In this case though there's added confusion as it's totally fine to refer to party members as "Democrats" or "a Democrat". It's not hard to see how the term "the Democrat party" could be used as short-hand in good faith that does not apply to ethnic slurs. It sucks that right-wingers are using the term derogatively, but frankly I think the vast majority of non-online people wouldn't be aware of that.

As a non-US person living here now I've unknowingly fallen into this myself and hopefully I'm not a secret Republican. It seems like there's much better ways to identify Republicans anyway, like asking whether racism still exists in the USA.

To bring it back to the original point, obviously "Ocasio-Cortez" is correct and "Ocasio" is just wrong. Someone not getting hyphenated names is pretty egregious.

If it's not an intentional slur, it's at least a shibboleth, meaning it identifies someone as a member of a certain group. In the case of "Democrat" as an adjective, it means someone is either ignorant or a Republican. Just like most uses of "USA" indicate that someone is not American. There are many ways in which people can give away something about themselves through the ways they express themselves. That's all this is about for me.

My peeps at Climate Alliance, VA DSA, etc made me have a time out and take a breather. But here we are, back in action! 2019 is an important year folks. VA can kill Right to Work and start enacting legislation that helps VA citizens and enable our teachers to strike etc. If you can spare anything to some of the candidates in the VA elections that can potentially unseat chuds, then please do so. There are so many stupid things about this tweet but the first thing that jumped out at me is that he’s comparing action heroes to superheroes, as if today’s action hero actors aren’t twice as big as those in the 80s (The Rock, John Cena, etc.)

It’s like anyone from that family ever said or did anything genuine, they’d burst into flames.

To bring it back to the original point, obviously "Ocasio-Cortez" is correct and "Ocasio" is just wrong. Someone not getting hyphenated names is pretty egregious.

edit: Democrat Dog

My first post on this topic was correcting someone that AOC's name is Ocasio-Cortez and not Cortez, that this could have been an honest mistake but is also the language that Trump uses to disparage people, much like him repeatedly using the name "Democrat Party." In Trump's case he 100% for sure knows that it's incorrect (like I think he even tweeted it out) but he does it anyway, because he's a loving rear end in a top hat and a piece of poo poo and he's only doing it explicitly to disparage people.

This was followed by some people writing basically "lol who cares it doesn't matter."

It does matter because of Trump and other Republican assholes who explicitly use the term "Democrat Party" to (1) insult people and (2) send a message to like-minded individuals that they are on their side. It's not a racial slur, and it's not "as bad" as a racial slur, but that really doesn't matter because it's irrelevant.

I only brought up that particular racial slur because it's one of those words that could be used innocently but if you use it around me I'm going to (politely but firmly) ask you to stop, and how you handle that request is going to tell me whether you're a real piece of poo poo or just someone who didn't know better. And if you're the latter then we're cool, it's a mistake and people make mistakes.

Which isn't really too different from "Democrat Party" despite the fact that one is a racial slur and the other one isn't. Members of the Democratic Party have probably asked Trump and his base to stop, and their response is "lol who cares it doesn't matter and also gently caress you," which tells us that they are real pieces of poo poo.

I also said that it's probably not uncommon to think "Democrat Party" is the correct usage, especially now that media outlets are straight up printing and reading Trump's tweets word-for-word and so that might be the only exposure to the term that they get. Those people might go on and say "Democrat Party" because that's what they've heard, and if you inform them that it's incorrect and they change their tune then they're cool, but if they go on and keep repeating it then the only thing it can possibly mean is that they are assholes.

Paradoxish posted:

Honestly, this is all tied up into the weird way that white people treat accusations of racism.

There's this idea that being racist is just who you are and it's this intrinsic part of your character that you can never change. Calling someone a racist is like calling someone ugly; it's telling them that there is a deep flaw in their character that's always been there and always will be there. It's a loving cop out that frees people from actually taking action. "I'm not a racist because I'm not a bad person, therefore I don't have to do anything."

Ralph Northam can't explain his actions because white people will almost never admit that they did racist poo poo because they actually believed or believe racist things.

That said I feel like the obvious thing that's not stated is people have to recognize their own flaws (most people are genuinely not introspective enough to do this on their own) and finally want to change which they have no real reason to do as our white supremacist society rewards them regardless
