Relevance? Even if you argue that the reliability problems of BVR missiles back then is no longer an issue now, you still have to handle the variety of issues a peer conflict can bring; plus the fact that the US has not fought a peer conflict in about the same amount of time! And the people closest to being America's "peers" are getting closer by the day.

Dr. Taber continues being awesome. Great thread, well worth the read.

How big is the "small farm" movement though? From what I can tell the whole thing is largely a rebranding effort where existing farming operations give themselves a facelift, change up the varieties of crops (but not types) they farm to those you can't find in stores, and charge a feel-good premium.

It seems weird to call it a "movement", but a lot of small farms still exist. Some absurd ratio exists for farm ownership, like 10% of farmers owning 90% of the land, which means all those 90% still have small farms.

With the effects of global warming making more and more of Alaska less of a hostile and formidable environment I can see the state turning into the “last free frontier” that the more out there types move to.

Sadly that’s a far more long term thing. In the short term, global warming means that sea ice goes out earlier, increasing erosion and forcing villages to move away from the shoreline and severely stressing animals that depend on it (upon which villages rely for subsistence), increases storm surges that bring salt water hundreds of miles inland on the tundra, and melts the permafrost layers that prevent the tundra from becoming massive swamps, lakes, or simply slipping below the sea (while also releasing additional trapped greenhouse gasses). Some parts of the state might become more temperate, but the vast region of coastal tundra are hosed.

You can google a bunch of examples, but the real insidiousness is that a few of the questions were straight up ambiguous and had two ways to answer, so the proctor could rule your answer incorrect regardless of what you answered.

Same.

Recently had someone citing that immigrants in detention camps have the right to leave but then they must return home. Ergo they choose to stay there.

Turns out this is technically correct (the worst kind of correct) but the right to return first requires that ICE take them before a judge, where they need to demonstrate that they have the financial means to return (afford a plane trip or so) and the judge then must approve it.

There's no pressure at all on ICE to hurry this process and if the person entered the country illegally then it all goes out the window anyway.

This is what happened during the forced deportation phase in Germany.

Probably related to tweets she’s gotten or smear poo poo. I think she should lose but I don’t think she’s being preemptively weird or whatever. Accusing a young woman in the public eye of being a secret mooslim/man/science project is pretty common across the board and it’s not uncommon for chan psychos to go after young women on the right even when they’re ostensibly on the same “side”. Like, for all that the GOP is poo poo and everyone who runs with them is poo poo, I don’t doubt that keyboard warriors more disinhibited and less stable than us on both sides of the aisle are already deepfaking her and trying to hack her accounts, and that’s grotesque.
