I wonder how far the Navy got along the "low intensity peacekeeping role" planning before realizing they had just invented the Coast Guard.

Of course, it's just funny after seeing acceptance trials first hand and all the hand waving that goes into determining withholds.

Huh. How about that.

Independent waterjets mean you could get plenty of maneuverability by putting a large ahead on one side and a backing bell on the other (as long as you don't have a shafting casualty). Pretty sure if I ever did it unbriefed without whispering the standard command into the VDR or tried to do it with a conning officer, most captains would take the CONN from me.

Also I could have been quick on the draw for that at the end of a deployment (loving Apra harbor), but probably not the first few times I drove tbh. I think these precom crews are being taken for some of the most challenging driving the Navy does mostly trained only on simulator. Well enough for San Diego transits where the ocean doesn't do anything until you're out and clear, but sounds terrifying in fresh water. Heart goes out to the bridge team, I don't know them.

That's a big part of it yea.

We used to have a civilian captain hang out with the ships until Halifax but we stopped doing that for some reason.

Oops.

Highest that I've ever been in that I know of was sea state 9 (might have been higher, wasn't driving, didn't care) on the carrier, and waves were breaking over the flight deck and the ship was pitching really bad, which is remarkable for a carrier. I'd have hated to be on one of our escorts during that.

Strait of Magellan. The wave period was a bit shorter than the carrier so we calmly drove through them. The cruiser next to us was eating poo poo diving face first into the waves and almost rolling over if they couldn't hold course so they had to divert to an inland waterway and meet us on the other side.

Then I got a Starbucks beverage from our fake barista. Carrier life

Yeah, smooth water and she zipped right along. Any type of heavy seas and you had to claw into the matress springs of the rack above you to keep from slamming your face into it every fifteen seconds. The ship hardly pitched or rolled it just bashed you to death going up and down like a ship that was designed to be a bay ferry would do in the open swells. Thankfully we just transitted to ports and parked for a week or two before we went out again.

So apparently naval aviation has suddenly found itself in such a major budget shortfall that they're shutting down an entire carrier air wing for the next three months. No flying at all.

They're also straight up not repairing or doing maintenance on anything over a certain price point, which is going to lead to some loving amazing backlogs for a long time to come.

Apparently there are even more drastic options still on the table if needed. :munch:

Wizard sleeves for life. It will actually make you cooler rather than just let your forearms tan.

Type 3s roll way tighter, if you’re remotely a larger or athletic guy your arms probably won’t fit. I’m hardly a gym rat but it’s actually painful if I can manage to get my arms in them. loving hate rolling sleeves. Marpats on the other hand while a pain in the rear end to learn how to roll, will still fit unless you’re in Ronnie Coleman territory.

It's too bad airplanes are so slow and immobile. How could they possibly get from point A to point B?

It's about a 2 hr flight each way, one or two stops for gas unless they have a tanker, which is a distinct possibility.

They do a lot of prep and have their own C 130 I think to carry everything. There was a show on Discovery or something on their training process and gently caress that poo poo. I think they have several variations of their show they can do so maybe they just cut it back to the short and simple program?
