Reminds me of that Ohio teenager who got trapped in a van after the seats slid back over a storage space or something and then called the cops on his cell phone to get help but they didn't look closely enough and left him and he died.

This incident. Where part of the problem was there being 7 parking lots and the cops only taking 11 minutes to try to find him, but when he called back with the specific color and model of the van he was in the operator never responded or passed on the information.

I doubt a horse has ever looked below a semi trailer and assumed it could go under it. I doubt horses aim for firetrucks and school buses.

The thing that gets me is I'm not even sure how visible he was from the windows but you could at least knock on the back of each van and listen for a knock back.

It's true, but the average output of a horse over the course of a day is actually quite close to 1 horsepower. That's actually how a horsepower was first determined - by measuring how much power an average horse could put out through the course of a working day.

A horse, or a human for that matter, can put out considerably more than 1 horsepower for a short time.

ERM... Actually I have stellar scores on the surveys, and every year students tell me that my classes are the best ones they’ve ever taken.
Most humans can't reach that point and no human can put out "considerably" more than 1hp. Olympic athletes at peak exertion can get up to like 1500 watts (2hp) for a few seconds at a time but what most people consider vigorous exercise is like 200-250W (1/3hp) maybe.

World tour cyclist sprinters can absolutely crank out more than 1500 watts for more than a few seconds. Even some lower level pro sprinters can crack 2000 watts

here is the US national amateur crit champion Justin Williams peaking at 1900 watts and keeping it above 1500 for about 5 seconds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnIOty0PPIs

Top pro sprinters can go for more peak power and for longer

Hell, I am a garbage level cyclist and I can crack 1200 watts (1.6hp) for a few seconds in a sprint

I read that Chris Hoy could do 2500 watts peak for those super short track sprints. Which, based on his legs, seems plausible...

Maybe, but rowing races are much longer events so the effort has to be paced to some degree. Track cycling has funny stuff where lots of laps in a race are about positioning and they only actually sprint all-out for like 10 seconds, so they can peak super high without much endurance elements.

I remember in my high school physics class, we grabbed stopwatches, metersticks, and weighed volunteers. We then timed the volunteers running up a fight of stairs and saw who could break a horsepower. A couple guys did.

This one really gets me. I'm no engineer but it just seems that the forces on these pieces are going to be well in excess of what they can handle (and exerted in different directions than where they do have strength). These can't be off the shelf parts, right? Someone had to weld up this abomination?

Bad Munki

They’re off the shelf, just used wrong. The lift on the hitch there is intended for a tall truck and is being used upside down. The trailer is a bog standard fifth wheel and is supposed to go on a ball in the middle of the truck bed right over the axle, that’s why it has the big up-and-over profile on the tongue.

My grandfather was killed by a runaway trailer carrying a car, which was connected improperly and didn't have tow chains. It came off the truck, crossed lanes, and totaled the truck carrying my grandfather and brother. My brother spent three months in the hospital with broken legs and pelvis.

This person towing this abomination should have his license and insurance revoked.
