The only real problem with double spacing after stops is that it's so inconsistently used. Ultimately it's solved with a simple "find/replace" and even the old fogies who write the documents I gotta edit are never the wiser that their double spaces are gone. Even with typewriters it's not super necessary. I have a couple from the 30s and 40s and it's not visually necessary and the mechanisms don't lock up or anything if you don't double space after hitting period.
