I bounced off the game at that point a couple of times, but trust me when I say that the game gets exponentially better during those quests you now have in front of you.

I was thoroughly "meh" on the story and characters and didn't really believe it when people told me how much better it gets, but once I finally got past that original 2.0 MSQ I was glued to the screen and didn't stop. It's night and day.

Basically, you're already past the bad part of the game and boosting now would just rob you of the part where it actually gets really good.

I decided to get back into this game after a few years, and I have a level 30 Marauder that I just finished the Warrior quest line for today. I don't know why I picked a tank class, tanking gives me a bit of anxiety. Fortunately there was some tutorial quest line I was in the middle of that taught me the basics of my rotation and made me understand tanking better.

I'm trying to figure out if I should 1) Keep going on this class/job, 2) Keep this character and start a ranged DPS with an easy rotation, something I'm more comfortable with, 3) Roll a new character.

I'm leaning toward maybe 2, if there's a fast way to level. Everyone keeps saying that you gotta slog through the 100 story quests to get to the good content. I'm turning in Skeletons in Her Closet right now, which looks like it's the 90th quest, so am I close to the first expansion's content? https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Seventh_Umbral_Era_Quests

You are a long ways off. The 100 quests thing is how many quests there are between the end of ARR and the start of the first expansion. You'll be level 50 when you're close to the end of ARR.

Most roulettes give them for their daily bonus if you're on a level 80 character. Max level dungeons always drop them, as do the raids or ex trials. Grouping any of the max level content with a first timer gives you a bonus to tomestones instead of exp. Maps and A+ hunts do I believe as well.

Technically you'd be getting incremental gear upgrades (for lvl 50 characters) during those quests but most people just buy the tomestone ironworks gear, so then it becomes desynth or vendor fodder, since ironworks is basically the best lvl 50 gear other than coil gear.

It's also why I liked most of Shadowbringers, it felt like almost a whole expansion of one of those side-stories while the main plot's going on somewhere else, and I don't think it's a coincidence that I switched off the moment the main story barged back in, even if it came with some neat ideas I'd like as an isolated experience.

It's probably a taste thing. I find it interesting that you compared Handsome Jack and Emet Selch because they are different executions on the same archetype/concept. The biggest difference between the two is how the rest of the story/game mechanics support them and their personalities. FFXIV's version IMO has the better story/gameplay support than Handsome Jack because there are concrete reasons why no one can stop Emet having a long melodramatic monologue after he shoots the Exarch. The only person capable of doing anything more than a momentary nuisance to Emet is currently kneeling on the floor heaving up marble-fied blood. Meanwhile in Handsome Jack's 'moment of triumph' he basically gets away with shock value and 'wham bam everything's bad man' suddenness. Also the existence of Borderland's 'New U' systems draws a pretty immersion-breaking line between gameplay and story in those games since, y'know, why are the people you're playing as the only ones who get to respawn?

Personality wise it's a matter of taste. One's a petty rear end in a top hat with a foul mouth and the other's a smarmy bastard with an erudite sense of superiority. One has a wide range of emotion and shows all of it and the other is calm, collected and casually displays a degree of power beyond yours. Both are good personalities for antagonists but for different reasons.

So I created a character on Goblin, which at the time was a preferred server and had the Road to 70 buff. This last patch removed Goblin as the preferred server but kept the Road to 70, and during this period I levelled a character up to 30. This was in the past few days and I haven't received a 15 day playtime bonus yet, so is it safe to assume the 15 bonus days is for levelling up to 30 while the server is preferred and not any time after?

I actually don't like Handsome Jack, but he's the most known figure that does well-ish what I think FFXIV does badly. You're never in an equal matchup with Jack and you always know that, but you still find ways to hurt him. That's not just really satisfying and a way to equalize things, that's also a useful way to refresh the experience because the dynamic keeps changing. Meanwhile Emet's on top and unflappable the whole time, and that only changes when he dies.

I could also mention John from The Secret World, who's similarly untouchable but has character traits that don't make him feel invincible, and much better reactions from other characters; just because they can't kill him, doesn't mean they won't try to shut him up. But a lot less people have played TSW, much less to the point where John turns up.

Emet literally is helping you out for most of the expansion. He isn't 'on top.' He is a genuine ally who is working to try to help you and only betrays you when it becomes clear you couldn't actually succeed at what he considered a victory so he went back to his plan B, but was genuinely regretful that he had to. You're not *trying* to hurt him because until the very end he's legitimately working with you.

The entire point is that he *isn't* just a cackling villain who wants to hurt you. In comparison Handsome Jack is entirely antagonistic and out to gently caress with you.

Camouflage/bow shock for big trash pulls, use No Mercy alongside Bow Shock/Sonic Break with your Gnashing Fang/Continuation combo (once you get continuation) to poo poo out damage once per minute, Danger Zone will be in this buff half the time and out of of the other half, just keep it on cooldown. Don't forget Arm's Length for big trash pulls, it'll save your rear end. You have a two-step AOE combo that gives you a cartridge that you can use later on to 'finish' the combo with Fated Circle. Superbolide immediately when you pull bosses to scare the poo poo out of your pubbie healers. Reprisal/Heart of Stone are more situational, you can use Reprisal if you see a big AoE coming from a boss or something to help the healers, Heart of Stone is useful on yourself if you remember it but it's probably best to make a macro to help target the other tank or the healer with it.

Your combo steps last a long time, so you can get up to two cartridges, get 2/3rds of the way through your basic combo, then pop No Mercy, and have plenty of time to run through your entire Gnashing Fang combo, then still finish the basic combo to refill your cartridge you just spent, spend all your cartridges on Burst Strike, then Blood Fest for two more Burst Strikes.

Cheapest for exp? Whatever's double digits or less on the market board. Best? Whatever's cheap and has your class' stats at or near your level. I usually make something that only takes two or three inventory slots. I did Ishgardian Muffins all the way through Stormblood because they were the lowest effort item to gather items for and HQ past 50; bought the flour from a vendor and had my retainer farm the milk.

Okay this might be the snag.

I literally never, for a single second, bought him as anything other than a villain. Including when he brought Y'shtola back. He had more villain flags on him than most of the villain cast of Dissidia, and the only person claiming he wasn't one was Emet himself, whose perspective I obviously can't trust about this.
