There's something painfully ironic about Chinese players getting a Japanese uniform item from the early 1900s.

The items only exist on the Chinese client currently, but when they were first datamined there was backlash over them from the Korean playerbase . The backlash being that while the outfits are simply viewed as period fashion in Japan, said period was when the occupation of Korea was happening and that style of clothing was enforced upon Korean citizens as part of overwriting their culture with Japan's.

Yeah, Natsuko Ishikawa wrote... Crystal Tower, Dark Knight, Rogue and Ninja, Azim Steppe and much of the Doma questline for Stormblood, and I wanna say Binding Coil of Bahamut? Probably a bunch more I'm forgetting too, but she is absolute quality and she was responsible for the main girth of Shadowbringers. And it shows.

Managed to get through the Crystal Tower raids and Shiva the other day, and holy poo poo those were great. I'd seen the Shiva transition before and loved both themes since they came out, but experiencing it in-game is probably the best Trial transition so far. World of Darkness has some fantastic art design, too, and I love how going into Cerberus muffles the boss theme.

That said I've finally run into some dicks. I was playing on my work laptop and can't run the resolution very high, so I've had some trouble seeing where Shiva is facing. First time wasn't a problem because the tank kept her static, but my second run the tank was running all over with her in her second phase picking up the golems and piling them together all while the icicles were coming down around the arena, so I couldn't see her frontal cone coming in melee and died. Apologized in chat, got a res, went back in (and still had trouble seeing where she was facing), and the healer goes "dies standing in front of the boss, then immediately goes back to standing in front of the boss, lol".

People were REALLY pissy about wiping to Cloud of Darkness on my first run, too. I'm not even sure what happened, we took care of the adds fine but then a ton of people (myself included) suddenly died, and one of the tanks started screaming at everyone to "do mechanics, you numbskulls". Apparently there was another set of clouds that people missed? He wouldn't elaborate but we beat it the second time around and I got my Puff of Darkness, so whatever.

Now I just need to stop getting distracted by Hildibrand and Ultros and wait for the Keeper of the Lake queue.

There's a recurring mechanic of areas which at least (and preferably only) one person needs to stand in or the whole raid takes damage, commonly called towers or meteors because of their most common visuals. Cloud of Darkness is probably the place where you'll most see them missed because some will spawn in the opposite end of the boss arena.

The rings on the last boss of Syrcus Tower are another variant.

World of Darkness is easily my least favorite raid because of how many mechanics there are and how badly they're conveyed, and they still hurt even when synced. The best thing FFXIV did was settling on a design and ruleset for markers so that even new content is still possible to understand without just trial and error. It still takes a while to memorize what the different markers mean of course, but then you'll be able to instantly tell stuff like "gotta stack on up that person" or "this attack is gonna push me away, better not stand near an edge" despite never having done the fight before.

Okay, that's probably what happened then. One person was lamenting that they couldn't reach the balls even while sprinting because they were melee.

Going into the raids with almost no research but a lot of WoW raid experience is kind of chaotic but rewarding when I figure out something myself. I did not figure out that you're supposed to look away from Angra Manyu, though, that makes a lot more sense than whatever I was thinking the ground swirls meant.

also please SE can I get an Angra Manyu mount, the ahriman is a good start but I need those crazy eyes

Nah they still suck at proper marking. Take the 80 dungeons: one has small blue orbs you need to run into, the other has the same graphic for orbs to keep away from.

that's not being bad at marking, that's teaching the player by letting them see what mechanics do. neither dungeon will wipe the party if they stand on the orbs in the twinning or don't pick up the orbs in akademy, they just briefly make things harder for a while and give you a chance to get them right the next time the mechanics appear.

the duration of vulnerability up debuffs in dungeons is carefully timed so that as long as you can dodge every other mechanic, they'll wear off between stacks and allow you to win even if you miss the occasional attack.

:yeah:

in addition to this, pretty much every fight introduces its mechanics little by little. For example the first boss in Qitana Ravel will first do the wall laser, then the arm slam, then start doing both together. Throughout ARR and Heavensward I pretty much had to watch dungeon guides in order to have any idea what was going on and not just sit there going "uhhhhhh what" after each dungeon, but from Stormblood onward they've been incredibly good at making fights challenging but also possible to figure out as you're doing them.

I fucking hate puzzles.
The visual language of boss attacks in XIV is what makes the raids/trials so much less of a pain compared to what I was use to in WotLK era WoW and earlier. Standardizing the appearance of things like stack markers has made the learning process so much easier. Early WoW was kind of a mess of visual language and it made it easy to forget what boss attacks do until you wipe to it once or twice. XIV is also more rewarding to pay attention during AoE attacks compared to back in the day when there was no AoE telegraphing and there were fights that wound up being "Stand far apart 100% of the time because you will explode or spawn a hazard patch semi-randomly with little rhyme or reason".

If possible, go stare out into the abyss while standing near the edge of the arena. At least, be the farthest away from the boss, and then turn away from the boss when it goes off. The boss will have a similar look-away marker, so nobody can look at the boss, and at the same time, you have to face away from everyone so yours doesn't get them when they turn around.

Ive found standing back in corner helps because then most of the rest of the party doesnt have to stop fighting the boss.

Between E1S and E2S, both blind, there were only like three moves (all back to back in E1S) that we didn't understand almost immediately. between the game having consistent visual language and normal mode training you all the difficulty (outside of that one section) was in figuring out how to deal with the move, not figuring out what it even does. It was great.

They're also visually distinct: Twinning's orbs are larger and crackle with electricity, while Akadaemia's orbs are much smaller and have no threatening visual language. One is meant to be imposing and make you immediately think "dangerous," while the other reads as being harmless (or, at the least, benign).

Apparently the Chinese announcement of them happened May 14th, and then they were unceremoniously released on May 28th. So in top search results there's a bunch of forum/reddit/twitter posts from the first week talking about them being exclusive, and the controversy. Then there's no discussion about their worldwide release other than a lodestone post suddenly saying "here's some new mogstation things"
