I doubt anyone could because it looks like it smells like poo poo and you know what they say... I play gzdoom with a ds4 and it's perfect, I can't see any reason to get the console port besides maybe split screen or trophies

If it uses Unity it's most likely as a shell around an actual source port, similar to Sega's Genesis emulator on Steam or the way Master Chief Collection uses UE4 for its menus.
This is what it is, from the sounds of things. It's Nerve's DoomClassic port from XBLA/BFG Edition compiled into a shared library and loaded into Unity. For... some reason. Probably to use the same code on four different consoles at once without duplicating work.

Is it a one-time thing where you login and verify stuff on the first startup and you're done, or do you need to login everytime you boot up the game?

Or is it even worse, where you have to stay online at all times to play?

From what I can tell, you have to log in first time, but after that it seems to work fine. I was able to start Doom 1 iOS in Airplane Mode with no issues beyond a vague "some features may be unavailable" warning on startup.

So from playing it on PS4, here's how it works. You have to create or login the first time you boot it up. It should log you in automatically every time after that, but yes it requires the login each time. I got a notice during play that said I got disconnected from the servers and that "network features" would be unavailable, but was able to continue playing.

What network features those are is a mystery to me, because the only multiplayer stuff I could find is all local only.

So wait, if you turn off your switch before heading to the bus, you can't play Doom on the bus? (I don't know how switches (the console) work)

I'm away from home but did they delete from Microsoft servers the old 360 XBL ports of Doom 1 and 2? Because it would suck if I ever want to redownload them on a newer Xbox in the future.

I own a PS4 too, but if the ports are so sloppy and require a login, I can live without yet another copy of both games.

From the sounds of things, they've been knocked offline accidentally and are getting restored sometime soon. Apparently the PS3 port had a similar issue and has already been fixed?

Getting it running as homebrew isn't sufficient for Bethesda to sell it officially. I don't know what all features the switch version has, but if you want to do achievements or multiplayer that's gonna be a good bit of work, testing things to make them polished enough to actually sell is a whole thing, and then you have to get it certified by Nintendo which you don't if you're just throwing a homebrew build on.

Angry_Ed posted:

I have no idea why you're defending this decision.

I'm not defending it and I never said anything of the sort. I really hate this binary thinking "with us or against us". You can be wrong and Bethesda can also be wrong. I'm not saying Doom should have DRM, that's stupid.

But flipping out about unity makes no sense, you're blaming the wrong things.

Angry_Ed posted:

My point was it's ridiculous to put always-online DRM for this offline Switch port

Every now and then I daydream of a hypothetical Doom 2.5 where id/Bethesda takes a bunch of Doom community members and gives them a budget to create the perfect source port for all systems, complete with it's own episode chock full of new assets, and an easy-to-use, Steam Workshop-like community interface that allows users of all skill levels to create custom content and share it without having to dive through dozens of message boards/mod sites/twitter feeds.

Then I realize who Doom's owner currently is, and the grim reality of what happens when you add commerce to modding communities, and I boot up Gzdoom instead.

edit: I still have high hopes for Ion Fury, though
