https://press.aboutamazon.com/news-releases/news-release-details/starting-monday-july-15-ask-alexa-what-are-my-prime-day-deals-0 I picked up my 10" on a lark from last year's $100 sale and have been happy with it, mostly for reading comic books and non-comic books. I installed the Google ecosystem on it too and my kid loves it for the games and various Play-apps that work with it.

Fire 8 isn't just smaller, it's also got a lower density display at 1280x800 resolution

So what are my options for getting out of Android lollipop and into something a little more modern? Looking for a decent screen used to read ebooks and manga, and light browsing and youtube watching. Currently using a Samsung S 8.4, which feels a little long in the tooth by now.

I want to get a tablet and I've decided on the Galaxy Tab S4. I already have a Samsung phone with an ATT data plan. Do I need to buy the ATT version of the Tab S4 to tether to my phone, or can I use the regular, non branded type? I don't want to buy a data plan for the tablet since I'd rarely use it while away from wi-fi, but I'd like to have the option on the rare car trip.

Usually they make you pay extra to do that. In my case it was easier to buy 5gb/5 months for $10 than pay an extra 10$/month for hotspot (some vendors offer cheap plansfor LTE tablets because they want your business)

How is the Pixel Slate and the Chrome OS in general? Best Buy is offering them for $200 bucks off today and I was thinking of picking one up to upgrade from the old Lenovo android tablet I have now. Or would I be better off waiting for a sale on Samsung proper Android tablets?

Is it possible to find an Android tablet with a 12" or larger screen? Notably, I don't need a keyboard or a "laptop lite" experience, or high performance. I would use it for reading and for reading sheet music. I've seen musicians make great use of the big iPad Pro, but the thing costs a fortune and all it needs to do is show black dots on white paper.

I think at that point you're going to be stuck with searching for 2-in-1 laptops in your price range unless there's some offbrand stuff on the Chinese marketplaces available. You might not need the keyboard on the 2-in-1 but it can work as a kickstand if you flip it into tent mode, and some models have the keyboard as detachable.

there must be so many 2 in 1 chromebooks out there under $200 that fit this description and use case 100%

Well, the reason I ask about tablets is that it must: 1) Be light and thin enough to keep on a music stand 2) Have a touchscreen 3) Be able to run some software for sheet music. I've found good examples on Android, IOS and Windows but I don't know what a Chromebook can run. And the crux is 4) be at least 12" diagonal... Edit: Newegg has a cheap Lenovo Chromebook that I would use, except it's only 11.6" and it's not listed as being able to run Android apps on https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/chromium-os/chrome-os-systems-supporting-android-apps Hippie Hedgehog fucked around with this message at 13:09 on Jul 29, 2019 |

That might not be the worst idea. Not many used ones available locally, but they're about the same price as a new cheap Lenovo Flex 14". The Lenovo has a terrible screen compared to the Surface. Edit:Ebay cheaper of course. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F293162167010 He has a hundred of them? :-O Gonna try my use case on a friend's Surface Pro first, see how I like it. Just a heads up, theres some very dodgy tablets going around on Ebay.. If your wondering what your looking at, Thats an android 4.4 tablet with the OS identity string sabotaged to say Android 8.1 I won't name names, but its basically tablets for under $100 (significantly under in some cases) claiming to be;- Android 8.1 : (Its android 4.4) 2Ghz: (Its 1.3ghz) 10 Core: (Ad claims 10 core, SpecDevice claims 5 cores, but I cant find any evidence of the ARM7s with 5 cores ....Its a mystery) Resolution : 2560*1600: (Its 1280x800) 4Gb Ram: (Its 1Gb) 64gb Storage: (Its 16 Gb) 4G phone: (Couldn't actually get this to work, the baseband identifier suggests its only 2G/GSM) The worst part is they've hacked the settings app to claim its got all the things in the ad, but on deeper dive its just fraud. I've contacted eBay but they dont seem interested in investigating it because the seller refunded me (Only after I threatened to rat him out to the Malaysian Commercial Crime Investigation Division) so I guess best I can do is just raise the alarm publicly not to buy these counterfeit tablets

