Why doesn't WWE just buy a few coaches and drive the wrestlers to their events?

SyntheticPolygon

They save more money by having the Talent make their own way and then make more money from starting a show about the Talent travelling to events.

NXT does for shows outside of Florida.

WWE in European does. Well the third party promoter does at least.

Microtransactions.

I'm serious. It's the same principle. Ditto with casinos giving you fun money tickets and chips instead of coins and cash.

You pay people more per check, so they feel like they're making a lot of money, and you obfuscate how much they're actually making by forcing them to book their own road poo poo and paying for it themselves.

When they start to notice that it costs a lot, you encourage them to double up in cars and hotel rooms, so now those who want to travel alone just aren't being frugal enough, and if they'd just have worked harder and saved their money and holy poo poo we're super not talking about how much wrestlers net anymore because gently caress you, you should've worked harder. Look over there!

Reminds me of the old Steve Albini piece about how you can be part of a _successful_ music act and still end up more screwed than you would've been if you just got a job in retail.

I haven't watched a ton of Leahy but she probably deals with so many pro athletes that talking about unions and CBAs are common and the idea of "its hard to arrange transportation for 30 people after a show" was such a comically false excuse that she really was shocked by this.

Well Pro Wrestling is the only sport that behaves the way it does. Now on the indies where you have actual independent contractors who are going from various place to place it makes sense for them to handle their own transportation for the most part. But WWE has no such excuse. New Japan handles transportation for their talent on tours as well as lodging. I wonder what AEW is going to handle all this.

I will say with WWE going higher profile with Fox they are going to have a ton of more scrutiny over things just like in this interview. The average sports fan knows about CBAs, player unions and how the sports business is ran today. Hell a good part of any sports reporting shows are talking about this on a daily basis. With Fox wanting WWE to be presented as a real sport they are going to be held to higher standards than their carny rear end is used to.

I am sure Vince threw a fit when he saw this.

Yeah, and like that's thing. If Bayley is sitting down in the same seat that NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, UFC, boxing, Olympic, whatever athletes are then the expectation will be that yeah, there's a lot of "the tough road to get here and all the sacrifices it took" to her story but now that she's at the top she's got SOME comfort like they all do. The reality that she's driving her own rental car and worried about running out of gas to get to the show? That probably genuinely blew Leahy's mind as a sports reporter/interviewer.

I don't know if it will be a thing with WWE now that they're on Fox, though. They've had their deal with ESPN for years now and it seems to have barely affected them negatively. ESPN seems fine ignoring this stuff and they have the same perspective. This case is probably just one person being genuinely shocked and no higher ups picking through her random FS1 show because they weren't looking for it.
