Then, they continued to not listen to Dan Hodges.

And it stopped there, because no one gives a drat about Dan Hodges.

I don't mean over my head like it's not meant for men. I mean over my head like I'm not academically inclined and I don't really have a great model or history of gender politics in my skull nor a great educational background to give me the the tools I'd need to acquire that. I'm very intimidated when I start to poke into something that turns out to require a lot of knowledge not to mess up, because I don't read an awful lot of books and I guess it's starting to show. Even socialism scares me because I know that it won't be long before people are pulling out names I won't even try to read.

For example I asked another thread for the most basic book they know that gives a breakdown of trans issues. I bought it and within ten pages I'm already at "this is a lot of big words for one sentence. What does this even mean?" This is a book that was described as "trans 101" and it may as well be a doctoral thesis when viewed through my eyes. I don't ask for things to be explained to me any more for two reasons. 1. It's not fair to burden the people who know this stuff or even who live this stuff with having to dumb it down for dipshits. 2. I don't feel like I have much hope of absorbing the theory of these issues anyway. It's why my approach is "what do I do?" not "what's the theory behind this?"

A good start to learning about feminism is to talk to women, or better, listen to a group of women talk without butting in with comments or jokes or whatever. A lot of stuff can be a bit academic or feel as though you're trying to pick up a story halfway through with references and assumed notions about viewers knowledge, but that's more of a niche thing rather than just considering how men and women are treat differently. A while back there was an Ask/Tell thread about being a woman I found helpful, but just talking to women and actively listening is good.

A lot of philosophy/politics books, particularly continental 20th century philosophy, can be similar in terms of expecting the audience to know a lot before having a crack. I think good entrance points, besides the communist manifesto or The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (fiction) would be maybe;

The Weird and The Eerie - Mark Fisher / more about media but a good read and makes some references to other stuff you can follow up if interested
Simulation and Simulacra - Jean Baudrillard / again, more about media, but sort of reads like a hard sci-fi book I guess
Self and Others - R.D Laing / more a psychology book, but a good introduction to brains
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert Pirsig / some allusions to philosophy, particularly at the back end, plus BIKES

All this stuff basically revolves around people, reading Kant and Hegel and so on isn't necessary towards being a good dude and you seem to be, and learning about stuff is a life-long process so no rush. Keep on keeping on.

Once upon a time I was a training counsellor. It all fell apart when I couldn't afford to complete the level 5 course that would have allowed me to practice but that's another story. Active listening in its highest degree is hard work and I definitely don't use it in the day to day. Mainly for the reason that most people aren't looking for a helping conversation when they talk. When you say "I had a crap day at work" it creeps people out if I come in with that calm Carl Rogers style "You had a crap day at work?.." and it gets creepier and creepier if I keep doing it for the sole reason that the person and I aren't in a helping relationship. They didn't want me to play therapist. Knowing half of what I once knew about how to have this kind of conversation, I feel inclined to take the role of a friend and avoid the creepo discussion. As an ordinary person it's my job to say things a counsellor would never be allowed to. "why so?" "that sucks, bro" "hey what you should do is put your worst tickets in his intray". It's not my place to be professional in ordinary discussion.

Nor is it my place to be at all involved in that kind of peer to peer experience sharing. I think I'll take the advice of being a fly on the wall rather than trying to open a creepo dialogue.

Aye, my mate said it was a bit of a slog but I found it straightforward (though memory is a funny thing) - America is maybe an easier read? I think just finding one or two ideas you're interested in and following it through is best rather than forcing yourself to read a body of work just because you were interested in what dialectics mean.

Another pal is obsessed with Deleuze and Guattari and Lacan but all that stuff is impenetrable to me and I can't see what the practical application is, but then again, whatever works for you.

Of course, being too objective or distant when talking to someone is creepy as owt. Maybe this is more a reflection on me, but sometimes when I'm talking to people I think more about what I'm going to say next rather than what the other person is saying, but truly listening to people and thinking why they're saying it is a good thing all in all.

There are a fair few splinter groups that are Extremely hosed Up, and are occasionally raided by BATF. While the modern LDS has reformed itself to some extent, this led to a fair numbers of ex-members setting up compounds in the wilderness and doubling down on the original craziness.

It's not "figure it out yourself" it's "don't blunder into the middle of a community discussion on X and demand everyone stop what they're doing to hold your hand through the basics", which is a thing that happens a lot.

Those community discussions don't exist to change anyone's mind, is the thing; it's not what they're for. So of course there's backlash when someone rocks up, asks a classic basic question, and then responds with a post like your one here when told to go look it up.

If you have done some research, read some old threads, looked up the 101 articles, then by all means ask a question! Just remember that you're never entitled to a satisfying answer, or a civil response, or any response at all, and if you can't accept that gracefully that is entirely your problem and nobody else's. Best practice: post the question, read the replies, do not respond to the replies.

I'll reiterate that all of this is in the context of posting in community discussions, not dedicated 101 or ask/tell type threads.
