Golden Deer seems to present the most "complete" picture of what the gently caress is going on in the background.

Yeah, Blue Lions and Black Eagles seem to be all about war war and more war, so their paths leave a lot unanswered.

Huh. It's kind of baffling then how much the Black Eagle route just isn't concerned with at all, then. No one even seems to find it within themselves to ask "what the hell is that character talking about, anyway?"

So, if I were to play some other routes, should I go Lions or Deer first, you think? I'd like some more answers.

Deer. Lions will provide you no more answers. Edelgard and Dimitri are politically motivated animals and don't have much time to ask "why".

From what I've read the "ideal" order to get as much of the story as the game gives you is Lions -> Eagles -> Deer

this is a historical criticism that readily applies to all routes. except for the charge of fascism: which is historically unintelligible. all the leaders are aristocrats. and their quasi-feudal states are all incapable of orchestrating or managing the fundamental changes to social life that all of them might rhetorically advocate. the more comprehensive analogous historical framing is that the conflict at stake, for all sides, is an ultimately delimited political conflict over the relative centralization vs decentralization, stratification vs. flattening, humanness vs. nonhumanness, of the ruling elite. until the ~1700s and ~1800s the ruling elite were society. and the common people (90% peasants) didn't even enter the picture.

If we agree all of them are incapable of enacting sweeping reform that they advocate in their lifetime, or even in the near term, then I think we can readily agree that starting a continent spanning superwar in those interests is a bad idea. Especially when the Crest system is eroding all on its own as is.

Well something has to be done about the crest system and as long as the church keeps on going there isn't any real hope for that with the same being said about those who slither in the dark.

Just got to Remire Village and the Flame Emperor shows up and asked me to join him. So naturally I said "Yes!" but because plot railroading that didn't actually happen. Then afterwards Edelgard asks me "Is that what you really want?" and I say yes again, so she says "But how can you trust someone if you don't know who they are?" as the camera zooms in on her face. Yes, miss Future Emperor, miss Crest of Flames, I really have no idea who this Flame Emperor person could be :thunk:

Crests are diluting and dying out on their own, and the worst excesses of Things Happening With Crests happened both wholly outside the Church's jurisdiction and encouragement.

It's a self solving problem, so no not really.

So the nobility will turn to Those Who Slither for aid in desperation to survive in a political landscape maintained and shaped by the church to ensure their continued dominance. By definition that is not a self solving problem.

When are the B supports for half the cast going to unlock? I'm in December already and Leonie and Bernadetta and Ferdinand and Edelgard are all stuck where I've unlocked it but it always says "it will take more time to deepen this bond." Does playing Black Eagles force me to wait til after the timeskip?

e: also, do the special classes for the house leaders and Byleth show up soon?

They would have done that with or without Crests. That's just entrenched power protecting its own interests. Crests are an excuse, but well...as we see in the real world you don't exactly need Crests to have a landed aristocracy, we're quite predisposed to intergenerational wealth transfer and hoarding all on our own.

I'm in January playing Black Eagles and I've only picked up one Dark Seal for Hubert. Cautious Googling (I've still mostly managed to avoid plot spoilers apart from route structure) seems to suggest there's no way to get another Dark Seal in Part 2 except on routes where Hubert leaves. Has anyone found anything to the contrary?

Gamerofthegame
Oct 28, 2010

Could at least flip one or two, maybe.
Every dank seal comes off the dank knight, who shows face a few times. Part one is largely the same between houses, so you can get a few as far as I know.

Also; Hubert already has natural dark magic progression, along with Lysithea and Edelgard, so it's not really all that necessary.

maybe. it sorta depends. modern state sovereignty, historically, is conventionally built upon the consolidation of political power around a single noble family -- a consolidation which then gradually becomes impersonalized. you can't have laws that apply uniformly across society, and you can't have an obedient bureaucracy to enforce these laws, without this taking place on some level. the state is otherwise little more than a patchwork of semi-autonomous nobles who are a law of their own. on the other hand: this only contributes to 'progressive' social change if the principles that inform these absolutist means are subsequently reformulated or 'seized' by the people so that the absolute sovereignty of the state becomes the absolute sovereignty of the people. what isn't clear is whether or not it is worth the blood and treasure to unite fodlan into a single state; whether or not smaller states formations would be just as appropriate; and/or whether or not it is necessary to destroy the church for further state consolidation to take place.

:toot: First playthrough completed (Black Eagle/Edelgard). Completion time: 53:35.

I have so many questions. Mainly, the game left a lot of questions unanswered. Who was Byleth's mother really? Why doesn't she have a heartbeat? What was up with the (crest stone?) thing hanging on to her heart at the end there? Speaking of mothers, who was Rhea's mother that she kept going on about? I feel like the game implies it was Sothis, but I don't see what we had to do with her being "taken away from her" or anything. Why did we have Sothis in us anyway? And what about those who slither in the dark? Do we not get to play that? Maybe that's DLC. Why did we black out for five years? Is this some timestream shenanigans? And what was the whole thing about the game implying Flayn was some kind of reincarnation or of Cethleann or something? What was the deal behind people being tortured/blood-replaced into having second crests? What was Jeralt trying to tell us before he died?

Spoiling as little as possible, and not actually answering any of the questions, do any of these questions get answers in the other routes?

(Yes, I get that it's a bit ambitious to ask questions that can only be answered by someone who has beaten several routes, but you never know...)

As a guy whose only done that route...Rhea drops some hints.

Anyway I just finished Edelgard's route and...that was a surprisingly happy ending. Married Edelgard, we wiped out the Slitherers with the help of Alois and the BESF, then we reformed the kingdom, stepped down, and lived happily ever after. I am not looking forward to church route...

Should I do Blue Lions or Golden Deer next?

Regarding Edelgard, the Blue Lions route makes it pretty clear that she's a patsy since the plans for the war were made long ago by other people and what happened in Duscur was a part of it. That combined with the worldbuilding makes me think they plan to make more Fodlan games/content in the long run.
