I vaguely remember a statistic that American tank crews had significantly higher survival rates when their tank was knocked out than other nations because they were the only ones to issue proper helmets.

There's also the development of wet storage. Most tanks in the early days stored a lot of ammo near the gun, often directly above or to the sides. Unfortunately, this ammo was just stored as-is and so any unlucky hit would set the whole thing off and spell near-certain death for the crew. One of the Sherman models was the first (I believe) to use wet storage. While it reduced the ammo capacity slightly, it also all but eliminated ammo fires and explosions. This was a contributing factor to Shermans being more survivable than other tanks in the event of being knocked out

This was a contributing factor to Shermans being more survivable than other tanks in the event of being knocked out For those that don't know and had to look up 'wet storage' like me, that means that the ammo is stored surrounded by containers of water and antifreeze so, in the event of a shell puncturing the tank, the water/antifreeze mix would spill over the ammo and prevent it from igniting.

did the greek phalanx cover their loins? I just remember that one bit from Thucydides where he describes the aftermath of a battle, people screaming lying on the floor, with their junk cut off from the spears.
