One of the best parts of the new series was the special episode, where one member of the cast (I think it was Siegfried, or maybe Reinhard's VA) went to the Legend of the Galactic Heroes cafe in Tokyo (I didn't even know there was one till then) and was interviewed about the show. The older VA for the same character from the original OVA's comes in about the half way mark, and then the author of the original light novels makes an appearance for part of it too. They have some food from the cafe, try one of the drinks and just chat about the story, their views on the character and how they play them, the differences in the versions etc. It must have been up on Crunchyroll at some point to say I saw it, but looking now I don't see it. Either that, or I'm going mad and imagined the whole thing

LOGH is great because it's one of the only shows that feels like it does logistics well. Love to have Yang call the result of any operation off it and then be forced to sit there in a resigned huff as it plays itself out over the course of the next five episodes.

Bohemian Nights posted:I've always been curious, how are the (translated) books? Worth picking up? They're dry. I picked up the audiobooks for the first three and could only make it through two and a half. It's not that they are boring, but they are very much in the mode of a history book recounting distant events. There's a certain level of detachment between the reader and the events that I just couldn't take after a while. Possibly getting the physical book and reading it would reduce that? I dunno.

They are dry but they’re also quick, easy reads. Plotwise the show is quite faithful to them, you won’t run into much you haven’t already seen. The biggest difference is that Dusty isn’t Yang’s sidekick right from the start, he only shows up a bit later on. There’s a couple of amusing touches like the narrator laying it on really thick about how beautiful Reinhard is.

Yeah I felt the point of that little arc was to show how the empire has literal space peasants more than anything and how poor and downtrodden the empire keeps them for no real reason other than commitment to the aesthetic. Like it's obviously really ridiculous to have communities of low technology tenant farmers living under feudal lords in the far future, so it says a lot about how horrifying the empire is to have deliberately socially engineered that situation.

Yeah I guess space peasants makes sense but I’m mostly talking about how in order to feed their fleet of millions they send a few dozen guys down to a planet and steal the groceries they have in their cupboards

If I remember right, wasn't that more like "We'll take all our citizen's food, then the FPA will have to feed them in order to avoid losing face"?

klapman posted:If I remember right, wasn't that more like "We'll take all our citizen's food, then the FPA will have to feed them in order to avoid losing face"? Yeah, it was a two part plan - they stripped most of the food supplies from the planets they knew they couldn't defend from the FPA, then snuck around and smashed the FPA's supply lines, forcing the FPA to forcibly re-requisition the food they gave to the civilians and thus utterly wreck their own "we're here to free you and give you better lives!" messaging.

I would totally believe that in a society that was forcibly regressed into an idealized nostalgic version of like the 19th century, the people would be living harvest-to-harvest and would be starving until next year if you took their food stocks. edit: I mean it would probably be a lot of effort to send in soldiers to raid pantries for jars of preserves but without winter food stocks they'd be SOL BattleMaster fucked around with this message at 04:51 on Jul 5, 2019 |

It wasn't for their own fleet, it was to force the enemy to feed them out of their own supplies.
