Welp, is it that bad if you don't murder everyone who survives a UFO crash, or is it worth taking a bunch of fatigue injuries for the rewards & experience?

I was wondering about why you weren't rushing for the rooftop, but I guess a couple of drop-ins behind you could really ruin everyone's day.

My play here would be to ignore the scout and do the fighter instead. Sucks to lose one of the missions but you really don't have the people for all three.

I always have trouble with that mission, and then I watched an LPer do it by hiding in that room and having no trouble. It's what I did on the aborted playthrough that had horrible stuttering issues, and it went fine. So I figured this would as well.

Not so much.

I've had that mission go bad on me when I try to take the roof--too many mutons can take cover behind those big rectangular indestructable...whatever they ares. So I was suppressing them and wearing them down when a thin man dropped in behind, puked on everyone, and then I couldn't burn down incoming enemies fast enough thanks to the aim malus. Eventually I ran out of suppression ammo and suddenly mutons were grenading my cover and then one-shotting the survivors. It got bad enough that I ran the scientist out to get murdered just so the aliens would stop bringing reinforcements.

Mission's super easy if you get it early on, when all the units are sectoids and thin men. But mutons behind indestructable heavy cover are a nightmare when they've got "free thin men that drop in wherever they please, and on overwatch" support.

Anyway, speaking of horrifying missions...

For mission 58, Moida would have been flanked by that first Thin Man anyways but I believe what happened is a relatively common bug I guess no one could ever fix, either Firaxis or LW people. When someone has to step out of cover to suppress its possible they won't step back into cover if they get hit or (in the case of that mission) lose their target in some way. I think he lost sight of the Muton he was suppressing because when you removed the Muton's cover it no longer had a "step out" tile from cover and that was the tile that allowed Moida to see him.

I am glad that XCOM advanced to the point that someone survived a hit from a murder exoskeleton and kept going. I don't remember if that even made an appearance in the old LP or if there was something even worse than that.

Wooo. Unearned promotion gives me more facetime, I like this.

FairGame, when is a good time to start Improved Salvage or Alien Metallurgy? Alloys and fragments are a frequent bottleneck, and that small investment should pay off after a few missions.

SHIVs don't get fatigued either which can help with the Fatigue spiral as long as they don't get hurt

Kibayasu

I've always thought that SHIVs should be able to level up something. Like nothing as good as a soldier of course but call it "calibrating their targeting" and give them a few extra points of aim every so often.

That mission with the mechtoid was a showcase of how unfair xcom can be sometimes. You're trying to deal with a bad activation on a thing that can one-shot you, and you accidentally activate another thing that can one-shot you. I was just as prepared to see Kush Limbaugh go to be honest. It could easily have snowballed, too.

Do the alien ships (within a ship type) upgrade over time? Seems like the light scouts have been a big problem this month despite you having better technology. Could just be the luck of the draw though.

They do upgrade over time, but apparently scouts don't get anything significant, so it's probably just bad luck.

Grapplejack

It looks like that's a research ship. Hopefully it isn't a trapped UFO.

Mootiman

This one is gonna be a real slog. I remember these ships taking over an hour in the last Long War thread. At least the game saw fit to give you a few days off - I don't know how you would have managed to do this landing if those two UFOs didn't blow up.

Every 30 research (because we are doing well, you should just consider one ingame day as one research point; we aren’t letting the aliens get meaningful bonus research), alien ships get

1.) 75 more ship HP (on a scout that’s kinda meaningful, but on anything larger it doesn’t really matter.)
2.) 3% more chance to hit

At certain thresholds (270 and 540 being the most notable, so December of year 1 and September of year 2), a lot of ships get bigger upgrades: tougher guns, more guns, etc.

You can’t play Long War indefinitely, because even if you’re a tactical master and can handle the aliens on the ground, eventually the UFOs will just be too nasty to handle no matter what your tech level.

Oh wow, that poo poo was ridiculous. Good thing ITZ and CCS carried the day here, those zerkers really did you a favor by piling up inrange of Natalie.

When the behind the lines seeker pod poped up I was sure someone was going to eat poo poo, but nope HEAT rocket just told them to :fuckoff:.

But really, I'm pretty sure I'd just quit if I ran into a trapped ufo without knowing that is a thing. I'd have taken some risky move in the belief that surely there can't be more and just gotten everyone killed.

Also you keep having hilarious luck with your airgame, those laser cannons interceptors keep trolling you.

Agreed. I very much enjoy XCom but Long War just seems too rough for me. This Muton party bus is, for my tastes, not quite as cruel as the air game or the shockingly long recovery times. I know gently caress all about balancing a game, but I guess the devs were aiming for Get hosed levels of challenge and they delivered.

Also I'm very much enjoying this playthrough, Fair Game. Keep it up!

There was a lot of aliens but besides the berserkers and the big pod of seekers that came in to flank the team they tended to straggle in so by around the halfway point it was mop-up time. It's funny that after a certain point the aliens came in one by one to be shot out of cover, like they knew the trap failed and wanted to be quit of this mission.

So trap ships are a real tactic they do and not just a quick of the Long War mod? Just a ship normally left empty for abductions instead packed to the brim with bruisers in case X-Com shows up? Yikes!

Way to go funneling all those Berserkers by Natalie Corps and her close combat price, btw.
