So some actual nerdy poo poo I've been into for a few years now are shorthand, alternative alphabets, and constructed languages. I like taking notes by hand sometimes, got curious if someone had made a faster cursive, and ended up down a whole linguistic rabbit hole.

I can't remember if any of these have been mentioned ITT yet. I've only noticed natural languages so far. It struck me that this stuff might be fitting for the arcane works going on in here.

So you have your real life magic alphabets for talking to angels, summoning demons, casting hexes etc., like Theban, the witch's alphabet:

Attempted phonetic English alphabets like Shavian and its cousin Quikscript:

Alphabets made up from scratch for people who didn't have one yet. Some Native Canadians have funky geometric alphabets now:

and shorthands like Pitman and Gregg for writing fast before they had voice recorders. Even if it's archaic, I think it looks cool as hell and/or like some kind of deranged scribble language.

Also there are like a trillion and a half constructed fictional languages like Klingon and Elvish and stuff, but I think sticking to the real stuff is more approppriate for documenting the failures of humanity in our holy book.

we found a shorthand dictionary at a garage sale a while back that looks just like those scribbles

i refuse to believe it's usable or even legible, as two completely unrelated words like say "hospital" and "megaphone" look basically exactly the same to me

like, there's only so many combinations of quick strokes like that they can do right?

Flavius Aetass

i mean look at this

no loving way are people distinguishing between these thousands of impossibly similar symbols, either when writing or reading

Yeah I gave up on learning Gregg proper because
1. You tell a lot of letters apart by how long they are and my penmanship just isn't good enough.
2. You very often don't write entire words but only like the first three syllables, or the first two and last two syllables. And you're not supposed to wing it. There are official spellings and abbreviations like you saw in that dictionary.

I've been trying to make up my own ghetto version though that's less ambiguous and slower b/c I don't need to be a 19th century court reporter.

i can write pretty quickly with extremely sloppy half cursive, as in, just print letters but blurred together randomly. basically only i can read it but i can read it perfectly so

My favorite version of shorthand is where you just write in normal English while waving a gun around at people screaming at them to slow down

I am going to leave it online for as long as I have a free trial of shopify, which is two weeks. After that it costs $30 a month for the service of keeping the shop up and running, and I am making like $4 or $5 on average from each item sold (though some less), and I don't imagine that I will have consistent sales of 6 or 7 things every month, and even then I would just be breaking even

Let's see, youve got the teutonic cross and double eagle, and then planetary symbols under the sun and moon... Is this esoteric text from eastern Germany, circa the 16th century?

This is Rosicrucian symbology :) The iron cross is used here, but I've seen other versions of this image with other crosses.

A dumb question: are the Rosicrucians like other esoterics, like if I were a Rosicrucian would this image have a clear meaning to me?

I don't know but I think so. As far as I can tell the whole thing about being a rosecrucian and leveling up in their ranks is that you have to read a bunch of literature and go to readings and discussion groups. I'm pretty sure the alchemical library is run by them and when I was there doing some research they invited me to some readings and "something that is more like a religious service" but I didn't go. They have been sending me invites to their seminars by post for years, which is weird because I don't know how they got my address
