My cat passed last night after a hard fight with cancer. I really, really should not have read those comics just before going to work. She'll always be my baby girl. Go smooch your cats for me if you could.

I just got home last night after almost a month out of town, and my assholes had covered my entire house in an inch of fur. I was annoyed, but maybe the inconvenience isn’t the important thing. They’re hovering around that 7-8 years old area where they start to slow down noticeably, and I start to think a lot about their health. I hope they have a lot of good years left in them.

Cat comic had me bawlling my eyes out. Here's my fluff, Morgan 14 year-old lady who unfortunately had a to have an eye removed this past March due to a resistant infection. She had a mass behind it that was pushing it out (which the vet ophthalmologist initially thought was cancer since it wasn't reacting to antibiotics), and caused her to develop a corneal sequestrum. Poor girl couldn't fully close her eye when she slept. She's doing so much better now, and loves the Timberland box I got with my boots (the only time she's been into sitting in a box!). She does have me a little freaked with her inner eyelid in her remaining eye looking irritated. But the vet looked her over on that and said she doesn't have anything concerning with it (no fever, eye wasn't infected, blinking fine, no obstruction of movement, no excess eye gunk) and that it could be her age and allergies. Big fluffball's most likely not aware of how many heart attacks she's given me this year. Cercueil has a new favorite as of 02:23 on Jul 30, 2019 |

C. E. Croix posted:Cat comic had me bawlling my eyes out. This is likely unnecessary - but useful; my one cat, Noodles, now fourteen, went completely blind in under an hour about three years ago. One minute he was fine, the next, he was under an end-table, growling & hissing as though he were in the midst of a major cat throw-down (he never has been: he's an indoor cat, and in spite of being obese, has never expended the energy to do more than hiss at new kittens). It took a trip to the vet the next day to have her guess that he had some kind of odd stroke event. IN ANY EVENT, within a week, he was negotiating the entire house, including the basement steps. After a month, you'd never know he was blind. I'm struggling to keep his weight down, since he can't run around/be nearly as active as he used to, but so far, aside from the fact that he has zero problem finding the food, that's been the only problem. (EDIT) the sewing-table diet has not been very successful (that's Noodles on the floor...he can't climb up on hard surfaces any more). PainterofCrap has a new favorite as of 03:31 on Jul 30, 2019 |

Then she lay about with a bloated belly for hours until she spent a long time in the yard producing humongous dumps.

My parents had one lab who could literally suck in his entire food bowl in about 3 gulps. You'd place the bowl down, look up to see a bird or something flying by in the backyard, then look down again and he's acting like the food just disappeared and baffled why you won't give him more.

Sure would explain a lot about why the only thing they won’t randomly ignore is their stomach. Sadly Bo has a gluten allergy, he would have been hospitalized after a trick like that (eating half a loaf of French bread had him puking for days).

Nope; the only other breed known to have the mutation is the Flat-Coated Retriever, since they and Labs both descend from the now-extinct St. John's Water Dog. (Having had a beagle in the past, though, they certainly are voracious eaters!)

Not every labrador has the mutation though. The allele frequency was found to be about 12 % (which is still quite prevalent). The odd thing is that the frequency rose to 45 % when they looked at assistance dogs, so the mutation may also influence desirable assistance dog traits in some way
