admittedly the issues was something about his blippi persona just felt "off" to me and then googling about it after the fact confirmed for me why i was getting a weird vibe. afaik there's nothing explicitly related to his earlier stuff in his new kid friendly format, but it's one of those things where i feel better safe than sorry just excising that content wholesale

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone actually use the word "confirm" when describing their own confirmation bias before.

I think you're general approach to kids and screens is spot on though, including following your instincts like that.

the only tangible benefit to having been extremely online since i was 14 is that i have developed an extremely acute ability to detect weird poo poo online. ironically, i'm just trying to make sure my daughter doesn't spend her youth watching swap.avi and 2girls1cup and mr. hands and etc.

basically it requires you to engage with your kid for the entire duration, which for most people defeats the purpose of buying a tablet toy (you want it to be a thing your kid can self-occupy with for three minutes so that you can do some outlandishly selfish thing like take a poo poo without interruption).

I mean fundamentally it sounds like the idea is that parents need to interact with their children and not expect a gadget to raise them instead.

Which I realize is easier said than done in an age where both parents need to work 2 jobs.

Having a parent present to give context to the media can help a great deal. When I was little I loved pro wrestling and my dad explained how it was staged, scripted, and made up to look exciting. His experience working as an ER nurse helped reinforce to me that stomping on someone's face wasn't an OK thing to do, and you won't walk it off with a few scuff marks if you are on the receiving end of it in real life.

like if you posted bad when we were growing up you got banned. kids these days have no mods/admins to fear. Instagram and Snapchat should hire lowtax to lead their moderation and give him free reign to ban kids who can’t post good.

I should have linked her deviant art gallery, but I was more concerned with just getting the leached image to appear in-line. She's a great artist.

It's like that Regnerus study that tried to prove gay adoption hurts kids but all that came out statistically significant was the kid receiving daily attention. Good luck being a stay-at-home parent in this day and age tho

He was trying to hop on the Harlem Shake video bandwagon and get Internet Famous. He found out that talking to toddlers in a silly outfit was far more popular and easily monetized so he switched to that. My 2.5 year old LOVES Blippi so I too have watched a lot of it.
I confess I am impressed at how calculated the videos are- it's only ever really him in shot, minimal interactions with other children to make it feel your toddler is the only one he is talking to. My kid can spell Blippi's name because he tells them how to at the end of every video. He knows about colours and shapes and tractors and zambonis because of him. Best for us, his merchandise isn't plastered over the shops here in the UK so I don't get hounded to buy Blippi stuff.

I watched this little 'behind the scenes' video about him, the guy is very very savvy and I have to give him props for that-

We don't live in a society, that implies a structure that consists of and accommodates humans. We live in a system that is designed to house, protect and serve money, which humans are peripheral to.

That was my thought, too. Then again, I know a local indie movie theatre that actually has a concession menu that looks just like that.

Also, I'll n-th the "sad as gently caress" look of that, but I'll add that they could have at least added a couch or something, even if "sometimes I just want to lie down and watch a movie" is the justification.

Does capitalism reinforce stereotypes? Because I imagine that commenter is only going off of the headline + her photo.

It seems that the movie/tv industry certainly keep stereotypes going. Also corporate news. Also advertising. poo poo, I guess I just answered my own question.
