yeah, they had running licensing costs on it (renting the bands), so not too surprising they ended up dropping it. had they dragged it into the wearable era it would potentially have been a pretty sweet edge to have though, some baseline phone-less functionality.

i guess this is the default google thread or close enoughquote:You are getting this email because you sync items between Google Photos and Google Drive. it does? when I first saw the subject line I assumed something was closing down this is presumably just a step towards that happening

i never saw the use case for it. the filenames were gibberish so you couldnt search them except by date and if youre working with a handful of photos then the actual photos interface was better for doing whatever you were trying to do. i thought maybe getting rid of it was for lock in but nope you can just download your entire photo archive through your google account at any time or even schedule dumps if you want to back up your photos off google for some reason their reasoning of "reducing confusion" actually does hold water because once you opted into merging the two you had this photos folder that would permanently destroy your pictures if you worked in it except deleting the whole folder did not sync but there was no indication that was the case. so there was just this toxic folder that sat there waiting for you to gently caress up

yah legit no clue why I might care except if I paid google for space. I just use it as a free extra backup. I assume that's the reason for consolidating, so people dont get 5gb free on photos and 5gb free on drive (or whatever the limits are for a basic free account idgaf) a combined 5gb (or whatever) forever

But they they busted that anyway.

i dont normally have the "announcement of google thing being shutdown is the first time ive heard of it" thing happen to me but it did on this one: Google shuts down its blog management tool just 10 months after launchquote:Late last year, Google launched a blog management tool named 'Blog Compass.' It could connect to sites running either WordPress or Blogger, and provided the owner with insights into trending topics and a centralized dashboard for analytics/comments. However, it's time to dig another grave in the Google Graveyard, because Compass is now dead. lmao e: oh it was india only

LTE was the same when it came out. Android shitphones were quick to implement garbage radio chipsets that killed battery life, matured a year or two later and became ubiquitous. Hopefully the low frequency bands that are coming online eventually are much less poo poo than mmwave
