government-controlled supply that was highly portable, imperishable, and could be easily verified against counterfeiting in the days before printing presses got good enough to make a dollar serve the same function. Not cause shiny rock has money magic.

When the first part changed - say, when Spain flooded the market with South American gold without a corresponding rise in supply of things to buy with that gold - the result was runaway inflation and an economic crash, not that they were suddenly Extra Rich because of all that intrinsic gold-value.

Not that are workable and don't corrode. Brass is a fair substitute except for how extended skin contact turns it, and you, green. Titanium nitride and zirconium nitride show up in mass-produced costume jewelry sometimes but they're basically a thin plating that flakes off eventually

Gold and precious metals only really have value in stable societies where you can afford to trade shiny things for food, water, etc. As soon as society collapses into post-apocalyptic survival, nobody is going to accept worthless soft metal for anything.

At last, he held the throat of his beater.
At the bank today, was in line behind mega-chud. Trump stickers all over his busted van, which was missing a rear window. He says to the teller, "I want to withdraw everything."

"Everything?"

"From both accounts."

The teller looks concerned. "What're you gonna do with that money, darlin'?"

He writes something on a piece of paper and presses it to the glass. The teller shakes her head. The teller nearby reads it, and says, "Don't do that."

"They're gonna send US Marshalls to my house if I don't," he says.

"It's a scam," says the teller.

"I want to withdraw everything."

"Don't give them all that money," says the teller.

Trying to look tough, the chud says, "I ain't giving them poo poo."

"If we give you that money, where's it going?"

"In my pocket."

A girl with an eastern European accent getting served at the window nearby says, "It's a scam. I got that call, too. Don't give them your money."

A Jamaican dude next to her says, "Tell them to meet you at the police station. They'll hang up."

He ignores them. Of course he ignores them. I leave as he's getting his money.

It was a microcosm of this country. He's gonna do it. I can feel it. It doesn't matter how many people try to walk him off that ledge. Grifted again, even unto death.

The goon with the mom hoarding silver brought up another good point though, unrelated to the actual value of the gold or silver in question.

What stops someone from just shooting you in the head and taking what they want anyway?

I remember the first time I met some merchant wandering around in the metro/sewer systems and he tried to sell me some expensive rear end stimpacks that I really needed and as I was sitting there thinking about how to best scrounge my currency and what I could barter... I had a realization and shot him in the head and took all his stimpacks for free*. Wasteland trading.

Eight points of contact at all times!
My favorite thing about gold weapons/tools/armor is that it's one of the softer and more malleable metals in the world. Making it extra lovely for any non-electronic use.

I've got boomer fam that just turned in a whole bunch of silver because it's their retirement fund, they had to pay like $300 in shipping alone.

This kind of person is why I just stopped arguing. The kind of person to support Trump, especially today, has hit the point where no sensible debate will ever shift them. Either something hurts them on such a personal level that it shocks them out of it, or they go to their graves with hatred.
