whoops forgot about A Wrinkle in Time, sorry everybody. i still say Ghostbusters 2016 was a success because it made some kind of profit, small as it was, owing its Paul Feig-led woke marketing campaign. the problem is that studios want all the money, not just some of it, so Sony pulled the plug on more sequels like they planned because the profit wasn't big enough

it certainly set the standard for what we're seeing now, though

Blockade posted:

They tried that with Annihilation and nobody saw it.
they didn't try anything when it came to Annihilation, certainly not when it came to marketing. the RLM review for it raised a good point: that movie has a concept that woke critics would normally lap up (four women scientists, one of whom is a lesbian, at least two of whom are WoC, doing sci-fi things), but Paramount couldn't be bothered to promote it, so it went straight to Netflix in most of the world, got a half-assed theatrical release in the US, and was the subject of zero thinkpieces by water-carrying critics and coastal wokelibs talking about how "important" it is

turns out they only give a poo poo if they know it'll make money. who knew

Yeah, at best/worst you could say it's a really small privileged part of feminism centered around white bourgeois women who concentrate on really weird fights like the "not enough streets are named after women" gap or the "lack of women in super capitalist and well paid job category" or manspreading, aka everything vaguely feminist in the loosest possible way that isn't defending the abortion right or fighting for ERA.

and coca-cola. the Mr. Plinkett RLM video covers all of them. that's more of a Sony/Columbia Tristar thing than just a Ghostbusters 2016 thing, though. remember Jack & Jill?

It's just been called White Feminism for a while now. Using high-profile platforms to go exclusively after the softest possible targets and usually failing even at that.

Call it liberal feminism, because they think "white feminism" is just feminism but racist and they're not racist because they follow some black woman on Twitter who is paid to say "slay kween that's tea"

i prefer to call it "woke feminism" or "wokelib feminism" because there are a fair amount of WoC in media who subscribe to it as well. cough cough Roxane Gay

i'm not looking forward to post-election pop culture either. if we get four more years of Trump, it's going to be more of the same- looking for empowerment and political meaning in giant multimillion dollar Hollywood movies and church-like "comedy" series and specials. if Warren or Harris win, we're probably going to see a lot of back-patting woke feminism, most of which will be white and will make for extra cringeworthiness if Harris wins. if Bernie wins, i can see much of the industry making a shift similar to JK Rowling, although there will be some who won't go along and could very well be shunned by critics as a result

i'm not sure what the worst case scenario is, frankly

amy pascal is a big fuckup who got fired as ceo of sony pictures and yet failed up into her own production company, is super lean in and said that the pay gap at sony pictures is really about women not asking to be paid more, and clearly uses a paper thin veneer of wokeness to cover her bullshit but lets talk about twitter users instead lol

it's called "attempting to change the subject after a page-plus worth of posts on one topic" and that blog post is a good example of woke white privileged feminism that focuses on consumerism as a way to feel good about oneself. it's not egregious but it counts

market research for movie goers is increasingly showing that people aren't going to movies anymore just to go to the movies, like if they just want something to watch they're streaming something. the thing that gets people into theaters are big events, and that means remakes and sequels and this movie is so important. its really pushed out comedies, and if your drama isn't an oscar play it's not getting made.

maybe if people had money and time going to the movies just to chill would be a more possible thing? maybe these subscription things will change how movies get made? idk lol but the only movie I've seen in a theater for like a year was that apollo 11 documentary

really its just that nice TVs and streaming have made so many options available that there's no need to go to the movies unless it is, like you said, an "event" style movie like Marvel or Star Wars where the cultural zeitgeist will be all abuzz for it

There is a slow but steady trickle of at least passable westerns. I want to say the latest wave started with the remake of True Grit ten years ago but I don't actually follow westerns closely, so I might be wrong. In any case, you have your Tarantino's homages like Django Unchained and Hateful Eight, you have stuff like Bone Tomahawk with some new twist on the genre, and you even have Deadwood: The Movie. Not the worst decade for westerns, to be sure.

yeah there's a reason every big name game these days has to be a 'live service' with constant updates or DLCs or the like in order to keep the game in the news cycle for years
