Seriously though, at what point does CIG have to come right out and say "OK nerds, we're sorry (not sorry), we tried our best (didn't really) but not even the combined skills of Chris Roberts and Eric Kieron Davis could make this piece of crap engine poo poo out what we wanted it to do..."

I guess what I'm asking is, given all the evidence now in front of them, how can the Citizens be so monumentally stupid that they can't see how absolutely doomed this project is?

Looking at the funding stats, it is their second strongest year so far. Chris also got their "SQ42 marketing only" $50m injection, which is really "only for marketing SQ42" and nothing else. Don't think money is a near term issue for CIG. After all these years finally putting a working game together out of the proof-of-concept mess they have is still the actual problem.

I’d be at least a little skeptical with anything CIG self-reports.

They self-reported Chris and Sandi were “just friends” from 2012-2015.

They self-reported Squadron was releasing in 2014, 2015, 2016, etc.

They self-reported custom HOTASes releasing next April (in 2015), the Stanton system arriving in full by December 2016 (with all mechanics), and Star Marine in “weeks not months” with stealth tech and “the best playable soldiers on the simulated battlefield” back in 2015, among other things. They self-reported “Star Citizen in an epic first person experience spanning hundreds of star systems...” back when they didn’t even have a fraction of one yet. And so on.

I don’t assume their numbers are entirely fictional, just can’t believe it’s 100% accurate either. The company is lead by a pathological family who lie even when they have nothing obvious to gain from it. Discount future disclosures accordingly.

This seems quite outdated, though, it has a timestamp of 3 months ago and talks about patch 1.05, which is like 2015.

Not to say that there aren't some fanatics that go overboard with stuff like "Braben lied forever" and "It's a scam, because they didn't fulfill 100 % of what they promised, but only 95 %". The tracker is billed as a good faith attempt to track CIG's promises. As a result, it's literally taking every one of CIG's promises at face value and merging them into what would be considered a 100% completed project.

That's where I lose track of things. Things CIG said off the cuff, whether in print or verbally, are on there. But they were just that - things they just "said" with no idea how to implement, or even if they could be implemented. That makes them subject to constant change, revision, etc. If CIG obviously exaggerates, through malice or simple ignorance, and any reasonable person would conclude it was an exaggeration, is it considered good faith to put it on the tracker? Or are we being too literal?

I'd have split it into two distinct sections. Everything not implemented and stagnant I'd have put in one section (unimplemented promises) and I'd probably leave the rest exactly as it is.

The other confusing part is the difference between "completed" and "broken." So far, everything they "completed" is fundamentally broken. So the difference is pretty grey.

I'm not having a go at the tracker, I really do think it's fine as is and it tells the story. But the subdivisions sometimes throw me off for the above reasons.

Well, there are two caveats to this tracker. First, it's mostly copied from politician fact-checker, where it's usually come-and-go functionality, just for single elections and then nobody cares. Nobody prepared it deeply for ten years plus project mess. And the second is, while it has a decent FAQ about its approach ("If CIG obviously exaggerates, through malice or simple ignorance, and any reasonable person would conclude it was an exaggeration, is it considered good faith to put it on the tracker?"), in the end much of the stuff is subjective. That said, most of the stuff on the tracker is such that someone from CIG said "we WILL have it" and most of the stuff "we might have it, would be nice" is ignored.

This. I have just assumed that anything self reported is cast in the best possible light for their own benefit and possibly outright fudged just a little. Like refunded amounts not subtracted from the total. The "number of backers" includes everyone who's ever visited the website and left an email address, including "free-fly" weekenders who've never dropped a dime into the project. Nor was it reduced when people requested refunds. Funding total includes literally every bit of revenue like tax-refunds and private investor money, not just ship sales.

Yeah, I mean even in that recent RedBull advertorial Level Documentary Chris was claiming millions of users when Forbes said a million a change.

I don’t believe, so long as they are sharing data, that they’ll ever disclose anything that might suggest markedly declining interest / demand. Just look at 2017, which was a catastrophic disaster from every perceivable angle, yet according to the tracker it was just another rock solid year like the rest. Why not?

If Chris, Erin, Sandi and Ortwin pooled their consciences, they still couldn’t afford a pang of guilt. They’re bad people and it pays well so why mess with a winning formula?

What I've consistently heard is that he's as morally bankrupt as the rest of them, but he's also competent. So the weight of the others' expectations falls heavily on his shoulders.

I feel like I have been dealing with this type of thing atlot at work, heaps of engineers want to drag things into detail ... See these things have been done but they are not being used, this is works but but doesn't because X and made lots of progress... I think you are missing the complexity.

So can we summarise and say we have more excuses than completed tasks? I's it finished or not ? Dose it matter why it's not done ?

Ok let's step back what's working right now, what's the number we can all defend comfortably ... 7% ? So 1% per annumm? That's hard to sugar coat, you are going to need more sugar than the thing your coating.

There is some human desire to overstate progress as soon lots of time and effort has been spent on something. Its hard to accept 7% is the number let's face facts this is were we are we need a new plan to finish. Then this narrative it's all about to pop into place all the tasks are 90% done progress is about to be a whirlwind!! Pipelines Anyone ?

I used to believe Erin would bring the discipline and constraints needed to keep Chris’s worst excesses in check. Boy was that stupid. I mean, maybe he’s done a little of it, but belatedly and ineffectually. He was a Lego-game re-skinner working on 6 month release cycles for years before this, so maybe it’s not surprising he’s not lived up to expectations.

He’s not all bad. Abandoning Gamescom was seemingly an Erin call. He finally conceded the obvious, that it was a waste of developer time to spend weeks crafting one-time use demos for 2+ shows a year. Perhaps Erin also deserves the credit for finally getting Roadmaps out, too. (Though public shaming of their inability to hit release dates may have just forced Chris to finally give in to them. Who knows?)

Even so, Erin’s track record sucks and like Chris, he never owns up to missed targets. He told Bored last year they aimed for Salvage and Server meshing by 3.4, if memory serves — yet we’re at 3.6 and neither are in sight.

He hyped up Land Claims with Chris and Haddock in 2017, as if they were just around the corner. Even got giddy imaging the gold rush to secure prime real estate and the potential for players to flip real estate to future fortunes. Bullcrap then and bullcrap now. He also said early this year that this year’s Roadmaps were very achievable, unlike last year’s, which in hindsight he admitted were too ambitious. Having lowered their aim, they’re still missing targets every quarterly release. That reflects more poorly on him than on Chris, IMO.
