By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living." - FDR, 1933. The King County Labor Council fought a head tax on big business, endorsed the same mayoral candidate as the Downtown Seattle Association and the Chamber of Commerce, and fought for a contract that overturned a bunch of police reforms designed to hold pigs accountable, and get the city out from under a constant decree. Sometimes, the CHUD is coming from inside the union.

Subjunctive posted:I can see racism making it harder to create a socialist state, but I would be pretty surprised to discover that socialist states didn’t have racism. Racism is a tool used to attack socialism. Socialist states can be and often are still institutionally racist, but even within those states, there is an even more insidious racism that is used to undermine them. The threat of "the other" is what is used to hack away at the social safety net in modern social democracies. "black people abusing food stamps to buy cigarettes" is used to make racist white people vote away their own.

On one hand these people are often scammers with houses or whatever, but on the other hand capitalism fucks people into really poo poo situations so I understand it. Many many years ago an old upper-middle class republican boomer told me that he never gives money to panhandlers cause most of them actually own homes at the [new jersey] shore and come into center city Philadelphia to beg For money in the off-season. I was much younger and still trying to understand what my political worldview was but it was the first time I independently thought “is this what conservatives think cause that’s the dumbest loving thing I’ve ever heard” One suggestion I’ve heard if you don’t want to give money is give things such as I’ve heard the #1 requested cloth g item at shelters is socks so go to TJ Max and buy a cheap 10 pack of socks and keep them in your car.
