Kind of. In Canada there were, at one time, 3 major sports channels: TSN, Headline Sports (later Sportsnet), and The Score. The Score later got merged with Headline Sports and turned into Sportsnet, and that channel had the WWE contract in Canada. They showed NXT before it became a Network show and also show RAW and SD. SD used to have a recap/reaction show called Right After Wrestling (first letter of each word, durr clever), then it was changed to Aftermath. It was hosted by an interesting crew: Jim Korderas (yes, the former ref), Renee (back when her name was Renee Paquette, Young is a WWE name), Mauro Ranallo, and a SN employee named Arda Orcal. It wasn't bad as far as those types of shows go, partly because it was kept loose, it was only 1/2 hour long, and while WWE used to own a piece of The Score, they weren't bashful about being critical of the product. Like, they didn't hammer it, but that's to be expected since they were still network employees, and the product was a bit better during that period ('09-12).

Some sketchy thoughts about a serious topic...

I’m a union man. I’ve been in the union since I’ve been at my work and I’ve been on strike several times to safeguard my employment rights. I LOVE unions.

So I’m stoked that wrestlers are starting to unionise, even if maybe the GMB might be a better fit than Equity. But it opens a can of worms that I don’t think a lot of people have thought about, or want to think about...

Wrestlers aren’t the only people who work at shows. If wrestlers have union protection, then how about other performers, like valets, referees, and ring announcers? How about the ring crew? Or the music guy? Or the ticket seller? Do they not deserve the rights and protections afforded by being in a union?

And this is where it gets sticky. Because although (I’d hope, it’s 2019) wrestlers are paid to perform, many (most?) of the other workers - and it is a job of work - on shows are not. And that’s been the way for a long while and you could wave it away by talking about volunteers, and paying dues, and maybe that shows might not even happen if you had to pay everyone.

But unionisation of wrestlers changes things. No union member should feel comfortable working in an environment where an essential job is done by an unpaid person. No union should allow that. At my work we have volunteers but the union dictates exactly what tasks they can do.

Like I said, sketchy thoughts but what does anyone else think?

Well this is a start in the industry. I imagine ultimately it will be a lot like every other television production, the talent is a part of one union, the technical/backstage staff is another (sometimes several). Only thing that will likely not be union would be venue workers like in sporting leagues, which I find bullshit. Those people work hard and get paid poo poo. If I am paying 12 dollars for a beer they should be making more than peanuts.

We really need a major push towards unionization again. I feel like the tide is turning the other way again, especially in younger people's eyes.

Kayfabe is dumb, unless the show is on. If the show is on, don't break kayfabe. Don't "He's not following the script!?!" on commentary.

It is a show. When you turn on Lost, Jack Shepard doesn't go "poo poo I forgot the numbers to type in good thing this is actually New Zealand and I'm actually Matthew Fox, I'll go home and bang a supermodel.*" And Matthew Fox doesn't go on The Tonight Show with Conan O Brian* and act all confused that Conan is on the island.

Don't get it twisted who your enemies are.
People who get upset that wrestlers don't stay in character when the TV is off or the show is over are probably the kind of people who rant about participation awards and snowflakes on facebook. If a wrestler is posting videos of themselves hollering about how wrestling is fake then yes sure I might get where Cornette and his legion of idiot fans are coming from. But nobody actually does this. They seem to think being an actual person and not pretending you're a cartoon character 24/7 is somehow destroying the wrestling business. They're brainless stupid idiot dumbshits. Stop giving them the time of day. Cornette I'm sure does believe most of the poo poo he spews out to a degree but he absolutely turns the dial up because he's still just as much of a carny as he always has been and still knows how to fleece the kind of loving morons who'll listen to him.

Lance Storm's response to Grace's post was way more sensible. He basically pointed out that musicians and actors often have stage names and use those when interacting with fans, and using your real name on social media and stage name on screen/shows could be confusing and damaging to the brand you're trying to build. (Xavier Woods also made the point that he knows WWE owns that name, which is why he uses Austin Creed on his YouTube channel)

I get that talent don’t want to be whatever character they play on TV all day. Those days are completely over. I understand where Lance is coming from on a certain point but Pink for example is not playing a character named Pink, that is just a stage/nickname. There is a big difference there. There are things that a talent may do or say in character that is not indicative of who they are in real life. It is important for the fans to know that and that there are boundaries as well.

I love Corny but he is stuck in 1986 forever. Yes kayfabe was important in the old days because the average fan didn’t know it was a work especially in the south where you had and sadly still have less educated and more gullible population. The lid on that is so far gone it makes little sense to keep it up. I mean Chris Pratt doesn’t pretend to be Starlord or Andy Dwyer all the time. Method actors are actually looked at as weird. It would be no different with wrestling.

Gumball Gumption

It has to be far more exhausting to keep kayfabe now too. In the past guys could spend days just chilling at home, not going out in public, not doing tv, and just be themselves. Now everyone is way more wired and connected and if you're a wrestler you need to be working things like Twitter to keep that fan engagement going. The number of hours you're expected to be "on" is a lot higher then it was in the past.

This is kind of what I think too. People put their real names on social media because they don't wanna have to be their gimmick all the time. It doesn't really matter and according to these very forums it can make you unlikable depending on the circumstances. Some people are great at keeping kayfabe but at the end of the day we all know it's acting.
