AFAIK the virus has a workhorse reputation because it has very versatile oscillators, solid filters and FX, and boasts above average polyphony and multitimbrality in an attractively knobby package. DSP technology has come a long way and there are few secrets of the architecture left unrevealed, so I don't think they should have too hard of a time giving it a run for its money.

Lots of people do want a new Virus, but when you can have FPGA oscillators with real analog filters, why not use that? Also, the reason the Virus was a godsend in the 00s was simply because you got a lot of polyphony, 16-part multitimbrality and effects per multitimbral part; since a lot of people were keeping everything in MIDI and recorded the main outs, that was a necessity.

In addition to this, TI was novel as a concept at the time too, and the LFO possibilities were incredible. It was basically the hardware version of Massive for the longest time.

I'm kind of out of the loop when it comes to "synth-adjacent" equipment these days, are there any mixers out there that are designed with synths (or really, just a mess of line-level signals) in mind? I have access to a shitload of traditional mixers at work but I'd love something small to just basically route signals and do some level adjustment on the fly. I can definitely find something from the big mixer brands, I'm sure, but I'm curious if there's anything out there from synth makers that might have flown under my radar or that does something cool/unique.

The circuit is a better desert island synth tho for obvious reasons

What's this now?

Edit: I got the TB-3 a month ago for almost nothing and it's okay. I haven't gotten those 303 goose bumps out of it that some VSTs can do and the other sounds haven't made their way into my music yet. I haven't really given it a shot yet I guess. It's a very specific instrument.

I am looking at a Circuit tho, simply because I want a simple sequencer that can do beats as I try and get a live set up going. Seems to do that and a little more and the latest updates let you upload your own samples which is keen. The other option would be a TR8S or a Digitakt but thats more than I want to spend.

It's not going anywhere. I do have an older VST that controls a lot of those internals already, but it seems like that guy found a way to double up and beyond some of the limitations. I'm not certain how he's sending all that data back and forth. Hopefully someone puts out a newer VST.

I do mean something like that! Probably not that specifically since I'm not really in the Roland ecosystem so it's a bit light on inputs, but yeah I'm generally curious if there's any more "performance" oriented mixers that have come out recently, or anything that isn't your bog standard, general-purpose pro-audio mixer. The Keith McMillen K-Mix is another example of what I'm thinking of. It's possible not much new gear like that is out, since it's a niche market that's a subset of another niche market, but I figured I'd ask. Always looking for new toys that do fun stuff with synths, and I am (was) a live mixing engineer by trade so I already kind of treat mixers like weird silent instruments.

fake edit: I'm also asking in part because I could have sworn I saw some cool mixer thing that was specifically designed for synths, that had a limited degree of midi "sequencing" for effects, sends, mutes, etc. but now I can't find any evidence it exists. It's possible I dreamt it.

From the DJ thread...

skull mask mcgee posted:

A lot of recording mixers have an aux mix function which allow you to send a separate mix to headphones and/or a pair of monitors. So for the channel(s) you want to hear in headphones you just turn up their respective send pots. Allen & Heath mixers also have a headphone solo button for each channel which operates about how you would be used to. Even their cheapest recording mixer has that functionality which definitely comes in handy.
As for the specific routing, I would connect the headphone out of the Denon into the tape-in of my mixer and assign that to the aux mix. If you're planning on routing the Denon into the mixer for the main mix then you'd plug that into a separate channel.
There are also headphone mixers and switches you may want to look into so you won't have to sacrifice an input on your mixer. In any case, most non-DJ mixers are really flexible with their routing, so you should be able to find something that'll do what you want.
Checking out the mixer he helped design might offer some insight :v:

On a completely unrelated note, I have "finished" my first song and I'd be interested to hear feedback on it. Composition feedback is welcome, but I'm especially interested in hearing any synth technique feedback. I'm sure there's some newbie mistakes in here somewhere, which I'd love to correct, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. This was composed and recorded entirely on the Deluge, I just transcoded it from WAV to OGG on my PC. It's mixed a little quiet, so watch out for that. https://www.smokingonabike.com/music/track19d.ogg

Good stuff, subscribed them all. Here’s a few that most are probably familiar with but let’s get them out of the way.

Look Mum No Computer. Mostly centered around crazy DYI stuff but there’s a lot of more general interest synth stuff and nice song performances too. Probably best known for the furby organ and 100osc synth projects. His way of presenting stuff is not everyone’s cup of tea but I think it adds to the charm and it definitely stands out from the drier stuff out there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28sf60EVcqg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoJvgGT1njk
Hainbach. Features a lot of somewhat more esoteric ways of creating electronic music. Analog tape, lab equipment and so on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8od1a1mySU
Loopop. Synth overviews and tutorials so not terribly exciting but still a great resource for feeding your GAS. There’s less time spent in listening oscillator waveforms and filter sweeps than in Sonic Labs videos which is a huge plus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0N6kr6H6_Q
Ricky Tinez. Mostly jams with small, mobile setups but there’s always good overviews of how they are constructed.

He also does mention production work that he's not able to discuss due to NDA. Maybe commercial work or he's providing ghost production for artists.

The deliver style is definitely not my type (I'm more a dry humor Hainbach video type) but he does do a good job showing how to make music out of often really simple ideas and found sounds. And his paid placement videos can be rather eye-rolling (Hey guys, today I'm using Skittles to write a song!) but he's gotta eat so I can't begrudge that sort of thing too much.

For a synth-adjacent channel there's Knobs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiMgd_a1O7k (LGT sample video) who does demos of effects pedals (mostly) and has been incorporating synths into his later stuff. I actually met him by accident* and by all accounts he seemed to be a pretty chill guy.

*note to self, if you're at a music event and you crack a joke about a channel with a faceless host, make sure one of the people there isn't said host. Or if you do make it a good-natured joke and they might introduce themselves.