Its greenonions111 Heres the ad;- https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/273850285218?ul_noapp=true Heres the fuckery Note the vastly different story told by Spec Device and the Settings app https://imgur.com/a/u0Y9xj7 Re OS version. Three data points there. API19 = Android 4.4. The Kernel version is the Linux kernel used in 4.4 and most damning, if you tap the OS version 5 times, it plays the Android 4.4 Kitkat easter egg. This shits been tampered with Also theres this. I just realised this is almost certainly only 4 core. CPU is a MediaTex MT6582. Thats not 10 core, nor even 5 core . Its just a 4 core 32 bit relatively ancient Arm7 device http://specdevice.com/showspec.php?id=6410-fb7f-5b5f-cf180033c587 edit: Looks like Ebay shut them down. I cant find any evidence of the seller at all. edit2: Nope. I'm looking for something for the kids (2 & 4) to look at the tubes on, for me to blog on, and some basic word processing and spreadsheet stuff. Is an iPad with a keyboard a good option for this?

Is an iPad with a keyboard a good option for this? Depending on the intensity of the spreadsheets, maybe. Pivot tables or copy/cutting rows is difficult for me with touch controls. Granted I haven’t tried office 365, just the free apple one and google docs in safari. Just making a table though? Sure

My Nexus 7 is still trucking along, I use it to read e-books in class and if I want to load Youtube or Netflix (for my kids, after class) I cross my fingers and wait a few minutes while it chugs along. I think the go to replacement is some sort of Amazon flavor of tablet? My problem with that is 1) gently caress Jeff Bezos and 2) is it possible to load the Google Play store? At the very least, I want Chrome instead of Amazon's own crappy browser. I used to have a Kindle Kid's edition, it lasted less than a year before the Micro USB port wore out and it no longer charges, the worst part about it was the Fire OS was a piece of poo poo. I own a Pixel XL and Pixel 2 XL and a Nexus 7 - I really like bare bones vanilla Android and from what I remember, Fire OS is (was?) Android with several layers of Amazon bloat. Can I de-bloat a Kindle and hack on the Play store? If a Kindle is not the right option, I know I saw Onn recommended but I'm hesitant to want to trust a Walmart brand to last a long time. I've bought Onn electronics in the past - specifically speakers or sound bars, and have always ended up returning them due to dissatisfaction or terrible interfaces. My next option would be maybe a Samsung tablet except I thought Samsung likes to cram a ton bloat onto devices and I really do not want Bixby in my life. I think a new surface is out of my budget, I'm almost ready to join the cult of Steve Jobs but I'm pretty sure Apple is even farther outside of my budget. TLDR; what Android tablet has a vanilla OS, a 7" to 10" screen (7" preferred) and costs about $300? My budget can stretch a little if necessary. Also, wireless charging or a durable (gently caress Micro USB) charging port are highly preferred.

I got a chuwi hi9p and it is fine for almost the same usecase as yours. Mostly bought it because it was the cheapest usb-c tablet a year ago, and because amazon rarely has cheap sales in my region. Almost stock android, but almost not updates. And the changelog and update messages are only in Chinese.

I don't know who would pay more than $250 for an android tablet at this point unless you live in a society where not only your phone, but also the tablet you use is a status indicator. I don' think the public knows/cares enough about the tablet market to really assign much value to a $700 tablet especially if it's not an Apple. Also Tablets sort of peaked in 2013 when the Nexus 7/Original iPad Air came out and nothing has really changed in the last 6 years with tablets so they all look the same at this point.

Hi9 plus arrived today, first impressions I like it. It's far more responsive than my Nexus 7 but it's not as fast as my pixel phone. The only minor annoyance i have found is that the official Netflix refuses to install, says it is incompatible. Is there a good 3rd party Netflix app?
