The IT field is flooded now with just regular people who choose it because they found it interesting; long gone are the "oh computers are weird" tropes that led to society's castoffs using it as a hiding place and weirdo club. Yeah, there's probably a decline in your stereotypical fedora wearing overweight wizard who thinks his low-end IT job gives him a license to pontificate on every topic known to man. But at the same time, the number of socially isolated (mostly) men just keeps increasing, and platforms like Twitch just become more and more of a parasocial hell.

Remember the days of Myst where you could only navigate by looking at prerendered pictures of the area? Now imagine, if you can, being able to move to, and look around from, literally any spot you want, and have the game dynamically render the scene in real time, just like real life. That future is now. That future is Star Citizen.

I dunno, I got into IT and software/game development in the late 90s, and the unhygienic weirdos were a rare sight even then. There's a higher frequency of highly introverted and eccentric people than in almost any other sector - restaurants and bars being one notable exception I know of, and that's just along one of those parameters with highly extroverted and eccentric people being common. But nasty and unhygienic types are more common in logistics, (non-physical) unskilled labor and agriculture. In IT (anecdotally, granted) the nasty types tend to be at the very lower tier of the career ladder, mostly in support and "perpetual junior developer" roles. In my experience, the stereotypical manchildren with crazy spending habits, abysmal personalities and abnormal immaturity, tend to be found in the "fluffier" roles, such as middle management, product designers and all those weird jobs that are well-paid, prestigious but in many ways devoid of actual meaning. Often they make up for lack actual skills with a kind intuitive skill at office politics and supreme bullshitting skills (due to being so full of themselves that they actually believe their own nonsense). They rarely have actual managerial responsibility but try to weasel into at any opportunity. It's like that Schrute guy in the Office. Sadly, I think the main market for "gamer girl dreams" isn't really either of these categories (although they are part of it). Rather, it's very young males with poor people skills and lack of social life. I am not convinced they've all developed into horrible people yet, and hopefully they won't all do that. Modern youth culture is harsh on both sexes, in different ways, and I think this group is one example of how the ruthless realities of the "so-me generation" manifests. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think these are all filthy basement dwelling misogynists. Many are just awkward and unattractive kids who buy a dream match and revel in the very temporary warmth.

Nah, they'll just sit on the PC version for a few years and then put it out as a part of a big re-release like they did for GTA V and are about to do for RDR2. I don't really get it, since they're the only major publisher that still dicks around with PC versions of their multi-platform releases, and only Sony and Nintendo are still committed to console exclusives.

We've had pretty different experiences I think. In the last year alone we've had to send multiple people home due to hygiene issues, to the point where their office had to be cleaned, and the air was unbreathable (which is why you track argon levels). The top level techs, who really did know their poo poo, looked like recently-thawed cavemen who wandered into the server room by mistake. That said, I will concede that none of the people I'm describing were the types to go home, get online, and be raving assholes - they mostly kept to themselves. Perhaps it's a situation where I'm conflating the two groups, since I have noticed that nobody "knows" more than your Tier 1 support tech fresh from the Best Buy Geek Squad who demands the company open ports on the firewall because a Google search, or a forum slapfight, told them to do it. Those seem to be the guys that make parts of the web insufferable.

The whole "gamer girl" bathwater debacle makes me feel disconnected from modern culture (and I am not that old, I've been working for a little less than 10 years). Even if you have mediocre social skills and not much of a social life, there are more efficient ways of getting a temporary high. Drink yourself silly, get stoned and play video games, get high on benzo or even get a high class escort. I am not saying these are smart choices; but at least you get more bang for your buck than burning cash on influencers.

I've been wondering about this, and I think it goes deeper than that. It's not only a "gamer girl" thing, or even a "gamer" thing; we're in a place now where people think they're literally steering the course of history by posting tweets, collecting likes, and DESTROYING someone in FIVE WORDS or whatever YouTube tripe hits the front page. It's entirely masturbatory, but it reveals a sick underlying desire some people have to forcibly shape the world in their image the moment they think they have the influence to do so. Even imaginary power corrupts, it seems.
