This photo immediately made me uncomfortable because all I can think of is how the finish on all that wood is probably in terrible shape and that it should probably all be cleaned off and reapplied

I don't know if that's the case or not, it's just my visceral reaction

Stage 2 will be some planters with some cacti and succulents and a flamingo and a pinwheel are both under strong consideration for the planters

How do you know which drawer is the magical underpants? Seriously though, I love love that colonial era (can't recall the exact term) style furniture and unequivocally hate anyone who refinishes one like that if it's not a very well done repro.

The picture is bad, but it looks like it's either trying to be a faux bois burl of some sort or maybe faux marble. Or maybe someone just 'yeah do a spongy beige thing on it, that'll look nice"

That house paid a reasonably skilled faux finisher's bills for a year or two.

It's Chippendale style which is under American colonial; the shell motif and the shape of the top are how you know, but otherwise it's not nearly ornate enough. Either someone ruined an incredible antique by cutting the finials off and swapping the knobs, or that's one ugly reproduction.

The neoclassical approach to grandma's baroque furniture was often white wash and sponge painting, so my money is on some sad derivative of that look that doesn't know it's supposed to look aged/like fake marble.

Have none of you actually seen old furniture? That's a perfectly normal finish for an old piece. The colour is loving ugly but

My dude there is no way that thing is a legit old piece of furniture. The wood on the side panel kind of looks like Birdseye, but it’s likely whatever poo poo finish was put on at the poo poo furniture factory. Bonus for the finial that’s just a weird large ball.

I bought a couch and two chairs from Apt 2B. Scary as hell to do it sight unseen. I’ve had it for 7 months now, and it’s outstanding in every way. Everyone told me not to do it, but they all love it.

Wirecutter had a pretty comprehensive guide to online sofa makers a while back. My takeaway was most of them are fine, if pricey, but they're all so new no one really knows how long they will last you.
