A reminder that we don't nominate with a national vote and the state level polls look very different. The latest poll in California for example has Biden in 4th.

Plus all polls are based off assumptions about what likely voter turnout is gonna be, and Sanders' strategy is explicitly " get people who don't normally vote engaged and voting." If that works, the polls will likely be off by quite a bit.

orange juche posted:How the hell does biden poll at 35%, leading Warren by a full 20%, and Sanders isn't even on the same map. It's exactly that. My dad, someone who traveled from the northeast to march with Dr. King in Washington, protested the Vietnam war, someone who has been a liberal democrat forever. He's someone who has studied and taught history, political history for decades. He said he's worried that Warren and Bernie are going to alienate all the old Democrats like my dad. He believes that everything that we like in this thread are absolutely going to alienate so many older Dems that Trump might even have a chance at a second term if Warren or Bernie get the nomination. Things like free college, forgiving student loans, medicare for all, are turning off rear end in a top hat democrats because of the automatic gutteral reaction of "harumph! If I had to do it the hard way, you should too!" We all know that's hosed up and bullshit, because these old baby boomer assholes didn't have to deal with our skyrocketed education and healthcare costs, and they think just because they went through rough poo poo like the Cold War and a rough economy in the 70s that things are all find and dandy, because they don't understand the simple fact that just because Wall Street market is doing great doesn't mean we aren't all hosed with our debt and underemployment and the coming layoffs due to automation and the coming climate apocalypse. We all recognize this. They don't. It's unfortunately going to take 20 years until the baby boomers all die out for things to get moderately better. (Note: not all baby boomers are bad, or conservative, or assholes, or are center right Democrats). Unfortunately, by then, we'll be too hosed because it'll be too late to stop us from going past 4* much less 2* celcius so climate change will gently caress over the entire planet and good loving luck with all of that poo poo. A large portion of any poll worth the paper it’s printed on of Democratic primary voters is going to have a high proportion of black voters who are traditionally very slow to shift their support. IIRC by this point in 07 Hillary was still outpolling Obama (maybe it was s-l-o-w-l-y staring to shift?). They’re name-conservative but they’re smart, they’ll figure out the best candidate (hint: not loving Biden). Schadenboner fucked around with this message at 00:58 on Jul 31, 2019 |

Also, keep in mind we're still months away from primaries. At this point during the 2016 race, Bush was polling better than Trump.

If we're going to talk about wild primaries and possible influence operations it seems about the right time to say 2020 feels a whole lot like 1968. E: within weeks we will see Trump conducting Watergate like bungling while trying to gently caress with the Democratic primaries. The ratfucking will be on an entirely different level.

IIRC by this point in 07 Hillary was still outpolling Obama (maybe it was s-l-o-w-l-y staring to shift?). Black voters tend make up a disproportionate portion of the moderate/conservative democratic voters which is a big reason why he's doing so well. That said I'm willing to bet there's also a big chunk of black voters who favor Biden right now because they haven't engaged with the race yet and he not only has name recognition, but name recognition from being associated with Obama. It's really too early to tell how big the second chunk is (polling seems to suggest black women in particular are more likely to move away from Biden), but I wouldn't assume that Biden is going to lose the high support among black voters he currently enjoys. edit: My completely untested, unverified, theory on this is that there is a large contingent of conservative black voters that vote democrat because of the GOPs racism.
