Okay just bought this and I'm super overwhelmed with all these skill choices, immediately. It seems like I'm incentivized to plan out everyone from the start, but I'm looking at thirty classes or something. Are any of the default goals for black eagles egregiously dumb or sub-optimal? Why is Linhardt training reason and faith? Who should I send on group activities? I haven't played a fire emblem since the gameboy advance one, which was just a series of battles.

Why is Linhardt training reason and faith? Who should I send on group activities? The characters specialties will lead them down a strong path. Anybody with a budding talent (the stars next to a skill) can usually be used to branch them off into something else if you want. Linhardt is training Reason and Faith because he's inclined more towards magic. Reason is Offensive Magic while Faith is Healing and support. And for Group Activities just pick two people who you want to boost their support.

All magic classes can use both Reason and Faith, even if they specialize in just one, so all mage characters should train in both. Even someone like Hubert who's bad at Faith should train it because he can still toss around a heal every now and then if he has nothing better to do.

Who should I send on group activities? the defaults are honestly pretty good. just make sure you have 1-2 each: bow specialists, faith specialists (healing magic), reason specialists (killy magics). ferdinand is basically made to be a cavalier/paladin edelgard is made for AXE. i got her up to A-rank in swords and now she has a unique axe only she can use and i'm just kicking myself bernie makes a good sniper and has a hidden talent for riding, very good as either a sniper or cavalier. i'm trying to make her a Bow Knight in my game caspar was pretty underwhelming but as soon as i trained him for brawling he became a murder machine your player character should specialize in swords all the Master classes are cross-class hybrids - aim to have everyone in some sort of advanced class, but don't feel like you gotta go higher. On a first playthrough, is renown only good for upgrading the statues?

As well if someone's stats suck but you still want to use them, focus on their skills and getting them to level 20. Once they hit an advanced class they will get a huge grab bag of stats and become useful. Caspar went from trash to, no Edelgard but he can put out some pain.

oh god golden deer chapter 17 looks like it'll be a huge pain in the rear end now that i'm looking at not only enemy edelgard and dimitri with 70 attack and distant counter each, but also a ballista which can stop my mages from doing their thing, petra with 78 avoid and enough AS to double my entire roster, and of course demonic beasts to hinder my advance. i guess it's fitting with the plot that there's only like, 10 faerghus enemies including dimitri, dedue and mercedes, but i'm in for reinforcement hell from the empire, aren't i

No it's normal and class mastery doesn't mean much for 90% of the classes. The only ones worth sticking around for in the 2nd tier are Brigand (deathblow) and mage (Fiendish blow).

Upgrading all the statues to get all the Class Exp +1 perks is about the only thing. But many of the classes don't have masteries worth getting anyway, with a few notable exceptions like Fiendish Blow from Mage, maybe the speed one from Pegasus Knight.

alright cool, thank you. also do npc units forever-die in Classic if they die? i just had the old knight guy die on the mission where enemies attack from the rear while you're storming a tower because he missed Over 9000 70% attacks and took a billion chip damage and i'd rather not restart if that wont impact things but i will if necessary

I bet loads of people have lost it that way because speaking to your characters during explore isn't really that important, bet loads of people just stopped doing it.

Deer route really hammers home that Edelgard and Dimitri basically can't function without Byleth to drag them from the event horizon. Edelgard in particular, gently caress you lady just because Claude's an outsider doesn't mean he can't help you.

It's hide and seek, basically. The other character is hanging out somewhere in the monastery, and you need to find and talk to them. There's some "You sense a presence" or "Getting close!" text on the left when you get near. After a little while hints show up on the minimap, which are big yellow circles showing the rough area an NPC is in, to help narrow down the search. You can't zoom out, though, so you still need to run close enough to even see the circle on the minimap. As an aside, does anyone know if there's any benefit to being hard to find? I ended up placing my guy right near the start to make it easier for other players who just want the rewards, but I don't know if I'm missing out by not putting them in a random dorm room or something.
