"Normal maps are cheating" I have no reason to doubt croberts would be that dense, but can you provide a source/quote on that for our enjoyment?

Then mod it to always crit and to penetrate doors (and other cover) and watch arrows send enemy ragdolls flying across the room and get nailed to the opposite wall without anyone hearing you shoot. Meanwhile if you like archery and NOT stealth, I would recommend the Lenz, which launches sticks of dynamite that freeze enemies before exploding.

Bronze Fonz posted:"Normal maps are cheating" 2016: atxsperg posted:another tidbit. Select bits from a resignation letter: quote:When I started here, I was astounded to learn that no one was able to tell me the budget for character assets. People seemed to be operating under the mantra “It’s CryEngine, the budget is irrelevant” This attitude for game art production is suicide in a bottle. This apparently is still a difficult question to answer. In the absence of budget, Roberts judges all game assets against his own imagination or an asset in another game. Back to 2016: quote:normals maps are spoken of in soft whispers, if croberts hears that they are used the asset immediately gets put into the redo pile, its no longer up to standards. quote:someone once told him normal maps are how you cheat showing detail without using real geometry. there is no cheating in the crisverse. Virtual Captain posted:2016: This is... breathtakingly stupid. You need budgets to handle your average target consumer's machine. The higher the requirements, the fewer the people that can buy it. And if you can use a normal map to save on geometry, why the hell not? Why would you throw in extra geometry, extra shader calculations, slowing down the machine, if the user is never going to notice the details? croberts reeks of 'idea man' that plagues the industry. People need to get whatever funding they can get back. This thing is loving vaporware. Explosionface posted:Yeah, it's like a less complicated video game form of Star Fleet Battle Manual Oh! The funny thing about "normal maps are cheating, you need real geometry" is that normal maps are generated by producing a high detail model with the geometry Croberts demands, and then projecting the geometry onto a low poly model that can be efficiently used in a game as a set of instructions on how to deform textures. So Croberts is basically yelling at the artists for taking the extra step of making the game optimized instead of just forcing the players to render redundantly detailed models.

Cool thing is you can also paint normal maps onto a flat surface for things like bolts, vents, scratches and whatnot in height-map style, then convert them into tangent space normal maps through a whole variety of programs. Essentially, croberts is a dumb dumb and should let his artists make proper game art instead of 'his vision' or whatever.

Also, no matter how detailed the model is it still needs a normal map for the lighting and shaders to work. (Just way worse since the poly count is higher than it needs to be.)

What are you even paying an artist for if they aren't creating a million tiny bumps on a model that nobody's ever going to look at or care about by hand for that perfect hand-crafted look? This is a high-class game you've gotta make this poo poo bespoke, not just slap on a texture that looks like bumps like a pleb.

I gotta think Chris finally took a hint about normal maps; but they still take 6months-to-6years to implement a basic bitch 'ok this ship can fly and shoot guns but nothing else' asset into the executable so I dunno lol

Calling stuff like normal maps "cheating" is inherently stupid because all modern game engines are basically just a large collection of smoke-and-mirrors tricks. Like you could literally list off the features added with each iteration of DirectX and they'd all be cheats by Roberts' definition. Until all lighting is fully ray traced and all geometry is calculated down to the molecular level, you're "cheating" to make things appear the way they do.

It's almost like he's obstructing things on purpose so they never have to release a game. He's always gotta be tightening up the graphics on level 2.

Good job, with this post you have just caused Star Citizen to be delayed for another 10 years while Chris tries to make the junior developers rewrite the engine to work directly against the hardware without any abstraction layers or APIs whatsoever.
