I remember getting into an argument with a friend about the origins of the name Secret Chiefs, saying that it was a reference to Allistar Crowley, as he claimed his knowledge came from a Secret Chief name Lem. My friend refused to believe that, which was odd because he was the one of our friends who was actually into Crowley. I had just learned that fact from a comic about him. A few years later he said "uh yea that Secret Chiefs thing, you were completely right".

I only remember this because he was super duper insistent on it not being a reference.

I don't know if it was just out circle of friends and those around us, but the late 90s there was a lot of interest in esoteric weirdness. Probably due to the internet being more accessible and that was one of the big things after porn and music that was on there. I don't think any of us actually believed there were actually magic and ancient aliens and such, but it was fascinating.

They turn up on the radio from time to time. I only like them because I have two older brothers who taught me what to listen to in the 90’s.

Old school RHCP and Faith No More, Aquabats, Bad Religion, Rage Against the Machine and Phish.

Also I had no idea the singer for FNM was the voice of The Darkness. Those games ruled.

I think, at least with Epic, it was timing. It came out about the time (hair) metal was fading and grunge was taking off. Plus, didn't FNM not really have a set style, but was very experimental? It came out in 90 or 91 and didn't really fit in with more mainstream rock at the time but it wasn't quite grunge so it wasn't getting the alternative airplay.

I remember their cover of the Commodor's Easy getting more airplay than Epic a few years later..

One thing that always struck me when in the US was how Canada was more of a rock country while the US Hip Hop and R&B/Soul were way more popular. That's probably because Canada is a lot whiter than the US, but even when visiting Seattle at the hight of Grunge Mania i'd turn on the local radio or MTV and be greated by a bunch of Blackstreet songs. At least with the radio I could dial around and wait until I heard Soundgarden or something.

I remember FNM Small Victory was played a lot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9_hCjcFNO0
Back then it was one of those big "meaning" videos, but now I watch it, its basically just ever cliche for those videos. War is bad and people die! Christ Imagery! I do like how the guitarist is wearing sunglasses under his red rimmed glasses. I think FNM actually came in with RHCP. They were kind of that punk but with a funky baseline and lyrical flow. I mean check out We Care A Lot, which easily could be a RHCP song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQhX8PbNUWI
And video.

The kissing cops in the KMFDM reminded me of George Michael's attempt to recover from being caught jerkin' it in a park bathroom.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwZAYdHcDtU
It was in the Marilyn Manson video too but they decided that Michael's video was offensive so I only saw it once, then the next day they said the video was being pulled because Police had complained that it made them look bad. It also probably had to do with the video being super gay. I do like with the grungy bathroom turns into a disco bathroom, that's pretty funny.

I had this thought the other day, because I remembered that a teacher commented that Spanish Rock kind of had an 80s vibe to it. The joke with me and my rockero friends in school was that Mexico lagged 10 years behind the U.S. when it came to music, but were like 10 years ahead of the game for Anime.

I think this was the song that started the joke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9DcJaW9m_M
But that was released in 1990, so the influence is clear.

Then you had the perma-banger that closed out every Quinceañera and high school dance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcnNeGQHwDc
Which was a 92 release.

And then mid-decade you get Shakira's more varied sound with tinges of the GirlPower era that was unfolding in the U.S.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmJHH026X0c

Oddly enough, the light and bubbly pop sound seemed to filter down pretty quickly (96 release here)

Kiedis and Patton were both signed to Warner, who ended up doing zero marketing for Mr Bungle's California and bumped it back because the Chili Peppers were releasing Californication at the same time in 1999, which Kiedis wasn't happy about. Kiedis also got Mr Bungle kicked out of a bunch of festivals because part of his contract gave him a say in who could and couldn't perform.

Patton has claimed he has no idea why Kiedis has such a grudge, but it allegedly started in 1990 when Kiedis said in an interview "My drummer says he’s gonna kidnap [Patton], shave his hair off and cut off one of his feet, just so he’ll be forced to find a style of his own". Patton repeatedly said to the press that he didn't really care what Kiedis thought, and that he felt the two bands sounded very different (with RHCP being more funk, FNM being more rock - and after The Real Thing FNM never made an album that sounded even remotely like RHCP).

So after Kiedis completely hosed over Mr Bungle, the band did a few gigs where they did covers of RHCP songs (not even taking the piss, they were decent covers) and Kiedis got even more mad. California sold really poorly and Mr Bungle ended up disbanding. FNM did get back together for a very good new album a few years ago, though!

PS: One Hot Minute is the best RHCP album, and it's nowhere near as good as anything FNM or Mr Bungle ever put out.

Yeah I knew there was bad blood between FnM and the Chili Peppers but not the details, and it all kind of seems petty and lovely but then again; Chuck Berry refused to hire a traveling band and would hire local bands no matter how bad they were because "The're gonna know my songs". Weird Egos abound in the music business.
