This is already worse than the military dictatorship without AI-5. This time with complete dumbshits in office, which is even more dangerous. He's already feuding with INPE, one of Brazil's most prestigious scientific institutions. We're diving headfirst to the stone age.

This is not really the case. Muppets or not, they did in 6 months what our oh-so-serious media accudes th labour government of doing the last 13 years: completely infected every power with their nepotist, ideological peers, disarmed or destroyed any institution that balked or that they didn't like, and openly jeered at any thought of propriety, decorum or limits to their agenda.
I haven’t lived their in a few years and I mostly get news through this thread and comrades' fb posts, but I don't get the impression that this is a concerted effort to consolidate power and maintain it. It seems more like a bunch of jackals threw decorum and propriety out the window and everyone, including the old guard, is going through their wishlists and trying to squeeze as much as they can out of this window of opportunity. Lots of extreme right wing governments that get elected to power go through the same kinds of chud check-lists and dismantling the "leftist" state organs, but you still wouldn't characterise them as dictatorships.

Are the living conditions worse than the dictatorship? Not yet, (unless you're in poverty, indigenous, or landless) but it has the potential to be.

It seems like a long continuation of what's been happening since impeachment, only accelerated now that the behind-the-scenes stuff is being done openly, as if they won a grand mandate by overwhelming majority in the election.

The erosion of checks and balances to power and the open corruption and collusion of the three powers, as well as the fourth estate definitely sets the groundwork for a dictatorship to emerge, but I can't see Bolsonaro or PSL, or even Moro, anywhere near the helm.

If you're an accelerationist, the damage they're doing is also creating conditions for revolutionary movements (but we know which way that goes)

If Lula was released and somehow re-invented himself as a libertarian, all the chuds just might reform as a revolutionary socialist vanguard just so they'd be as far from him on the spectrum as possible.

Other than that, you're on the money.

I've watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrUXs-5Ins4

It made me sad because it made me realize that Brazil is a nation that essentially had a short time of progress, then a military dictatorship, then a flawed democracy, then ten years of progress, and now it's sliding back down to authoritarianism again.

It makes sense why America is one of the most developed nations on earth while Brazil is so poor on contrast.

Those wankers were spreading deliberate slander about Mariele Franco being a drug dealer and have been boosting and enabling every crook and madman until the point where it started to set their house on fire, and still kept going for a bit longer until the flames were in the living room just for good measure.

Is Bolsonaro's caving popularity leading to a rise in the left or are people just becoming apathetic, or even worse even more right wing?

In my experience, more apathetic. Lots of "Well, if even the 'outsider' we voted in is still a dumb crook, I guess the system is just broken and nothing matters. Except keeping the left down, that is."

I'd buy that if João Amoedo they had been elected, a dude that's been a representative for 30 years is not a loving outsider and anyone who claimed to vote for that reason is either hopelessly naïve or shy about sharing Bostonaro's worldview.

But yeah, I am also seeing more apathy from where I am standing.

Oh definitely. My blood turns to vapor whenever people say Bolso and his spawn are not part of the system. They are the definition of 'lower clergy' scum.

But part of our national insanity apparently involves believing that they landed in a UFO from planet Morals in the year 2017 tovsave Brazil.

Bolzi became an "outsider" because he is clearly not cut for politics, but is there anyway. Him being actually a career politician is a plus, he's the guy that beat the system.

It is, for the prisoners

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F8gi9c20uI

in 1992, 111 prisoners were gunned down in cold blood in the Carandiru Penitentiary, the survivors were made to drag the bodies.

That was a huge incident that sparked media attention, but poo poo like this goes on to this day, along with the right-wing paramilitary death squads and mass jailing of (poor, young, black) people who are imprisoned for years before their trial even begins.

Make no mistake, this country is a meat grinder, and has been since the colonial era where they had to continually import slaves because the ones in the farms died too fast.
