psydude posted:Why don't they start calling themselves Anti Fascists instead of this stupid contraction. That would probably put a lot of questions about their motives to bed. And then cue all the chuds and fascists going to great length to "well, actually" and gaslight about how they're not fascist or fascist enablers, so why don't the anti-fascists go overthrow Maduro or fascist SJWs or something? Chasing a brand-name that would get the right to accept the left would be more leftist self-ownage. And antifa doesn't exist to win over the coin-toss centrist; they exist to gently caress up fascists. Regular-rear end GOTV and so on can try to win over centrist votes.

The right has excelled for years at rebranding their warmed over fascist ideology to make it seem more appealing to the average voter. So they come up with poo poo like the Tea Party, which sells because it evokes the image of Patriots fighting the British, rather than a corporate tax evasion movement largely funded by Koch Industries. Meanwhile the left is too high on its own zine ink to realize that the way to win a populist movement is with actual popular support. God forbid they invest any effort in figuring out ways to brand or market that to people who can't spend time bothering to research what antifa or socialism actually entail to the average person. Adjusting a PR strategy for the reality on the ground isn't ceding ground to the right, it's accounting for what the actual voters demand. And there won't be any change for the better without it. e: I guess my point is that you can't decouple standard political GOTV poo poo from combating radical ideology. The whole reason radical ideologies like fascism exist in the first place is because people don't understand the alternatives. psydude fucked around with this message at 10:32 on Jul 28, 2019 |

I think what antifa calls themselves has precious little to do with any potential swing-voters’ or potential stay-home voters’ thoughts. More important than rebranding Antifa in particular? Virtually any other activity to motivate people to go vote. What voting bloc exists who would vote if only Antifa could be convinced to rebrand as “Anti-Fascist”?

Saying antifa should rebrand is mistaken in two ways, the first of which is attempting to get Republican propaganda to not smear their enemies as violent terrorists bent on raping your dog and threatening your The second way is saying antifa should do something is like saying taco truck should something. There is no centralized antifa to do that. It's a street level movement where fascists show up, start their poo poo threatening a neighborhood and hurting people so the antibodies of society get produced on the street and start bashing the fasc.

The right has been going on about antifa being "the real fascists" since 2016, so I don't think rebranding will do poo poo. Surprisingly enough, the right is full of poo poo and a bunch of untrustworthy liars (exhibit a: Mitch McConnell). Also, just as bird food bathtub said, it's not a centralized organization in the slightest. You may as well yell at people who call non-Coke Cola products Coke and should call them all by their exact name. Yeah, they are wrong, but it's never going to happen unless you declare martial law.

shame on an IGA posted:lol importing the Bernard McFacknuttah business model tbh it worked out very well in my old department. All the reservists had full-time jobs that paid better than being cops, so we all did it because we wanted to help the community. If we were on patrol, we basically ignored bullshit victimless calls - people smoking pot, low-level speeding, etc - and only really responded to crimes with actual victims. When we weren't on patrol, we worked vehicle accidents, parade escorts, etc, to free up full-time cops to be back on the street instead of babysitting civic events. Also, it got my Air Force chain of command off my back about finding some "community service" to put on my EPR. LingcodKilla posted:I dunno I would consider joining to .... to observe and report back to IA but I have little faith in them. Speaking as someone who works with law enforcement regularly- though not law enforcement myself and wanting nothing to do with that kind of crap... Reserve cops are a Thing. It’s kind of a mixed bag, but the poo poo ones tend to not last long. They don’t last long mainly because people don’t want to deal with them, and they’re easy and quick to get rid of. At least in my experience. They are a helpful augmentation for reasons already stated. Where I have seen them, they have had to go through the same training as career cops. They just don’t get paid, or paid minimally, for their work ($X per call, $X per shift worked, where X is a pittance at best). Same as volunteer firefighters, you get the ones who either want to be Rambo, and wash out quick or get their rear end ripped for being stupid (and always paired with someone more experienced), or they just genuinely want to help. Same as volunteer or part time firefighters, it’s a useful career track for people who do want to do law enforcement as a career, but need or want experience so you don’t end up with nothing but pure douchebags in every cop or firefighter role. USUALLY, departments notice when you keep getting fired from those types of gigs. Especially in small career fields. And I also don’t really know of a department where a reserve would be on duty by themselves. But, maybe that’s just my experience. Edit: They are easy to get rid of because they are non-guild. Edit 2: Legit, if you’re gonna get pissed about unpaid intern cops, I have a whole spiel I could go into about unpaid/low paid and no benefits firefighters. Our cancer rates are through the loving roof. Breast cancer alone, even among males, averages at 700% higher rate than general population. To be fair to the poor dumb gently caress Chris McCandless, noone knew at the time that those wild potato seeds were hazardous, they were widely considered wholly edible even to locals and bush hikers, because they're not hazardous if you're not having lost a third of your body weight due to not being able to sustain your caloric intake. Those potato seeds are perfectly safe to eat if you are not malnourished but if you are in survival mode one of the amino acids known as ODAP causes permanent paralysis. It's hilariously specific, but that's also why noone knew the poo poo was hazardous, and why his guide book that he had didn't mention it (it took nearly 10 years of scientists arguing at each other after he died to determine that there was a hazardous level of ODAP in the potato seeds) . There's no cure for it, no waiting it out, it attacks the nerves in your legs and you can no longer walk because the nerves are literally dead and gone, and then you die. If he hadn't eaten the potato seeds he probably would have walked out of the forest in August just fine. They actually only figured out it was ODAP from a report from a concentration camp in Ukraine where starving male Jews were fed a diet that included meal made from a wild pea plant that had the same effect as the potatoes.
