Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I loved VVitch, Apostle, and Hereditary so I could get behind "pagan horror" being the new "run it into the ground" horror fad.

Yeah, if people keep making movies as good as those three + Midsommar, make all the movies you want I don't care

I have used 41 of 300 characters allowed.
Yeah pagan horror is great, I love the mood most of them give off. I also love satan so stuff like that is a big plus for me.

Mild thematic spoilers

I like how both of Ari Aster’s movies are basically rituals that last the whole movie, but in Hereditary the pieces don’t come together until the climax, and in Midsommar you know the whole time, but aren’t really sure what the goal is or who is truly at risk. I mean, it’s all of them but they kind of make you think Chris Shat will be kept alive too.

Blackcoat's Daughter too. Was it the witch that started the paganism/witchcraft boom? It's bled into fashion, graphic design, and funky decor over the past 5 years too.

What would count as discreet? Every pagan horror I've sat through's been pretty candid about it.

are the same thing!

I'm digging the folk horror revival.

It's not like it's that oversaturated. There's a handful of movies in the early seventies and a few more in the last four years. And a few stragglers here and there in between.

Compared to a dozen slashers per year back in the day.

slashers are at least fun and usually self-aware of that fact, whereas every pagan horror movie ive seen is a lot of self-indulgent* artsy atmospheric crap that each director thinks is a new and creative spin on a genre thats anything but.

In short please take funds away from Ari Aster and give them to Rob Zombie

House whips. House 2 is a lot of fun too, but in a vastly different way (and has perhaps the single greatest subtitle pun in movie history).

First flick is great, though.

Jim Jarmusch recently released a star-studded ensemble zombie movie. That barrel has a false bottom.

Edit: actually, what subgenre hasn’t already been completely stripmined? Torture porn, zombies, jump scare demon movies, found footage, home invasion - all past the point of deconstruction. I guess we haven’t had a banner werewolf year in a long time.

From off the top of my head, any cryptid that isn't Bigfoot, and any undead that's not vampires or zombies. Disease/epidemic and/or nature run amok's still might have some life in them. For really unique stuff in the vein of Fiend without a Face or The Flesh Eaters, I don't think those are possible outside of indie anymore because no one else'd take a chance on the premise.

Movies about filmmaking that aren't high off their farts but instead are purely enthusiastic about the collaborative process about making impossible dreams realities.

We can slice this razor thin. If it crosses two subgenres, we can make new ones! Edit: coming in September: I Want My Mummy

One cult horror that’s really stuck with me is the Timo Tjahjanto segment in V/H/S/2. It’s constricted by the found footage constraint, but it quickly builds its world, makes it awfully disturbing and drops my jaw as it unravels. Great character interplay, too. I'm sure it'd break down if you tried to make it full length, but it’s rushed in the vignette format and could have had more time to play with itself, as it were.

I like The Sacrament, too, to plug Ti West again, but I'm completely fascinated by Jim Jones.
