vince has always unified the business at every turn, forcefully mashing all the working parts into a nightmare From hell; a horror that is both unsustainable and apparently completely sustainable in one form or another

Listening to the stories of the Territories Days makes me both sad I missed them and yet glad they are gone. Did Vince do the world a favor or a disservice? The Territories sounded like little fiefdoms run by many people just as bad if not even worse than VKM.

Would you be my new best friends?

Somebody told Vince back in 2001 that now that he owned WWE and WCW, he had brought the two companies together into the biggest union in wrestling history.

"A union eh? We'll see about that!" declared Vince, and promptly set about trying to run this "union" out of business no matter what it took.

The opportunities were there, just with other territories dying.

The Sheik (and a bad economy) killed Detroit. Georgia started running shows in the Ohio portion of the territory in the early 1980s. Los Angeles was hanging on by a thread in 1980. Florida was up for grabs once Eddie Graham died. Crockett was in a partnership with Maple Leaf in the late 1970s and had no problem running shows in border towns of other territories, such as Savannah. Flair and Mulligan attempted to run Knoxville in the late 1970s, failing miserably, but naturally were getting some help from Crockett.

Gulas' remaining area was dead by the end of the 1970s, as was Bruiser's Indiana. ICW ran in that area, but always were in bad financial straits.

WTBS' national reach was bringing in everybody and even if McMahon leaves it alone, somebody else would have made a play for it after Georgia struggled.

There was too much for promoters not to take.

What was the timeline on San Antonio's bid to go national? Was that before Vince or in reaction to?

By and large they were, but generally speaking the guys who ran the territories at least knew enough to protect their top-drawing guys (both heel and face) and were usually smart enough to know that if the fans got behind someone, they should push them as much as they could to make as much money as possible, instead of burying them or trying to humiliate them with a stupid gimmick. There are certainly exceptions to all this, of course; a lot of the promoters did suffer from terrible hubris to varying degrees, and many times let guys go who ended up doing tremendous business in the WWF (Verne refusing to make Hogan the top guy when he was red hot in the AWA is probably the best example of this).

The main benefit the territories provided was a variety of places for wrestlers to ply their trade and make money. To paraphrase Ole Anderson, during the territory days there were several dozen places a wrestler could go to and expect to make pretty decent money if they were any good, whereas nowadays that number is a hell of a lot smaller.

Nah, Verne couldn't really give Hogan the title, he was gone as soon as Vince called, regardless.

And Hogan worked with NJPW while the AWA's deal was with AJPW. But mainly because Hogan was going to leave the second Vince made his offer.

KISS ME KRIS

Wasn't Vince really the only one with the finances and the contacts that could have sustainably gone national? I remember both Mid-South and WCCW's national bids being hamstrung because they were run by incompetent lunatics instead of Vince's semi-competence.

Bill Watts was very competent he just ended up having to go the syndicated route because he lost out on cable and syndication costs and economic factors sunk him. WCCW died because well, people died.

Vince had New York and very early on LA which were the two most important markets where he could bring in lots of revenue and control the narrative he was wrestling. His competition was a group running the Carolinas.

Vince was in the best position to emerge from the cesspool once the dust had settled and he did.
You can't really call the collapse of the territories his fault, and even if it was it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of assholes.
That having been said Vince sure didn't have any trouble playing the victim when Bischoff turned his own tactics against him 5 years later.
Because Vince has absolutely no idea that 'giving opportunities' and 'poaching talent' are the same goddamn thing.
He sincerely doesn't. That's how narcissism works.
And why the invasion boiled down to Vince getting his revenge on his 'evil' competitors.

Do you think Watts would of had a chance to survive if it got the TBS slot after Black Saturday or was he already done by than?

He was getting great ratings in the slot he got so I am sure he'd have made a run of it, but it'd be tough with the economy in his territory tanking and not having the star power of Crockett let alone the WWF.

Supposedly he has spent money very freely and that is why he was doing all those high paying personal appearances until Vince threw even more money at him not to do them. I doubt he's ever been broke but it sounds like he still needs income. Racist t-shirts are expensive.

If you go broke investing in real estate, you're terrible at it. A market crash only means a gently caress if you sell before it bounces back.
