What a lovely loving industry when you have to be thankful a company didn't abandon or sell DLC for their early access game.

This is fuckin' sad man... because it's true. But it's cool at the hardcore fans care this much about the game to do it, that owns.

Did the VR update get a release date?

unfortunately not, after looking around it seems the genesis of the billboard was a classic nms update summoning thread

people were excited expecting a release date during e3, nothing happened, anxiety needed to be released, cue billboard with ASCII "gimme" guy getting funded within like 24 hours of conception

The VR update has always been scheduled for "summer", so probably before September but that's all we know.

Hello Games isn't a huge team if I remember correctly and I'd rather they didn't crunch to meet some arbitrary deadline. Just release it when it's actually ready. If some people need to buy a billboard to vent their excitement then who really cares?

It would be nice to know what the third thing is though, I would have thought they could have announced that by now at least.

Yeah, saves from before they made major changes to world generation or campaign progression are the most at risk, but just one content drop back should be fine.

I'm gonna wait until the update comes out, or I'll be bored/frustrated of it before it gets 'good' again.

FWIW there's a YouTube of the VR mode that has a few minutes of footage that isn't in the video on the HG site. With the exception of VR, literally nothing looks any different, hopefully that's just because it's a spoilered version or something.

The Black Hole Suns are having a contest/raffle right now where you receive one entry every ten black holes you log. Prizes are an Oculus Rift, PS4 VR, or a $300 gift card depending on what platform you submit holes for.

Whats crazy is that since the contest started they've been logging something like 120 per hour, when previously they would be lucky to get that many in a day. In a few hours they will probably break the 10k mark.

Also at approximately the same time, someone else released a tool to automatically log black holes visited (via a combination of screenshot OCR and looking in save files, PC only) in a format that can be bulk imported into the BHS website.

I need some help here. I just started getting into this game hard, after playing it for like a day at launch. I have a base on the first planet I explored, a toxic planet. I recruited my overseer and scientist.

I just found a planet in the same system with breathable air, a temperate climate, plentiful flora and fauna, and the only drawback is Hostile sentinels.

I'd like to move my base here. Is this possible? Can I trash my old base and bring my overseer and scientist over? Also, is this a terrible idea?

Build a new base terminal on the good planet, then delete your old base and you will be reimbursed with all construction materials, so you can build it up somewhere else. The specialists follow their respective workplaces. Just make sure you have enough storage space, and/or a quick way to move between both planets.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Hostile Sentinel worlds are annoying. You can just hide out in your buildings but who wants to do that? They need to let you build defenses for your base.

So basically I can, but I shouldn't? Hostile sentinels seemed like less of a problem than no air and a toxic atmosphere, but I honestly have little experience with how much of a pain it would be in practice

haveblue
Aug 15, 2005

Toilet Rascal
They're actually a pretty big pain in the rear end. No air or toxic atmosphere mean you just have to pop open the quick menu every couple of minutes. Hostile sentinels will aggro you for no reason and chip away at your shield at unpredictable intervals. And if you shoot them down they just get angrier and spawn more.

Doing stuff on hostile sentinel planets usually involves constantly sprinting at 1 pip of wanted until you get tired of not being able to take more than a few moments to process anything you stumble on.

Honestly just keep your starter base and fill it in with the things that are necessary to progress through the base building story until you find something really cool like an Exotic or Mega Exotic and then move there and set up a real base.

I like living on hostile sentry planets because you can easily do whatever combat missions you want in almost complete safety because it's just a case of popping out, aggroing a sentry, shooting them until the mission is complete then just going back inside. The minor inconvenience of them aggroing when you don't want them to is just solved by going in a building, which is where almost all your base stuff has to be placed anyway.

All the planets in all the galaxies could fit in your postal code.

You can have a nice base on a cliff by the sea, but the planets are small and you are big and move fast.

Sort of. It has bigger mountains than it did at launch, and sometimes you find one that's actually mountain size

It kills me that a game with NMS's ambition and procedural generation hasn't been married to Elite's flight model and actual planet generation. A NMS planet with valleys/mountains and actual orbit patterns like Elite would just be the bumble bee's knees.

Did something similar. My first base is some kind of elaborate wooden labyrinth with my one vault stuck into the ground at an angle. Still, until I've unlocked everything and/or find a good enough planet, that dumb prank of a base is it, as far as I'm concerned.

I really hope they make the menus and terrible inventory system better in the next update because I just loaded this up to test my new laptop and flew around a bit since it's nice seeing the game maxed out at full details at 60fps then I opened up my menu... saw 50 million different lovely elements that I don't know what goes to what and just said "gently caress this."

God drat it's like they're trying their hardest to make things as boring as possible.

SCheeseman
Apr 23, 2003

The VR version will be interesting since porting the menus over verbatim would be terrible so they're gonna have to redesign them somehow. Then again, they're terrible in 2D too.

Somewhere back in this thread was a collection of all the VR impressions back in April. There's no footage, but it sounds like you look at your wrist and a holo-display type thing pops out for the inventory. So you can swipe between screens and drag and drop items. It sounds like a great solution but I'm hoping the regular version gets a bit less terrible too.

Although at this point I'd just be happy for things like 1st person vehicles to carry over as well, I'm used to the cumbersome UI at this point. It'd be nice to have an alternative to the bad Borderlands/RC car vehicle controls.
